The coronavirus brought much of the world to a standstill, dropping carbon emissions by five percent. Al Gore says keeping those rates down is now up to us. In this illuminating interview, he discusses how the steadily declining cost of wind and solar energy will transform manufacturing, transportation and agriculture, offer a cheaper alternative to fossil fuels and nuclear energy and create millions of new jobs. Stay tuned for a lively debate about geoengineering and hear Gore’s thoughts about how humanity can create a clean, prosperous future through a focused global effort and a generation of young people committed to change. (This virtual conversation, hosted by head of TED Chris Anderson, was recorded June 23, 2020.)

The Earth is warming and we have to do something about it.

@Songbird645 I was more so making the joke that al gore called it global warming in the beginning and now everyone is calling it “climate change” because we get brutal (not warm) cold weather in the winter. The earth is a living body just like us and guess what? Our bodies go through “changes” as we age. How else would you explain the great ice age?? Maybe the world needs to rid of humans all together instead of thinking we have the answer to everything.

@Guillermo King You mean the joke that conservatives forget who insisted on calling it Climate Change and scrubbed all official documents of the term Global Warming?

It’s no joke, and unfortunately conservatives have no clue who did it. Worse, they blame others. Amazing.

So , you want the government to pay for everything and at the same time you believe that theres a climate crisis?????This whole climate agenda plan is a really messed up trap , you need to question what the underlined agenda is before assuming the best because everything we’re doing today will have major consequences for the generations to come

    • Stanley Goddard

      July 8, 2020 at 10:37 pm

@Lexi Rae So, you want to increase warming AND pay the oil companies for the privilege of doing so??????? This whole science DENIAL is really a bunch of whiny uneducated Fox viewers, and you need to question those non-scientist you trust so much.

If we could get the crying conservatives to stop crying, and maybe a few more politicians off the energy company’s teats, just maybe we could get started on rational plans for mitigation.

Mankind will soon cease polluting planet Earth.
The discovery of oil peaked in 1964. Since then the amount of oil found each year has declined each decade. In 2019 Rystad Energy reported that the global discovery of oil had declined to 9 billion barrels PA. That’s sufficient to run the world for 3 months.
    Mankind consumes 100 million barrels a day = 3 billion a month = 36 billion PA.
9 billion barrels is 27 billion barrels short of what is required.
Mankind cannot pump undiscovered oil. We can only pump oil from oil fields that have been found.
Soon demand will exceed supply. Eventually oil will become ESSENTIAL SERVICES ONLY.
    Please Google
    Green revolution.
When I was born in 1948 there were 2 billion people. Now there are 7 billion. This 3 fold growth was made possible by the Green revolution.
The Green revolution improved farm productivity 3 fold.
These farm chemicals are made from oil and gas. A shortage of oil and gas will impact the production these essential farm chemicals.
A reversal of the Green revolution will result in Global Famine.
It will also put an end to Global Warming.

Climate change is a religion not science. We need more CO2 not less. Scientist consensus is fake news. In the 1970s there was and ice age scare. In the 19990s they said we would all be under water now. Check the facts. Don’t belive the fake news

    • Stanley Goddard

      July 9, 2020 at 1:29 pm

Science denial is absurd. We have more atmospheric CO2 now than in the past 3,000,000 years (not a typo.)

Those who think consensus is not important in science have no idea what they are talking about. The consensus that atoms exist is pretty high, but few deniers will state that since there is a consensus, atoms must not exist. But they do that with climate science all the time. Why is that?

“In the 1970s there was and ice age scare.” No, in the 70s the consensus was that CO2 was taking over as the largest forcing, Oh boy, there’s that word again to confuse you, so let’s use “majority” instead. In the 80s there was a super-majority of scientists who knew CO2 was taking over. 90s, more of a majority. 00s, more. 10s, more. Deniers: “Gee, my gut tells me…”

“In the 19990s they said we would all be under water now.” “They said. Gotta love the working of the science aliterates.

Check the science facts. Don’t believe the organizations that told you “smoking is OK for you health” because they are now telling you that CO2 is not a problem, and that earth is not warming, and earth will cool soon… but smoking is good for you!!!

    • payz hayz

      July 9, 2020 at 2:14 pm

      >We need more CO2 not less
But we got more CO2, for the past 800,000 years in the atmosphere it was at 180-280, now it’s past 400 and the last 7 years were the hottest recorded in human history.
      >Scientist consensus is fake news
Based on what? Every politician who denies climate change receives large amounts of money from fossil fuel companies, if the scientists could be bought why don’t they buy the scientists? Why should we just climate denial funded by sources that have financial incentive for the public to deny it, rather than scientists who aren’t particularly rich.
      >In the 1970s there was and ice age scare
In the 1970’s some papers were published predicting global cooling, but six times as many papers at the same time were published predicting global warming, and our science has improved so consensus is it is heating now.

