“Music is tied into the universal divine alignment of all things. Which we see in mathematics some but music speaks to the unspoken within that language and also speaks to the mind, the heart and the spirit all in one.”

OK, among all of the lovely things in this video… Green Hill Zone. That’s usually one of the Sonic the Hedgehog songs I’m most likely to ignore, because I’ve heard it so many times, it kind of loses some of its power.
But when he plays the tune so thoughtfully at 20:39, and especially that arrangement at 20:55… it makes me smile, and even tear up a little.

One thing to add to the “feel” discussion: He plays it but he doesn’t mention it, dynamics is really important for feel. It’s not just rhythmic intention, it’s dynamic intention as well. It’s alternating loud and quiet to emphasize and accent your part

Fantastic. Really, just fantastic.
One of my favorite parts though, watching Batiste try to play _without_ “feel”. He made a good effort, but I think that might be the one thing he can’t do. 🙂
@Luke.Elliot01
September 10, 2025 at 9:08 pm
I got better just watching this. Not all practice is done at the instrument. Consuming content, or even having a conversation with somebody that has a different perspective inspires new playing.

@Toon81ehv
September 11, 2025 at 1:51 pm
When he’s playing “with feel” what I’m hearing is he’s adding rhythmic variation, what I guess he calls “swag” and dynamics: he adds a bit of emphasis to the right notes and it really makes his playing sound so much better. He doesn’t say it but I bet if someone pointed it out to him he’d agree.
@onexslickxtrick
September 11, 2025 at 1:58 pm
This is a great video, and I absolutely love his answers (even the one I’m gonna talk about) buuuuttttt…growing up I had an upright piano that DID have a lock on it! It had a key cover with a lock and the top part also had a lock. I understand why the top part did, but I was so mad the key part did as a kid cause I didn’t have the key and couldn’t play it if it was locked 😂 (I assume that’s why the lock existed, so us little kids couldn’t bang away on it LOL) so if you’re out there, person wondering about the lock, it’s cause of little kids lol

”Music is a communal activity”. This made me tear up. I’m a professional performer in the studio working on my debut album. Been a professional for 13 years.
But lately it feels like my fellow players just completely abandoned the notion of communality. As if the main objective is money or a strong digital presence.
I know I might sound dramatic, but I’m starting to feel that the music in music industry is only secondary to the industry. And it breaks my heart.

Loved all his comments, with one small exception—and it mostly doesn’t matter anyway, it’s just a technical foul.
The pedals are: left = una corda on most grands, or some substitute mechanism on most uprights
Middle = “sostenuto” or “sustain” in English, so in a sense he is right to call it a “sustain” even though that’s not the usual name people give this one
Right = “damper” because it RAISES the dampers off of the keys, so that they ring out. This has been called various things in history. It does “sustain” the sound after you release any keys you play while the pedal is depressed. In the 18th century, this was done with a lever mechanism first, then with knee levers in Vienna, and a pedal elsewhere. Back then, instrument makers were enamored with the hammered dulcimer, and it is thought that this mechanism was in part invented to recreate the “sound” of that dulcimer. Maybe we should name it the dulcimer pedal! Because the pedals weren’t already confusing in their names.
There’s also more possible mechanisms and more possible pedals.

The Jon’s opening riff sounded a bit like an homage to Johnny Costa’s playing style on “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.”

As a professional piano salesman/technician, Jon Batiste is not very good at explaining what the pedals on a piano do 😂 still love him though

I’m so glad he got the video game question and gave props to the amazing Nobuo Uematsu. It’s sad to me that video game composers will never get the recognition they truly deserve just because of the medium in which their music was used. We need more amazing artists like Jon Batiste playing and openly appreciating their music!

I’ve never understood how any equal temperament scale can “sound” better than any other. Their equal pitch differences was the whole point of creating equal temperament scales, wasn’t it? I can understand how the scale can affect hand positioning and playability (e.g. the use of open strings on a guitar) but on a piano, the relative pitches are identical, except for possible tuning tweaks at the extreme ends. So, can someone please explain why someone would prefer a particular scale over another (as Jon prefers E flat)?

He doesn’t so much _choose_ to play the piano; piano playing just falls out of him naturally, compulsively, as if his soul and body feel weird and caged when he’s _not_ riffing all up and down a piano keyboard. He isn’t even looking at what he’s doing half the time. He just _is_ piano playing.
