That’s exactly what that question was getting toward, and I do not feel it was expounded upon as thoroughly as the questioner probably hoped. It is a real issue imo… as new technologies that have the propensity to increase QoL or delay death emerge, those with money will have access while those without will not have access. It is easy to imagine a situation where you have insurance and have one of these installed, and then a life event disrupts your income, and you lose that insurance and are unable to update or remove the implant. Important questions, but still fascinating potential.

I have had a brain illness for 22 years, ever since I was 11. Just want to know, when I get my brain operation, is there an option to be asleep when I get it done (I was told I might have to stay awake!), and what are the risks?

brain surgeries are typically done while the patient is awake so that they can make sure they aren’t messing up anything vital, and there are no pain receptors in your brain so it’ll be fine

I wish the technology were available to me that I could simply upload and edit my visions in order to create a movie along with the music trapped in my head. I am certain they would be a success but cannot prove it for lack of opportunity.

People glazing this guy give me the creeps, instead of putting electronics into the brain working on rejuvenative medicine is a better bet. Unless you’re fans of government spying and directed advertising because why would you think it would be different with this? You will get ads in your sleep and the government will flag you for having a bad idea, just because people get a lot of degrees doesn’t mean they have wisdom.

I have a genius friend who thinks brain chips will be the end of free will. His vision of the future is Orwellian, where Elon Musk or someone similar will install a back door into the chips. Once a big enough percentage of the population has the chips installed, the back door will be activated and the hosts will become slaves. I’m old, and still marveling at cell phones. Is this future possible?

    September 24, 2025 at 9:16 am

Based on everything we’ve seen in the behavior of Silicon Valley since the 90s, I absolutely would not trust them to thoughtfully weigh medical ethics.

They have shown a complete disregard for the ethics of privacy concerns, turned computer viruses into a profit opportunity, utilize the strategy of planned obsolesence and exhibit a absolutely careless disregard for the infection of our global media networks with misinformation and political disinformation (including foreign psyops materials aimed at destabilizing democracies.)

You want these people to put a computer chip in your brain?

  28. @suicidalbanananana

    September 24, 2025 at 10:40 am

I don’t really care what companies like Apple or Meta are doing (its just going to be about putting ads and paywalls in your brain anyway so ‘do not want’) and i certainly don’t want anything that was anywhere near Elon in my head either, but then i do wonder what Valve is up too.. 🤔

Consumer BCI that’s half as cool as what we imagine it could be is probably still decades off though, so i’m just hoping we get some nicer VR and AR stuff between then and now.
