The algorithm is based on so many different things, your searches, likes, watch time, even your gender, age, and also location of where you live. Of course it’s going to be biased and recommend things based on what it thinks you’ll want to watch. That’s the ultimate goal, to get more watch time and get you addicted. It works for both sides of the political parties. It can definitely be harmful too because of this, causing way too many conspiracies, fake news, and overall bad ideas to spread. But is that really the algorithms or YouTube’s fault, or is that our fault since we are the ones who watch it?

IDK… I feel like the expected behavior after I specifically search for, watch, and then like a video would be the website showing more videos like that. I mean who actually wants “neutrality” in these things? If YouTube was still showing me the default homepage and recommended videos after they’ve known my tastes for a decade, that’d be horrible for both their business and my enjoyment of the site.

IMO, people like the idea of unbias tech and digital privacy in theory but not in practice.

Algorithm bias toward what people already believe is an expected and normal outcome in this type of media. The more troubling thing is when the higher-ups at YouTube decide to fight that problem by damping down those opinions and beliefs they don’t personally have (voter fraud, for example). The result is that certain opinions become amplified and others get censored based on what an insular group of people (youtube employees) wants. That’s a far more troubling problem.

A lot of drones were used here to create images in the sky. With this number, these drones must be coordinated autonomously using software. Such drones were often spotted in the night sky with lighting to simulate a UFO / UAP for the population. Such swarms of drones are also used as weapons by the military and can be equipped with numerous weapons / sensors / devices. These drones fly + coordinate via an artificial intelligence.

The algorithm is a computer. It doesn’t have any bias. It doesn’t care what people think nor about what society thinks. It’s giving you videos based on your searches. It’s your own fault for being so close minded and not looking up both sides of whatever argument is going on. People need to stop blaming things like social media and start pointing the finger at themselves and others.

  72. Will Charles

    November 22, 2020 at 9:58 pm

I think about this all the time, and would love what Guillaume is talking about. I’m not at all interested in YouTube premium, but I would pay to get a control panel for my algorithm. Instead I opt to use the “not interested” feature, but I find it doesn’t retain and predict in the long term based off my “not interested” — it just affects the one session. I think of every video I watch as a coordinate on a map, and the algorithm is trying to suggest new “locations” to visit; instead of leading me me to new vistas, however, it tries to keep me in my stomping ground. I can use multiple searches to expand my horizon, but YT doesn’t keep in mind my old interests so much as it thinks I’m in a totally new phase. If I could just type in what topics I like and see what other people are up to in those realms, we wouldn’t even need an algorithm; look at reddit.

  73. Talin

    November 22, 2020 at 11:49 pm

These were highly predictable results, and therefore didn’t provide any valuable information. Even if someone only recently started using an app such as YouTube, it’s easy to see that if you search, view, and like content with any kind of leaning, including hobbies or personal routines, they’re going to get both suggested content and targeted marketing related to that. So this is a waste of time to watch all the way through.

We only wish this is how algorithms actually worked. For example, why did yoga come up in each of your feeds? If you get an ad for tampons, how is that related to you being left, right, or moderate? Obviously there’s more going on than what you view, like, and comment on.

More important is how algorithms target based on other factors, like your tracked location and ‘assumed’ language preferences versus what you say in your profiles on social media. For a long time I was getting both content and marketing targeting me for another nationality and language other than the ones I specified, and it was completely irrelevant to content I actually viewed and liked. Honestly, it was infuriating, so I finally had to get a VPN, keep it on all the time, and stop using or allowing anything to track my location so that I would no longer be on the list as ‘lovin’ it’ on another continent just because I’ve been to that country and walked past one of their restaurants more than once.

These algorithms aren’t clever. They’re not doing what they’re intended to do. They’re obnoxious.

Algorithms should go by profile content, not tracking and targeting.
