Love your music and everything you do! I have seen some crazy things that you have done but I can’t get over the fact that you were a semitone off the circle of 5ths when you sang your f#. People in the comments are gushing over how you sang it “perfectly” but as someone with perfect pitch as well I had a double-take hearing you sing it.

I feel like the reason the piano keyboard is laid out the way it is is because of the enharmonic equivalence of say e sharp and f natural (because of how we use the circle of 5ths divided in 12) meaning the most ergonomic way to lay these out is in ‘groups’ of 2 and three? It would also be very hard to remember all the notes without a recurring pattern for each, say octave?

While jacob clearly has an enormous knowledge of music theory and how to apply it and also an enormous amount of enthusiasm and passion for music, I don’t think he’s very good at explaining certain concepts in a way that makes sense to a beginner. The circle of 5ths is what really stuck out to me in that way. He really is just on a whole ‘nother level of something or other and finds it difficult to return to the world of us mortals.

Seems to me music theory was developed to describe and explain music… music theory “sounds good” because music evolved over millennia to sound pleasant to humans. Nobody sat down and developed rules for music absent the existence of music.

6/8 is a way to count heavily swung 4/4 time
123 456 123 456
1°& 2°& 3°& 4°&
The “°” is the larger swung space in the 4/4 count
Its easiest to hear this for yourself in a lot of old american blues music where it’s hard to tell if it was written in swung 4/4 or just 6/8
One of the best examples is somebody loan me a dime by Fenton Robinson. The drummer is playing the hat like hes riding a 6/8 beat but the snare is hitting on the 1,3,2, and 6 making sound like a heavy swung blues jam

It must be something else to have perfect pitch, must it not, Jacob?
But I hear it goes away later in life, as it happened to Gary Burton, Oscar Peterson and others.
I hear that, when that happens, it’s quite shocking and disconcerting.
It’s like discovering that your trusty old map has been made suddenly completely obsolete.
But until then I’m sure it must feel like a superpower, because it is, in many ways.

I’m sure he knows this and just didn’t go into it, but I think it’s interesting: an octave can be split into 3 major thirds (c – e – g# – c). The tritone was considered unholy because it divides an octave into 2, thus disrupting the holy trinity.
Also, it blows my mind a bit that he just sings the circle of fifths like it’s nothing.

A different take on the circle of fifths: given our common pitch system of 12 notes, a “fifth” is a distance of 7 notes. 12 and 7 are relatively prime, therefore a complete “cycle” or “circle” of fifths exists in this system.

Music theory question: As mentioned in the video, the white keys are the C major scale (and its modes). All twelve tones in the octave include the black keys. The black keys form the pentatonic scale (major or minor, and whatever you’d like to call the other modes of that scale).
So: why is it that all 12 tones minus a major scale leaves the pentatonic scale? Why are those two sets of notes exact complements that add together to make the full set of 12, no overlaps and nothing missing? Just coincidence? Or is there some deeper structure there? (Those two interval patterns neatly divide the circle of fifths between them into contiguous regions.) Is it also coincidence that those scales are a tritone apart (C major and F# major pentatonic)?

Great vid! But if you’re interested diving deeper into “which is the saddest key” and “why are the black notes in that pattern”, look up equal temprement. The intervals on a piano aren’t precisely the harmonic ratios you get out of a natural instrument like brass – they’re an approximation to make playing in all 12 keys possible.
For this reason, when you play a song in a different key on piano, it takes on a subtly different tone and emotion. Some keys may sound sadder than others, because the harmonic ratios are all slightly different.

June 5, 2021 at 1:30 pm
About the second pedal/soft pedal. What I found out is that on classical Grand piano the middle pedal slightly shifts the whole mechanic, so hammers hit just 2 strings instead of 3, 1 instead of 2 etc.. resulting in more calm/smoother sound (probably changes the Timbre? :D)

Jacob, in your re-harmonization demo for the song “Hey Jude”, you were using chords containing a common note, but those chords were not respecting the key signature that the song was meant to use — so to me the result did not really sound coherent for that song. Or is there something I’m missing here? Most grateful for your advice.

Jazz still has some sort of release though. Otherwise it’s more sadistic jazz. For music to catch on in some context it needs some sort of appeal.

OMG! Jacob Collier, the modern genius of music (I’m a HUGE fan), says middle C is C4????? But… that’s wrong…?? Middle C is C3. Or could I be wrong? I learned about C3 long ago when learning about MIDI. So I search for it, and dang! It’s BOTH!! Of course, labels and names are arbitrary, but we do need to agree on them so that we’re all talking apples, not oranges. Anyway, I found this:
“Middle C, being a benchmark, can either be C3 or C4, but regardless, they represent the same exact note, viz: On any MIDI keyboard, assuming that any transpose feature isn’t activated, Middle C outputs note #60. Korg has opted to use the name “C4” to designate this note. Yamaha and other companies call it “C3″.”

Hey! I recently started learning extensions on the piano and I was curious if anyone could answer my question about the 11th. Can you only make an 11th chord with the dominant 7th, or can it be made with the major 7th as well? Take C11 for example, you need C-D-E-G-F-Bb arranged in some manner (I know you can exclude some notes as well). Can you do the same thing with the major 7th and make a Cmaj11 with some arrangement of C-D-E-G-F-B? I’ve tried and it sounds really strange, maybe that’s the dissonance he was talking about. Thanks for the help!

