Thank you! That’s what I was thinking. Apple does sometimes put clues into their invites (Spring Loaded the colors represented the iMac colors) but not everything is an Easter egg — vloggers freaked out when the first WWDC21 images all had Memoji’s wearing glasses assuming it was AR Glasses, but it was just to show the reflection of the computer screen….), and OMG, there’s a computer… meaning there will be new computers! Ha ha!

I want iPad pro to have all the pro apps so desperately. I mean full Photoshop with support for actions and all the plugins and filters. Also final cut pro would be nice. Non touch screen Macs feel somehow so old fashioned even if I have an iMac

    • Sacto1654

I think with 16 to 32 GPU cores and 32 to 64 GB of RAM, these new MacBook Pros are powerful enough to even run AAA games at high resolution and high frame rates. Sure, it may be a *VERY* niche application, but it will be quite a showcase for the power of the M1X. As such, don’t be surprised if Apple brings out someone from the likes of EA Sports or Blizzard to show off this capability.

In 2012 I bought an Apple TV for $100 and it had everything it needed to work right out of the box. Almost 10years later I bought the new Apple 4K TV 64gb for $200. It had no HDMI cable, a remote that doesn’t use batteries and will probably needed to be wholly replaced for $70 in 2 or 3 years when the internal battery can’t be recharged, and when I finally got it connected could not load all 300+ titles in my que on Netflix the way the previous device could. THIS is what Apple has become – luxury price tags for economy class experiences.

How is graphical performance on the macbooks M1. How does it compare to the old style of having a separate GPU

    • Dominic Stocker

      May 31, 2021 at 6:49 pm

I think that it is around the performance of the Intel XE graphics or an NVIDIA 1050 (don’t quote me on that, thought). But this is a thing that you can look up yourself too 🙂

Should a student into coding and analytics go for the 2020 m1 macbook air or wait for the new MacBooks?? Planning to buy one this fall

    • Matthew Garber

      May 31, 2021 at 12:51 am

It’s not critical that you wait. It’s likely that your courses would benefit from the extra performance course if you take computationally heavy classes such as data visualization, 3D rendering, machine learning or game dev courses. But the vast majority of your classes an old intel core i5 is more than enough (i3 may be lacking). I would definitely get either a mac or if you really want windows consider dual booting with Linux, having a UNIX terminal is key. Also remember every year apple has a student discount over the summer. Lastly if your interested in mobile app development and want to run xcode or android studio you will probably want to wait. Current M1 with 8gb of ram can handle the workload but I have noticed overall performance is not better then an i7 with double the ram. It’s seriously impressive it has similar performance to a computer with double the ram. But it still struggles on intense projects which will hopefully get a major boost with the next MBP’s

Nobody uses the SD cards on their laptops except for selected few population of video editors who need a sd card readers. I don’t see a point of adding back the sd card reader as it will only take up internal space and major chunk of people who buy macbook pro never use it. All youtubers create a fuss about anything they don’t like and majority repeat the same review by some good reviewers.

I have the M1 Pro. It’s amazing. I was able to format a media drive and then I transferred data to the new drive as well as to Dropbox and iCloud. The data went in 30-50gig chunks and the M1 chugged right through. No hangs.

Currently using a MacBook Pro from 2015 with 16GB of RAM, 1 TB SSD and am just fine – I’ll not buy a new machine until this one has no macOS support anymore or becomes unusable. My personal motivation is to use stuff as long as possible and, if possible, to have it repaired, because of humanitarian and environmental reasons.

HDMI is pointless on any MacBook. I doubt most MacBook users have theirs connected to an external monitor, and if they really need to, they make USB-C to HDMI cables, and they’re cheap too.
MagSafe is cool I guess, but M1 efficiency/battery life has negated the need to be constantly be plugged in to power. Long gone are the days that you needed to plugged in at your local Starbucks or library and having to worry about people tripping on your cord.

SD card reader is a welcome addition though. Personally, I don’t use it on my current MBP. I’m a photographer and I use my M1 iPad Pro to import, edit, and sync my RAWs to Adobe Cloud with Lightroom. Adobe won’t let you import AND sync full RAWs if you use Lightroom Classic on your desktop. You have to use Lightroom CC but no one wants to use that, it’s so limited compared to Lightroom Classic.
