Side note: I actually thought a 4 dB increase was a doubling, but here are the general rules used in audio:
- Sound Energy (Physics): Every 3 dB increase doubles the actual sound power.
– Perceived Loudness (What we hear): It takes a ~10 dB increase for the human ear to perceive the sound as being twice as loud.
