It brings new people into the HAM world.
@Alli_Katz
June 10, 2025 at 2:59 pm
I didn’t realize there are unlicensed ISM bands that allow this. I know that HAM and other radio-based comms must be sent in the clear, and are not allowed to be encrypted, so this threw up a red flag. Looks like the catch is that the transmission has to be less than a certain threshold, though. But, with a mesh network, that wouldn’t be a problem.
I was looking to do this with a Pi Pico and a Waveshare Lora a while back. Bought hardware for it and started developing the communications side of things before I realized I knew sparse little about the legality of radio communications. Stopped me in my tracks.
This is neat. Ive already got the gear, so I might as well make one.

Ok, so Cellular One ( a.k.a. Verizon today) had a peer to peer “push to talk” short wave radio service in the late 90s and early 2000s that was incorporated on certain cell phones…. had whole family plans you could purchase. And by the way, um….CB radio???🤔

June 10, 2025 at 4:57 pm
The case shown was designed by MuziWorks and is called the “H1” which can be 3d printed. The fitting board is a “Heltec WiFi LoRa 32(V3)” and then also a lithium battery that is for the designed dimensions of the case. The antenna seems to be the one included with the Heltec board.

@TrinitysTalons
June 13, 2025 at 7:25 pm
its aes256 encrypted, the max transmission is 255 bytes limited to plaintext only (so no security risks really) and output power without a ham license is 1W. you do not need a license for this.
