Conceptual artist Tavares Strachan creates the kinds of projects that make you stop in your tracks, like a 4.5-ton block of Arctic ice he brought back to his birthplace in the Bahamas or a gold, Egyptian-inspired sculpture he launched into orbit around the Earth.

This is fantastic, obviously. I hope many people are inspired by this fine artist and human being. And I know it’s TED, so there’s going to be an element of the, um, formal, but this audience absolutely missed the boat on a few points that should have drawn whoops, cheers and a standing ovation. That audience shot tiwards the end was grim.

I know so many stories that get erased by our current Western civilization as not appropriate according to the standards of our times. Sometimes it’s so painful to think about it that I wish I would just disappear too…

The only people with any voice or visibility are the rich. Nobody who actually matters ever gets recorded or remembered. This is one of the problems of our modern age that we have to fix, so please don’t disappear, stand up taller and shout for it.

That’s not right at all. Everyone should get a chance to be heard and seen. This too shall pass.

@Tim Truett You misunderstand the issue. Stories are told and written, and people who find them show interest in them, but then the authors and “publishers” get harrassed and their writing, audio or video get destroyed, so that their stories soon fall into oblivion. It’s never been easier than in the digital age I’m afraid. Modern autodafés don’t make any smoke. Some whole subcultures are erased this way, and nobody cares.

@Tim Truett Franklin had no concept of what it means to be poor. He was born privileged and had tremendous opportunities handed to him through his entire life. Like all his kind, he had no understanding of why more people don’t do more worth-while things. It’s not so easy to write or do something writing-worthy without things like housing, schooling, etc. If everyone could be as privileged as him, we would live in a world of remembered heroes instead of anonymous slaves.

How inconsiderate is that?
Quite pathetic.

How much real knowledge is lost due to the narrow mindedness of the researcher and the storyteller.
For example, in the Southwest, there has been a great mystery about the pueblo people and the Anasazi. But nobody bothered to ask the Navajo (Denali).

i have the ashes of a old m8 in my garden he has had legendary adventures since he died and bits of his ashes are spread all around the world. he loved motorbikes so i get my mates to take a tube of his ashes when they on a run. but his resting place is in the center of my shooting range so he also gets shot at every day.

I don’t know what the speaker means when he talks about Matthew Henson’s story being lost to history. I read about Matthew Henson in school when was 12 years old in 1972 in Virginia. What the speaker interprets as being lost to history, I interpret as his own ignorance.
