Great video and Dr. Barnhart is a great host, but the section on Maya mathematics is quite silly. He’s just describing a base 5 number system with clunkier symbols, as opposed to the base 10 one we use

  30. @tigermunky

    May 22, 2024 at 5:19 pm

    There’s something I don’t understand….must be aliens.
Do you think that in 1000 years people will assume that aliens built our cities, because it’ll be considered impossible for people living in the 2000s to build such tall buildings with such ‘ancient’ technology. They’ll say it’s impossible to build something like the Burj Al Arab without the help of alien technology.

so… the Alien thing. I really think it has more to do with an underestimation of what our ancestors were capable of. just because they had limited tech didn’t make them incapable or stupid.
The same people who think the Mayans and Egyptians were being school by aliens think the same of Stonehenge, so it’s not a race thing.

Very good video, the only thing I disagree is that Yucatec Maya isn’t the biggest mayan language. By the information of the last censuses in Guatemala (2018) and México (2020), that position goes to K’iche’ Maya, that has more than a million speakers, followed by Q’eqchi’ Maya, which also has a little more than a million speakers. Yucatec Maya, even thought it is spoken in a wide area, it has less than a million speakers. And one thing he didn’t say, was that during the classic period, most of the big cities in what is now known as the southern lowlands spoke most likely a mayan ch’olan language, which is more similar to the modern ch’orti’, ch’ol and chontal mayan languages. Yucatec mayan was spoken more in the northern lowlands during this period, and it spread to the middle and southern lowlands only until the postclassic period.

22:05, shows 3+5=8 in mayan math and immediately criticizes and discredits “western” (the numerals we use are arabic) math…. this man might be a little too obsessed with the mayans and his critical thinking apperas to have been pushed aside

by the same logic, the roman numerals are also more elegant than our modern math, as I + I = II. But how in the world are you going to represent and use anything other than natural numbers?

Only 4 unique scripts? Cuneiform, Egyptian, Chinese and Mayan?! What about hindi and latin?! Sinhala, rongorongo? mongolian? Nko? Ethiopic? (serious questions btw)

  71. @nephatrine

    May 23, 2024 at 6:39 pm

Really cherry picking with that 3+5 example. If you try that with 3+4, for instance, that elegance falls apart a bit. And you could say it’s just as “elegant” as roman numerals which were developed in the west which has the same property pretty much in specific cherry-picked examples like that.

Loved this btw – not trying to hate or anything.

It feels so dismissive to say the Mayans (or any other early humans) couldn’t have made things without aliens. They were humans, and humans are creative, and stubborn, and seemingly obsessed (as a group) with making things! It’s incredibly humbling for me to think about how much was accomplished by early humans!

  86. @than217

    May 24, 2024 at 3:59 pm

Barnhart’s lectures on Great Course are amazing. He’s a cool dude too, he answered questions I had after I traveled to a few Mayan sites. May 24, 2024 at 8:15 pm

It’s so funny how so many people react to a culture which had so little in common with our eurocentric POV (Aliens, lost tribes of Israel?). Get over it!

They built their own civilization according to their own way of thinking, and yeah it’s quite different.

The confusing bit is that they were forced to conform at sword point with the Spanish culture. So their modern culture is adulterated with the Spanish and prior Aztec influence. They are the same people, but they no longer have the same pure culture they evolved. It is interesting that so much has survived despite the coercion.

Thank you Dr. Barnhart for underscoring these truths

This was wonderful, thank you! Subscribed 🙂 The Maya mathematical system is like the tally system, but more refined. 8+5= 2 bars and three dots 9+. 13=22: 4 bars, 2 dots.
32 +13=45=9 bars. 34+4=38 which is 7 bars and three dots. Absoluely wonderful system but I wonder what happened with very high numbers?

  145. @damonlaru8646

    May 26, 2024 at 1:16 pm

I completely disagree with your perception on the elegance of the maya mathematical system. The western version is praised for its sophistication and perfection by all mathematicians worldwide. Strange how you found elegance in such a primitive figure. It’s like comparing stick figure drawings to a Picasso.

The math segment is missing a crucial bit. How did they write bigger numbers? 20 bars to write 100 would be a chore for record keeping.

    • @DIGINONProductions

      May 27, 2024 at 6:29 pm

The system is base-20. Depending on positioning the dot means 1, 20, 400, 8000, etc. The bar means 5, 100, 2000, 40000 etc. depending on positioning, So 100 would be a bar (5*20) and a shell (0*1).

Not to be petty, but the reason the world has pretty much stuck to the arabic numeral system is because visual counting systems like the maya system break down at scale. Imagine having to record a transaction of 1 million clay shingles or something by hand, it’d be ridiculous. The arabic system is still vastly superior because it works at single digit levels as well as it works at seven digit levels.

Fellow archaeologist and paleoanthropologist here! I cannot appreciate enough how much he touched on the conspiracy of aliens being directed solely towards POC/Indigenous groups, as if they were not as capable as the “more white” civilizations and could never construct such impressive structures on their own – like the Greeks and Romans. He has always been such an incredible archaeologist! There is *almost* never a question of aliens (or giants) helping the Romans build the Colosseum (which had the capability to have naval battles within it), The Colossus of Rhodes or Nero, Trajan’s Column, the Pantheon, the aqueduct systems, so on and so forth. These hurtful conspiracies are crucial to debunk in our field, and not everyone is willing to touch on the subject; particularly the older people in our field. Working for the museum industry, you can guess what kind of people always ask us these questions. They also tend to throw a hissy-fit when we reach the human evolution part of the Paleo tours.

Here in my county in rural Kentucky there are at least 17 burial mounds, and the city of Cahokia is not far. So it’s not likely he found a Mayan city but he probably found something.

The thing that always frustrates me and blows my mind about the ancient alien theory is that you never see this question brought up in Western Central European civilizations. No one’s asking if aliens built the Stonehenge or the leaning Tower or Pisa or any of the Greek temples like the pantheon or the coliseum or any of these other things that would be totally qualified for ancient aliens to help build if pyramids also qualified. Just really shows the racism of these sorts of thoughts
