November 10, 2020 at 11:52 pm
@Felipe Cañavera The number of cores, built in RAM to the SOC, it’s a huge backward step. They are just too low end and yet they have not discounted the price for using their own silicon. Apple are double dipping.
Jack Shen
November 11, 2020 at 1:20 am
@Nothing ToSee Using their own chips doesn’t mean they have to lower their prices. Increasing battery life by a huge margin while increasing performance, yet people still complain about “core numbers”

@Nothing ToSee and I’m not a computer expert, but doesn’t built in memory mean better performance?

I honestly don’t know if I should be upset that I bought a MacBook Air before they announced they were doing this at WWDC? Because it is like on the one hand, I am kind up upset that there is now a Mac where I can download content from my streaming services off line, which is the reason I bought the new iPad Air (which I am in love with because it is kind of a good middle ground between Mac and an Apple Silicon Mac). However, there is a part of me that is kind of okay with the fact that I bought a MacBook when I did for 2 reasons: First reason is that it allows the bugs to be worked out during the 2 year transition period. Another reason is that it may allow me to get an Apple Silicon MacBook once the new redesign period occurs. I don’t know how to feel. What do you think?
Troy Walt
November 10, 2020 at 11:28 pm
Yeah its probably a good thing to wait for at least 2nd gen of arm chips in mac
Ari Pauls
November 10, 2020 at 11:32 pm
@Troy Walt that’s what I thought. But sadly, there is that voice inside of me saying that if my 12 inch MacBook with the first generation butterfly keyboard did not break, then I could get it. But, then again, at least I might be able to get one during the redesign period!

the difference between the air and the pro is the fan, so they will be able to boost the power of the cpu and also you got a bigger battery
Tariq Lacy
November 10, 2020 at 11:37 pm
Your might want to go deeper and check their respective spec sheets. 400 nits vs 500 nits of screen brightness, the Pro’s touch strip, and the 3-point studio-quality microphones are important to note, and then of course the 7-core vs 8-core GPU for each base model Air and Pro device. That Pro fan is surely only going to kick on in order to prevent throttling, and we’re all seeming to forget that the Pro’s speakers sound better (pretty sure that’s accurate!). Lmk if I’m sizing these up wrong.

November 10, 2020 at 11:37 pm
They also disable a gpu core in the air. Look at their website and they say 7 instead of 8. I believe you can get 8 for an upcharge
Anton David
November 11, 2020 at 12:37 am
@Tariq Lacy Also the wattage is surely different for example de air might draw 5-7W where as the Pro with the bigger battery and the thermal headroom might draw 10-15W even though they use the same chip
Tariq Lacy
November 11, 2020 at 12:45 am
@Anton David Yes exactly! I assume that this also means we will not experiencing throttling as often.

Because they are basically equivalent to two NVMe PCIe SSDs in Raid in terms of their throughout. And they are miniaturized LP components. OFC they cost extra, miniaturization and efficiency cost money.

There is a big difference between Air and Pro. MB Air starts with $999 but has 7 core GPU if you upgrade to 8 core GPU it’s $1250 close to base model MB Pro. So basically what Apple trying to distinguish between the Air and Pro is the one extra core of GPU, Touch Bar and off course a fan. Now the funny part is if you upgrade the Air with the same 8 core GPU that MB Pro has then Air will not need the fan so why the pro will need the fan. Same thing for the Mac mini. Apple is kind of massed up with the lineup. So I hope it will take 1 more year for them to clean it up. Until then it is not wise to buy M1 chipset Macs.

Such a shame Apple is not reviving the 12” MacBook. Surely with the M1 it would perform much better, with that truly portable form factor.

