@Kongolox ive already done that back in the 90’s.. placed a 3M Clear film projection screen on my windshield. Think of it like clear window tint, and used a micro laser projector mounted on the light bar. Instant Minority Report display.

cool, but because of the way the display works it sounds like it’d be very hard to scale up. maybe if they wanted to they could use multiple of these motorized layers together as well as multiple projectors mapped together

OBVIOUS QUESTION – what is LIFESPAN of such a device? the fast moving screen seems like something that would malfunction over some time, since it has to repeat the same motion so frequently

This would only work in the dark. In daytime, you’d see the moving parts.
This is effectively a 3d mechanical TV. Yes, the first TVs used to use a mechanical spinning disc to make an image.

i think the next breakthrough in display technology is to create a tactile or haptic sensation from a hologram , if we can concentrate light or particles to create a force that creates the sensation of touch that would open up a whole world of possibilities , reminds me in episodes of star trek where the holographic doctor would be able to interact with solid objects yet he was made up of light

Remember early vr? No you dont, that was in the 80’s. This is ok for a first gen but i can still see tbe layers. Giving it 5 years to get good if the space around this is anything like vr now. By that point VR will be too good to care about tiny box displays.

“More than a hologram”? This is a stupider idea than even those Microsoft’s two phones stitched together side by side.
Just think about it… A semi-transparent projector screen going up and down quickly enough to not be seen itself. Who invented that? A middle-schooler? Also could be built by one too. This is not even close to a hologram and is much less than it.

Helical display are nothing new, but they are also not practical which is why it never really caught on. I dont think ILM or Disney is going to allow that in the falcon showroom. Because the environmental lighting would kill the effect not to mention those things can be rather loud. (there is a reason non of the demo videos of it have audio) Same can be said for just about every other POV effect volumetric display.
