There is a better answer for why gorillas are ripped, and it’s that they lack the levels of myostatin that humans do. Myostatin tells muscles to stop growing. Gorillas have less, so their muscles are bigger.

On another note is so maddening that people kill gorillas to use their hands as ashtrays. WTF

  59. @Nylak-Otter

    May 9, 2024 at 9:16 am

I’m an animal behaviorist, but there is a massive black hole where my knowledge of primates should be, primarily because apes just kind of unsettle me on an uncanny valley level. I don’t get along well with humans either, to be honest.

But with their teeth-showing, I assumed it was similar to dogs, and apparently I guessed right. In canids, they flash their teeth for aggression displays as well as an exaggerated show of submission. Some individuals have a characteristic submissive “smile” where they will often curl their upper lip back when being appeasing, which many folks misinterpret as a show of aggression despite the rest of their body language oozing submission (both fearful or playful/engaging).

  63. @BelgorathTheSorcerer

    May 9, 2024 at 10:36 am

Orangutans are the best. Bonobos and Gorillas are pretty great too. Chimps and humans are kind of terrible though.

I’ve always wondered how Bonobos can boink so much. Do they not have a refractory period? Are they actually reaching climax every time they go at it? Even when I had non-stop randy teenager mojo, going more than a couple times in a day wasn’t fun. It just hurt. Bonobos are giving the Energizer Bunny a run for his money though.

  75. @iamdanielmonroe

    May 9, 2024 at 9:04 pm

Her point at 4:00 was actually more significant than many realize. Yes, Bonobos are typically more docile and kind-natured but the fact that Koba was so ruthless and psychopathic is a testament to how badly he was treated being tested and experimented on by humans. I don’t think this was an error on the film’s part but more of subtle character development and backstory.

  85. @Thunder_Dome45

    May 10, 2024 at 12:27 pm

I saw a primate type of animal at a zoo once. He kept walking to one side of his cell and then crossing back 1/2 way across, and he would flip over on one shoulder and roll over. Boredom I guess. He just kept repeating that over and over. I got video, but who knows where it’s at. It was the Oklahoma City zoo.

  89. @My-Tubes..O_o

    May 10, 2024 at 3:03 pm

Did you know humans are as closely related to Bonobos as Chimps? I’m just going to quote the primatologist Franz Duval here and say there has never been one documented instance of a Bonobo killing another. Oh wait and a second thing, after a Male dominator has died in a collective of chimps its been observed the feemales try to make sure the tribe doses not get another.

“Fossey was reported to have captured and held Rwandans she suspected of poaching. She allegedly beat a poacher’s testicles with stinging nettles.”

I also heard she took a local child and wouldnt give him back until poachers traded the animals they’d hunted for him? So while Diane Fossey did good things for the animals, she also did some very controversial things for the people who actually live there. Two things can be true.

When referring to Gorilla aggression and saying Chimps are “a little bit of a different story” This is just straight up dishonest, chimps are highly aggressive and violent and have murdered hundreds of people. They kill and eat rival chimps and even their own troop over disputes. The rip peoples faces, fingers and, genitals off and eat babies. That is a VASTLY different story. I know you love apes but trying to romanticize them is wrong.

She may be a Primatologist, but their is one thing, here, that she is wrong about.

When talking about the gorilla’s saggital crest she says that the immense jaw strength is “not for chewing, they are vegitarians”. She says they are for fighting. That’s incorrect. Gorilla’s rarely fight that seriously. But something they spend all day, every day, doing, is tearing apart tough, fibrous, plant matter with their teeth. They even show footage of a gorilla tearing a very tough,bamboo-like,chute with its teeth. Suggesting that they don’t need strong Jaws because they are vegetarians is ridiculous. They may bite when fighting, sometimes. It’s pretty rare that that happens, though. They have a saggital crest for the same reason that Pandas do. And its due to their similar diets.

    May 16, 2024 at 3:01 am

I just happened to watch a Dutch television show about a zoo in which the orangutans did the funniest stuff!
The caretakers put new bedding on the floor after cleaning the place. The orangutans came back in and thought: “wtf is this, they messed with our stuff!” And then proceeded to neatly fill back up the empty bags that were left for them to use as toys with the fresh bedding…
