Jacob Collier plays and transforms a familiar tune through a variety of different emotions. Jacob takes “Londonderry Air” (more popularly known as “Danny Boy”) and pulls the song through many twists and turns as he transmutes the piece on the fly. How does the song sound “angry,” or “sad”? How about with more complex emotions, like “disruptive” or “betrayed”?

You are absolutely otherworldly and superhuman!! I’ve never heard music described like this before, but i understand it completely on an emotive level. Fabulous video idea and entirely original. Thank you for making this happen. I appreciate your wisdom and creativity more than, I think (like many others), you will ever know. Thank you for being amazing. And thank you for being the ambitious goal towards which most musicians reach for. Keep on keeping on. You’re amazing. x

Jacob, this is an awesome exercise and you did a great job with the emotions.
My favorite one was Guilt and the tier 3 ones. You would be great at film soundtrack and also I believe that style of composing is called music paintings (creating with emotions or something)
One of the best music exercises ever man 🙂
Would love to see some chord relationships (CRs) modal stuff with this technique

Jacob…I know money is great…but art could be the worlds path to peace. Be an educator to teachers and place them in schools based on your teachings. I don’t mean to be insulting…but teachers are uninspiring artists that didn’t make it. But great music is the reassurance and peace that we gave it our best.

Jacob – love your music. @Wired – come on – the name “LondonDerry” is very divisive. To the majority in the island of Ireland it is called Derry. The ‘London’ part was put in during the colonisation of Ireland by Britain in recognition of London investors.

this is just another demonstration of what I call “quantum brain”. Is the ultmost trust in the intuition, aways being ambitious and curious, open to possibilities to happen for themselves without the interference of the ego, and soar without effort while profoundly rooted in knowledge.

seeing this kind of human working is like seeing a surfer inside a tube of a very big wave with profoundly transparent blue water. it is shapeless, it is powerfull, and you never ever get used to it. you cant help it but just be floored with wonder and be grateful to witness it. in the realm of the graphic arts you have the corean artistist Kim Jung Gi. its a succession of many “wow” and “what?” and then “oh my god” and in the end you go like “ok let me be here for sometime to collect myself before going on with my life”. this process may be interrupted by rage and confusion like “why, god?”. also a profound hope for human kind’s future. also tears.

The world is super crazy right now, but I believe we’re in a quickening. Lots of things are being brought to the forefront of our attention so that we can make a quantum leap as a collective.

I feel like this music exercise is also a step in that direction.

Hate to go against the grain here, but to me it felt like Mr. Collier wasnt evoking most of the emotion in me. Seems like i need to take a psychopathy test looking at all the comments. Obviously great skill was used in this performance, and obviously i do not possess anything close to a gift as him, however i was answering the question: “Does the music make me feel/feel like the emotion displayed?” With no. It is obviously very subjective and could be entirely beyond the scope of this video, since it is about him and his way of expressing these emotions and not necessarily the audiences viewpoint.

Wow this was amazing! I felt like Tier 3 in particular told a very beautiful story… I can vividly imagine the long lost friend showing up and there is a lot of happiness and playfulness seeing that person again, but eventually falls into the inevitable reasons they lost their friendship in the first place, guilt re-emerging for these past faults. But in a beautiful way, they move beyond past mistakes, forgive each other, and find closure in the process. That’s my long-winded interpretation of the story of Tier 3!

Tier 2 is whack. I get some vibes of like sailors at sea on a foggy night and the flirtatious part is like mermaid’s singing, they get confused and try to continue on, but it gets loud disruptive and so they cave. Initially its reassuring as the mermaid’s beckon them in with their song, but then it turns to betrayal as they drag the poor sailors underwater and kill them.

This was really nice. It serves as a great overview of compositional styles in the pianistic canon.

My only critique would be that for the last chord-change in the guilt section, there was a sense of lifting brought on that doesn’t seem to match up with the ever downward pulling gravity that guilt has on one’s psyche, creating self doubting downward spirals and delusions that everything is heavier than actually.

