Microsoft Surface Duo 2 Review
The Surface Duo 2 has been upgraded in just about every way compared to the original. But is that enough to make Microsoft’s $1,500 phone worth recommending? You can’t use the Surface Duo as a tablet because it’s not a tablet. Is this really to hard to figure out?

I just received mine in the mail earlier today…So far it is the best phone I have ever used…My first dual screen phone and so far I love it…I don’t see any of the “buggieness” that these folks are reporting…This phone isn’t meant to be a tablet but to use as a dual screen device…It is way too early to give a review but so far this phone is snappy and the screen is beautiful…

I just don’t get the Duo at all. It’s a terrible phone due to the folded size and doesn’t work as a tablet. Why would anyone really want it.

Another person that completely doesn’t get two screens set up. I do not require apps designed for two screens at all. I use two separate screens for two separate apps. I have maps on one side and my cycling app on other, watch YouTube on left while chat on right, have my ebay on one and amazon on two and compare prices. That’s power of it. If you want one, big screen, buy a tablet

Not a big fan of the Samsung Z Fold 3 but it makes the Surface Duo 2 look like it’s from 2012 right next to the Z Fold phones..

I got a fold 3. It’ll be painful if i switch to duo2. That huge gap in the middle is gonna be unbearable. Dual screen would be really useful if the most apps were optimized.

Whoever greenlighted the funding for this device at Microsoft needs to be fired now, rehired in a month, and then fired again for their stupidity.

LG tried the dual screen concept in a slightly different way by using a case with a second screen. All I see with the MS Surface Duo is a refined version of that concept without the ability to pop the phone out the case to have a single screen device. LG’s poor marketing let it down and they have now left the mobile market. Reviews like this keep focusing on the fact that there are two separate screens that will never be as good as a single, large screen when trying to use an app across both screens. What they don’t emphasise enough is the multi-tasking ability of the dual screen concept. The ability to have a YouTube video playing while scrolling webpages is the thing I am going miss the most when I one day replace my LG V60 with something newer. I will not replace the LG with a Surface Duo because it’s literally twice the price of what the LG V60 cost when new. I also what something I can slip into my pocket when leaving home. Without the dual screen case that’s accomplished with the LG V60 but not so easy when in the case. I just see the Surface Duo not appealing to many people which is a pity because multi-tasking with two screens is great.

LG V60 with dual screen was way better than MS Duo. Unfortunately, V60 doesn’t have dual SIM support and that’s the only thing that stopped me from buying it 🙁

Microsoft should’ve restricted full screen span to landscape mode. That way content is not cut in the middle while web browsing. Doesn’t make any sense to use it in potrait. Video spanning across the two screens is absolutely unnecessary. There’s a lot of things Microsoft needs to polish on software side. The form factor is great and has a great potential of being a productivity powerhouse while being extremely portable. It seems they have concentrated on polishing the hardware to literal shine, but forgot about the software. This is absolutely ridiculous for a $1500 device. How can they not nail even some simple stuff even in 2nd iteration, it truly baffles me.

Lisa, your confusion about why two screen are better than one sounds bizarre, like someone who would sit all day in front of a single monitor and not realize they would be more productive and enjoy their work more on two monitors. May you and the gang at CNET need to stick to the boring slab phone reviews. These are good for people who can only do one thing at a time.

I own both the Z Fold 3 and the OG Surface Duo. Each device has its unique use case. The Z Fold 3 is a media power house that offers split screen multitasking. The Duo is a multitasking beast perfect for mobile professionals that require a workflow that calls for constantly needing access to multiple applications. I constantly keep outlook running on my left screen for work related emails. And so everything else on the right screen. On the Z Fold 3 this is not easily accomplished or very satisfying. Once I click to open another app, it’s going to completely take over the entire screen and then I must split screen the new app with one running in the background. Then both apps running have a severe narrow aspect to them. On the duo I get both apps in full aspect ration.

Give me a phone with just one of those screens. A phone with a screen that is 3.5 inches wide would do far more for my productivity and convenience than a duo or Zfold. All the standard phones top out at less than 3 inches wide. The old Nexus 6 phone was 3.25 inches wide and I loved it for that

Apps that span and make use of both screens are nice, but they’re not the main reason to use a Duo. Having 2 apps open side by side, with the ability to drag and do between them, is a productivity game changer.

I really like the idea of a dual-screen phone like this. People are natural multi-taskers and this phone makes that easy to do. It’s just much more versatile than a single-screen phone.

Reviews are still depicting this as a primary phone device; this is not a fair approach. The SD2, like the original, is a productivity device (like an apple ipad) that also has the ability to make a call. Keep in mind that this is a new product space and many do not appreciate the gap that it is filling. I also have a surface pro notebook with LTE, but you do not see it being call a phone. Maybe PDA is a better word choice.

With all its faults the Surface Duo 1 is fantastic and expect much more from the Surface Duo 2. Once you go to two screens you don’t want to go back to one. I do wish the apps were optimized for the two screens. It is not cumbersome. Some at CNET seem to want to go out of their way to bad mouth this phone. Yes, it isn’t perfect but be fair and give it a chance. This particular review is decent but is reviewing based on expectations and not real world experiences.

This is a lot lighter than the Galaxy fold 3 disaster, the cameras are a lot better than the horrible z-fold 3 cameras, the battery life is a lot better than the Galaxy fold, I think this is a much better choice if you are after a to screen foldable phone 👍

I disagree. You don’t understand that the reason for having two discrete screens is to run two apps concurrently. The fact that you can span apps is a bonus… If you think more apps need to be able to use span mode, you fundamentally don’t understand this device.

We must realize that the candy bar style phone is outdated and this form factor is made for a certain type of person. Judge this phone based on the candy bar design is not fair

The surface duo is a productivity machine that takes multitasking to the next level. Only a person who value this feature will get it. Issues are mostly software related and am sure upcoming updates will fix them all. Am tempted to get it. It’s different

How did you not mention multitasking? You just focused on spanning apps across both screens when that’s not even the point of having two screens.

when will microsoft knows, camera doesn’t matter to your duo clients, making big cameras and makes it impossible to fold or even put it on a flat place is destroying the phone itself