June 10, 2021 at 3:36 pm
Absolutely love you Jacob! I wish that you had been a little more scientific about a few of these answers. Yes there is a reason piano keyboards are equally divided between the octaves. Sound wavelength doubles and halves with octave changes. Minor and major keys being associated with a specific feeling is a western invention, and major triads sound very sad to Indonesian people for instance. I’m certain you’re one of the best musicians living, so I know you know all of this. Don’t dumb music down to think you’re making it more relatable. Most musicians are nerds anyway and would love to understand the nuance. Thank you for all of the beautiful music you make Jacob

4:15 i didnt really like jacobs answer here tbh. Asking why music theory sounds nice is like asking why food tastes good. Its because it was meant to taste good. Over the course of human history through trial and error we arrived at certain techniques of cooking, we learnt what spices tastes nice together, what doesnt taste nice together etc. Recipe books didnt always exist.
Same applies to music. Music theory didn’t always exist. We made music and then realised that certain groups of notes sounded better than others. So we grouped them and gave them names etc. And thats how you get music theory. The person who asked the question was thinking backwards. Music theory didnt give us nice sounding music, nice sounding music is what music theory is based around.

When was the tritone no longer forbidden? I remember there being a tritone in Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 10 No. 1 3rd Movement. (One of the chords I played in the left hand was made up of the notes, A-flat, C, and F-sharp. C and F-sharp are a tritone apart.)

Respectfully disagree with the answer to the last question! When you add a singer, of course, the human voice will feel different on different keys/registers. However, if timber more or less stays the same, to me it’s the same generally speaking. Like, move half a tone up or down on a piano. Doesn’t matter. People with relative pitch cannot even tell where they are until they get a reference.

black keys represent tone tone (semitone) tone tone tone (semitone) so the tones are the back notrs however this is only true in C major which is how the piano keys are kind of laid out. So it would not be true in any other key

Good to know the sharps and flats are the more interesting ones, because they’re literally the only keys I understand when I play piano.
Then again, I’m only learning by ear and have no idea how to even approach music theory. Written notation is quite literally something I can’t grasp, no matter how long I try to figure it out.

I don’t understand if it’s his humor or what, but how hard is it to say that to turn any major chord into a minor chord, you lower the third of the chord by one half-step? It has nothing to do with “weighing it down”. Just makes it seem like he’s mocking the question.

The tritone is not really evil, just to clear that out. And the answer to if keys have actual differences besides the pitch: I would actually say no, it might depend on the range on an instrument still. Organ sounds monstrous on C minor since the lowest note of the pedale is a C. (Passacaglia in C minor bwv 582) Also D minor sounds amazingly dark on that instrument for the same reason, the D on the pedale is one of the lowest notes. On the other side, guitar sounds very open and full in G Major since the chord of G Major is usually voiced with several open strings on it and for some reason it is a pleasant chord to hear. Same for cello with C Major and stuff. but i don’t really feel there are differences in the way music affects us emotionally radicating or depending on the key, or, at least, we haven’t figured that out yet.

This video shows a very interesting phenomena that get us musicians. Some of us, like Jacob, have music concepts so deeply internalized (not only perfect pitch) that it becomes hard to express it (just like explaining a color), in the other hand there’s musicians like Adam Neely which doesn’t have perfect pitch, but has studied the foundations of music so deeply that they can explain the nature of it very clearly to anyone.
After all none are better or worse in any kind, they’re just different and it’s amazing to see/listen to how great these different approaches to music sound in the end.

PAULO JAZZ
June 30, 2021 at 2:00 pm
Regarding the reharmonization part please let it be clear of a true understand of the chords that Jacob is playing to avoid confusion. Well this is what you need to know to understand the chords he used ……””””””””Basic regarding diatonic scale, Theory regarding chord substitution and maybe intervals. Don’t go and play all as majors chords or suffer to figure out because it not going to sound good at all ”””””””””’. You can harmonize anyhow by taking consideration of the song you’re playing, the soul of the song and other aspect that might help you to not twist the song into something totally biter as we are experiencing with the young musician of this time.
PAULO JAZZ
June 30, 2021 at 2:49 pm
Also just to add up where he speaks about Triton regarding the question that was asked about intervals. Speaking Triton into Jazz is nothing rather than the implantation and superlative use of of Blues which is the melody of Seventh. That’s why he played a blues by making substitutions of Seventh chords or tension chords. He used Tritons into all chords to explain the use of that particular intervals ….but the concept of Tritons are basically useful for Seventh chords….

Watched all his videos. He’s great. I’m looking forward to seeing him after he looses his need to impress people and himself with his ability to be unique all over the place and jazztacular too prove himself to the world.
I look forward to seeing the Jacob that has fallen in love and had is heart broken and comes to terms with his need to make the world love him.
Then… he’s going to be amazing.
Right now he’s an over sharpened pencil. For those that have ears to understand what I’m saying, you will understand.

He’s a great instructor. He answers the not so technical questions with the same enthusiasm as the highly technical questions. He always seems to be having so much fun.

You can tell he’s a full time musician with extensive music theory knowledge. He also knows how to explain it in a way that person without this knowledge would understand which not all people can do!

I think music theory matters as much as physic matters. Just like how you can walk and jump without understanding physics, you can listen to and enjoy music (maybe even play something) without knowing music theory. However, you need it to compose music, if not for anything else then atleast for the sheet music notation. Understanding stuff like harmony can make it easier to discover new things. So just like anything else, it depends on your goal with music whether or not it “matters”.

6/8 can have 3 emphasized beats too. I think the main difference between 3/4 and 6/8 is the quarter note is the foundation of the beat in 3/4 (4 for quarter note) and the 8th note in 6/8 is the foundation (8 for 8th note).

If you had a piano where the white keys were set up as the c whole tone scale instead of the c major scale, it would just go white black white black the entire time