    Wonderful video!

Here’s the problem: The interpretation isn’t through the song itself, it’s through other pieces of music that elicit that emotion being applied over the song. The question being, how well does the song …its performance and structure that was known elsewhere overlay the original tune.

The most enjoyable and fascinating thing about music is the ability to express and evoke emotion in real time in our own personal way, and when done in real time with spontaneity, that moment can never be replicated. It is amazing how our personalities and our experiences with these emotions come to life in such a real and unique way through music, and can be captured in a way words can’t express. When you are able to sincerely project that through music, there is nothing like it. This was so fascinating! I found myself thinking of the musical decisions I would have made, and it was fun and inspiring to hear the Jacobian interpretation and analysis. Brilliant!

    Tier 2 Story:
A guy is frightened to approach a girl…
When he finally does… they start out on a flirtation back and forth together…
Suddenly she doesn’t respond like she used to, and he grows confused…
He’s already given up wooing her… but thoughts about her keep disrupting his days…
Suddenly, she messages him! And they embark on a reassuring conversation…
When at last… she mentions how she met someone… leaving him betrayed…

This would be a perfect Technique to have a film-maker create his soundtrack…

Or maybe more someone like Don Hertzfeld!

YES! A typically Heart-Breaking Don Hertzfeld Graphic Story to this sound would be amazing! 🙂

the “guilt” and “forgiveness” combo really struck me here. the low stocky chords made that higher F# feel like the thing you’re guilty about, constantly popping up to remind you of itself, and then when forgiveness comes in, that F# is still there sometimes, but gets washed away with the brighter feelings, or notes, of forgiveness over time and… yeah. that part felt really cool to listen to.

This is absolute hogwash. Jacob collier loves to do this kinda pseudo sciency music crap aimed at non musicians or hobbyists. Emotions are subjective. I get sad when i hear a happy song sometimes. And happy when i hear a “sad” song. To think that you can just like capture the essence of a word/emotion instantly looking at it is complete and utter hogwash. Shame on u collier for even taking part in this hocus pocus BS…i guarantee if i jumbled the order of the words/emotions no one would ever question it.

Western music is crap! You have to take help of multiple notes to portray already established sounds in mainstream the “so called established moods”. Purity of a single note is the real way to connect to one’s own cosmos and hence connecting to the God inside each one of us!

Not only does this man understand music in a way that is incomprehensible to most people but what I enjoyed most what seeing his face light up at seeing his own face. Imagine being so comfortable with who you are and excited by the person you have seen yourself become that you light up and smile at the sight of your own name and interpret it into such a happy melody. Good for you Jacob, absolutely beautiful. Thank you for your talent and loving who you are.

It’s so hard to describe what you feel when listening and watching Jacob Collier play and explain his music. He makes his genius and technicality so personable and approachable. You are able to connect and understand him regardless on how much you know music and theory.

It’s interesting to watch this as a guitarist who plays a lot more with texture than notes (because I’m not very good at harmonies and scales but I am good with effects pedals and weird extended techniques), sort of imagining how I would achieve these emotional effects with my sort of noise/improv style versus how Jacob does them.

I would think the range of emotive expression he(or anyone else performing a song in this fashion() does so as an exercise in non functional harmony and could really be a springboard for doing so.

  430. kwixotic

    October 31, 2020 at 9:33 am

It blows my mind to think that anyone can understand AND SHARE these emotions with you simply by listening and not at all understanding the why behind it.
It took you much longer to analyze what you did than to actually do it. And the result of the analysis, while very interesting, was nowhere nearly as profoundly understandable as the music-making itself.
Emotions are complex. Music is complex. You show that they can and do intersect and converse (warning, there is a requisite: an insanely skilled, talented and sensitive interpreter). Words are so much less efficient.
But you know how to wield those as well…
    Thank you Jacob Collier.