This isn’t your typical DDR4 memory (which is $50 already for the higher clocked ram sticks), this is ultra-fast “unified memory” which is faster, miniaturized, and newer, so yes, it’s $200. To be fair it is pretty worth the extra tech IMO

Is it true that the ram is part of the SOC? So first gen M1 chip max ram is 16gb only. And is it true that the Mac Mini with M1 chip does not support e-gpu?
Thanh Tran
November 11, 2020 at 8:19 am
Possibly. It does have Thunderbolt but egpu is more of an intel only thing
Pete Eddy
November 11, 2020 at 8:28 am
Ram is integrated. Currently 16GB max. But these are the entry level Macs.
There is a rumored 8big/4little chip that should be very good. And I would expect a more powerful CPU to support dimms.
eGPUs are just another Thunder bolt/USB 4 device. If your hardware implements those protocols it’s just a matter of writing drivers. So there no technical reason not to support eGPUs. The bios on the GPU situation is probably no different than putting a PC video card in a Mac Pro, you won’t get a boot screen but once your in the OS the OS drivers will handle everything else.
Thanh Tran
November 11, 2020 at 9:04 am
@Pete Eddy apple wants to keep all the profit in house. So probably won’t have external memory. To double up memory for Mac Pro, I think they will double up on the chips instead.

Exactly – I don’t get the whiny and persistent webcam complaints. Why do you want people to see your every blemish and imperfection in HD?? Also saves on bandwidth for virtual meetings. The only reason to improve this is to get FaceID working on Macs. I suspect we get a FaceID capable module on the 14” and 16” redesigns as wellas for the iMac.

What kind of nonsense is Apple selling us? The mini is the best in its class, compared to what? Base model 8 gb ram 256 gb ssd, $699, unupgradable later.
ASRock deskmini 300+ ryzen 5 3400g, 32 gb ram, 1tb ssd roughly $550-650 depending on what you pick and price fluctuations.
So for less money better system more memory, more storage and I’d say better graphics and cpu but we still don’t have any comparison values just it’s better than the 2018 lower end i3 so entertain me how would the mini outperform this cheaper system?

You said now, the air has no fan, I wasn’t aware it ever had one.
And the difference between the air and pro will be the pro’s fan and how it will dissipate heat to keep high speed processing where the air will slow

Paul Harrison
November 12, 2020 at 8:56 pm
The most telling statement in the apple keynote was that the M1 offers 3 times the graphics performance of any existing integrated graphics. In other words if I upgrade my current i3 based laptop with Intel system graphics that can barely run Skyrim legendary edition at low settings to an M1 then I would still only be able to run Skyrim Special Edition at medium level graphics settings. When you look at the few frames of game play in the keynote it is clear that the M1 could not run Skyrim Second Edition at highest settings. There is of course no chance the the M1 could ever run cyberpunk 2077. There is also no chance that in a crowded market that either Bethesda or CD Project Red would port their games to the M1.
I have an iPhone and have 185 Gb of old video podcasts in the iTunes library in my PC. This means that none of even the the fully upgraded Macs in the keynote would have the 2Tb storage that I need for what I do. It was interesting to note that both the 256 Gb and 512 Gb SSDs in these Macs are soldered directly into the motherboard and so they are completely none up-gradable.
I do find the micro-controller like design in the M1 chip interesting. The M1 chip includes either 8 Gb or 16 b of main system RAM on chip. This gives the important micro-controller like advantage that address and data lines for the RAM need not be provided outside of the chip which reduces its pin count. I like the fact that this RAM must be really fast because it is all on chip. All of the RAM must run at close to cache speeds. This does of course mean that if you buy a $999 Mac Book Air with 8 Gb of RAM on chip this can never be upgraded to 16 Gb without trading up to a more expensive model with a 16 Gb M1 chip and that it is physically impossible for any model to be manufactured with 32 Gb of RAM. I notice that you cannot yet buy a 16 Gb model which suggests that Apple is having yield problems in manufacturing 16 Gb M1 chips.
One of the most important factors in game performance is that the huge number of calculations needed for AAA gaming can only be made if a system is overclocked. This means that the only hope that Apple has of supporting high performance games with the M1 is if they over clock it and fit it with a fan as big as that in the Xbox Series X. That fan is essential whenever the Xbox Series X runs next gen games.

this has actually given me a reason to like apple products. my opinion of apple in 2 days has flipped from a stupid company that people only buy from for a shiny logo, to an actual competitive company, who is innovating in the laptop market.

This wasn’t really new Mac’s with M1 chip explanation. It should have been like it’s a completely new computer system, like a new console. Old games and programs don’t automatically work but need to wait photoshops etc to release a version for this one. And nothing about these computers running iPhone apps.
