The biggest danger with mortars is people getting body parts over the muzzle. Having a mortar shell impact your noggin is a very good way to learn how to push daisies upwards. It happens pretty much every year, sadly. As you might guess, alcohol is usually involved.

I’ve seen private estimates rate about $1000 per minute. Obviously this can scale to be much more expensive, if the client desires a more grandiose show.

When I lived on the island of Okinawa as a kid we had easy access to buy fireworks at the local shops. One popular firecracker was named ‘ 2B Bomb’
It was a longish cylinder and instead of a fuse you had to light it had kind of a matchhead, and you could just rub the head on a rough surface and it would aizzle then start smoking as the internal fuse caught and after a few seconds it would explode. Not very powerful, but very convenient for kids without matches.
Of course one of our gang stuck a couple in his pocket and while running around playy the heads of two 2B Bombs must have ignited each other because smoke started coming out of his pockets and he frantically tried to dig them all out before they went off😅

I wouldn’t describe the smell of sulfur dioxide as akin to “rotten eggs.” That is far more typical of hydrogen sulfide gas. Sulfur dioxide smells sharp and acrid – it burns your nose, and you can taste/feel it at the back of your throat (as it dissolves in your mucous membranes and creates sulfurous acid, not to be confused with sulfurIC acid which is ~5X stronger*). I have spent a good deal of my life working on, and exploring volcanic environments, and sulfur dioxide is frequently present in those places, especially the ones where magma is either erupting or close to the surface. And it is the same sort of thing that you experience downwind of a long fireworks show. Or, for that matter, when you strike a match.
*However, sulfur dioxide, both as a gas and dissolved in water as sulfurous acid, is an atmospheric precursors to sulfur trioxide and sulfuric acid – it’s not as stable a molecule, and tends to be oxidized to the much stronger acid.

I mean, it’s not weird many people don’t like the smell of fireworks. It doesn’t just emit carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide, but also toxic metals into the air, which are shown to damage cells and lung tissue. So I think its a pretty natureal reaction for a lot of people, it’s not healthy to breath in.

Great professional presentation!!! One very small correction: NOTAM used to be an acronym for NOtices to AirMen. The FAA recently changed it to NOtices to Air Missions. KInda silly, but I guess the FAA gets paid by changing regulations – not by leaving things alone!

The FARs were originally written in the late 70s, when there were not many women pilots.
Point of fact, the FARs still list a telegram as an acceptable form of communication of notifying the FAA of a change of address.

You don’t need to notify the FAA unless you are within the range of the airport or base… If you’re more than 5 miles away the planes have gained enough altitude to be far above any fireworks and you aren’t in ATC airspace…

A friend of mine works for CPSC and the reports he gets after July 4th of hands blown off, people burned and maimed and even killed by fireworks is amazing. A dude in VA Beach blew his head off in 2013 just Google that info and you can read articles about it.

I remember being a kid and visiting my uncle and grandma in nevada. We went to a fireworks stand and got m60s. My dumbass was lighting them in my hand and waiting then tossing them into the air so they would explode mid air. Now I realize I could have lost fingers or my hand if it had a bad fuse. Got lucky and had some fun.

I used to throw mortar shells without the tube as a kid. Yesterday I went to do it for the first time since I was a kid and it exploded in my hand. I’m ok aside for some burns but I am SOOO lucky I wasn’t holding it tightly. Don’t play with explosives guys

I have to completely disagree about the consumer VS pro Pyro. It’s all very clever marketing, there is no difference in those larger 3″, 4″, 5″ canister shells, the powder weight is the same. The pros measure shells by diameter, consumer measures vertically, they’re all essentially the same diameter. The girl who made the comment is clearly low information, and based of feeling rather than fact.

I was watching Kendrick Lamar Pop Out concert and they actually talk about the pyro on stage live because one of the artists is blind. And then i started paying attention to the floor and you can see it change, like the panels with the fireworks get pulled down and replaced with “safe to step on” spots when they aren’t using pyrotechnics. This stuff is very much a choreography

Anyone in portland oregon that wants to buy fireworks goes across the river to Washington and buys real fireworks. Anything sold at a “tent” in Oregon is a joke. Snakes, sparklers, ground blooms etc.. And there is no law enforcement on the subject. I mean if they *can* charge you with illegal fireworks they will but they aren’t trying to enforce it. The police aircraft were out on July 3rd, not july 4th.

SC has the least strict laws. Living here in NC, EVERYBODY and their mothers can drive like an hour or two and grab all the best fireworks and bring them back for 4th of July and other holidays. There are ppl who literally save all year for it. They drive right down to SC and spend like 5-10 grand for the 4th/new years eve

My son was 4 when we handed him a sparkler. He was awed, and held it at arm’s length. Then a bug flew into his eye, and he involuntarily went to scratch his eye… with the hand with the sparkler.
His eyelid was immediately burned, fortunately no damage to his eye, but it took some time to get any sort of idea as to what happened. We had to eventually hold him down to determine if his eye had either been hit by a spark or he poked his eye.
Fortunately it was only the eyelid, and we had doused him with cold water.
TIP for parents: hold young kids’ hands containing the sparkler and make nice patterns with them.

The San Diego malfunction was caused by a design flaw in the electronic firing setup where the computer that was commanded to test and check all the shells for electrical continuity at once sent the full firing voltage to the e-matches instead of a lower voltage that’s normally used for continuity checks that won’t sent them off, just be enough to see a complete circuit. With the full voltage, when the computer tested all the shells at once, it fired all the shells at once. I’m an LA based pyro tech, and this was the story I ended up hearing through the grapevine.

So far the best nashiki shell I’ve found consumer wise is the raccoon brand one, we had them this last fourth and they were the hit of the night, BIG willows that just hung, people were able to take great pics cause the hang time, it was a rainy day so I wasn’t worried about launching them