The whole world is already going bankrupt because of Corona, so of course there must be trillions of loose Dollars everywhere to finance Gore’s hare brained weather manipulation scheme, which by the way looks a lot like a pyramid scam. Who exactly is going to pay for everything? Oh, the taxpayers? The same taxpayers who’ve lost their jobs in the lockdown? The same taxpayers who can’t go to work because the roads are blocked by Antifas and BLM, who actually shoot people for driving an offensively white car? The same taxpayers who are being evicted because they can’t pay rent anymore? Oh, those taxpayers! Good luck with that, Al.

The ‘Science’ behind AGW is at best categorical. If any (and all) graphs they show you do not span 100s of years if not 1,000s then you can suspect you are being conned. The weird thing about this whole concept is the capacity and appetite for dishonesty seems to be absolute. Almost the entire human race wants to be led by the nose? Maybe that’s instructive. We can only hope not. We seem to have been overrun by Narcissists. Anyway the universe couldn’t care less about our self-induced problems with truth and information. We were assembled by blind, deaf and dumb Ma Nature and polished those mutations with drug-induced (hormones and neurotransmitters) natural selection. We never really had a chance.

Countdown & Club of Rome linear Malthusian projections don’t account for exponential Sustainable innovation. By the way I suggest you find an expert on Esther Bosenrop to interview and expose the NeoMalthusians why their 3 disaster creed is incomplete

REMEMBER that Malthus was updated by Boserup during 1900 in relation to how innovation overcomes war, hunger and plague through an exponential efficiency in the use of resources:

The green revolution that allows us to feed more than 10 billion people (although our use generates 30% waste, +1 billion obese and +800 million malnourished)

So ignorance and violence, and lack of innovation, and not lack of resources OR SUPERPOPULATION, that cause death by war, pestilence and famine, and let me CHANGE this in 2020, right? #2020INNOVATION

industry and population are contributing factors to it but it’s also the wasteful use of the energy. there are a lot of different ways we can integrate all the different energy sources together. and just by being more efficient with the way that we use energy in the way that we burn the fossil fuels that we have and by keeping the oceans and forests safe we can get this thing under control

We reached the 10 year time limit Gore said was real in his Inconvenient Truth in 2006. We are already 4 years beyond it, so I guess there’s no need to even try. And of course the US did a better job related to CO2 emissions than Europe, and we’re not in the Paris Climate Accord nor did we implement special carbon taxes or the like. Good old capitalism reduced our CO2 emissions just because of free market “greedy” people who continue to produce more energy at lower costs because competition does this without left/right authoritarianism.

Nuclear is the greenest tech. It emits no pollution, needs the least amount of land and natural resources, and works 24×7 reliably. Even the waste issue would be resolved if we just stopped banning nuclear technology. When you have a great new science and then reject studying it and making it better, we hold humanity back. Most green tech requires huge amounts of old fashioned power to extract materials, manufacture and replace fairly regularly. Nuclear means unlimited agriculture, unlimited fresh water, unlimited manufacturing of hydrogen, driving systems that extract carbon from the air, etc.
The market isn’t against nuclear…it’s fear of wokesters and environmentalists who demonized it, created fear that it would destroy life, etc.

Where’s the Google WARNING link to wikipedia about climate change? I guess some opinions are Google’s own preference, so they pretend hysteria is real, and the natural improvement of capitalism’s competition to reduce costs and make people richer and more able to live well.

I thought that by 2020 the world was going to end and Miami would be gone and all this? I guess the only thing that Al Gore was right about was that environmentalists will swallow any lie.

My great hope for the climate change catastrophe is that it wipes us out soon enough for the planet to recover once we’re gone. Earth is an amazing and probably unique phenomenon in the universe. But the evolution of humanity has proven to be a terrible and tragic disaster. The only thing the human animal is great at is destructive self-importance. It’s time to put it to an end for the sake of better species. We deserve what we’ve created for ourselves but none of our fellow victims do.

It’s odd to see the bots coming out with the same Al Gore snark they had 15 years ago. Meanwhile, Al has a message of hope that resonates with young folks, and vindication of what he has been saying all along. Well played, Mr. Gore.
