Cristiano did not answer a single question

    • @Ryannnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

      September 6, 2025 at 9:45 pm

He answered pretty much all of them. His answer to the first question was low power consumption. Some of his answers included information that wasn’t relevant to the question. His answer to the second question was that it can be used both for vision-only systems and for multi-sensor systems. That is what Christiano means by “scalable,” which is perhaps a little non-standard, semantically. He really means versatile when he says scalable. He then says something about it being certified in many countries, which I suppose is another kind of “scalable.” You can tell by his answers that he doesn’t endorse the viewpoint embedded in the question… the interviewer’s notion that a vision-only approach is more scalable.

    No lidar?

    • @Ryannnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

      September 6, 2025 at 9:32 pm

He said it is compatible with a multi-sensor approach. He seemed to be referring to the vision-only approach as merely an ADAS, but I think he left that intentionally unclear.

    • @Alqptuzmw

      September 7, 2025 at 12:55 am

Lidars have been frying people’s cameras. Maybe that is why? Xpeng also dropped it, I heard many other Chinese manufacturers are dropping it too. They seem to be very error prone.

    • @Ryannnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

      September 7, 2025 at 1:40 am

@Alqptuzmw LIDAR used for automotive purposes is engineered so it does not damage eyes or cameras. Waymo’s vehicles have operated for 100 million miles without causing damage. A number of other (aspiring) autonomy solutions use LIDAR, such as Mobileye and Nuro. Xpeng aspires to achieve vehicle autonomy but has not done so yet.

    • @Ryannnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Why do you think Tesla is ahead? In what aspect of vehicle autonomy? Ahead of Qualcom?

    • @heydudewhatsup

      September 7, 2025 at 3:40 am

@@Ryannnnnnnnnnnnnnnntesla is ahead because they have been working on it for longer than any other oem. There are tons of videos online of the self driving tech tesla offers and it is clear they far ahead other manufacturers. There are some really good highway only (premapped) systems offered by Mercedes, GM, etc but again they are only for highway driving and cannot be used on city streets like tesla fsd. Waymo is also very good but it is not a car the avg person can purchase and use. Tesla is the only manufacturer in america that offers a system like this that can drive you from door to door through complex city traffic scenarios, highways, parking lots, etc. Its def not perfect but it has massively improved over the last few years as demonstrated in all of the videos posted by people on youtube. There are a ton of tesla fan boys that only show the good parts of fsd but there are also fair youtubers that show all aspects such as DirtyTesla or Out of Spec Reviews. You should check out some of their vids if you’d like to learn why it is currently the best system offered by an oem

      How about Waymo

    • @Ryannnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

      September 6, 2025 at 9:31 pm

Tesla doesn’t have any autonomous taxis in service as of yet. I suppose there’s always the chance they will get there in the future, but so far the rate of safety-critical interventions in Austin has been quite high. Waymo’s solution is fully validated and was 8-10x safer than a human a year ago.
