Apple’s new iPads leave us reflecting on the tablet’s future and what screens we need in our growing gadget pile. In this week’s Tech Therapy session, Bridget Carey and Scott Stein work through their subscription panic and the disastrous state of our digital libraries. Also, Bridget highlights the “newstalgia” trends from the 2025 New York Toy Fair and how tech evolves our playtime.

Unless you need a specific MacBook app or program, most people will be fine with an iPad that you can plug into an external monitor and use with mouse and keyboard for web surfing, email, spreadsheets and word processing, and then undock it to use as a tablet. But they go on and on about why it can’t be both, but it can for most people.

You are editors… What specific task you have in your daily life you can’t do with an ipad? If there are any problem, it is with your workflows not your devices.

I’ll be honest with you. I actually am one of those people that do not want a convergence of the iPad with the Mac. I get work on the Mac, but on the iPad, I can consume video and read content.

My basic iPad is for watching videos or browsing while on the couch, MacBook is for finances or when I want a keyboard and lastly my real money is spent on my gaming PC.

Physician, I use the M4 13” iPad Pro as my primary device. I have an M1 MBA at work as a way to print because the hospital will not let me have an AirPrint printer on their network. M2 Mac mini to manage my home server. A17 iPad mini for reading and trips. The iPads are the everyday device. Yes it is a different way of doing things but it is a different os. Once you come to terms with this you realize how capable it is.

iPad’s are for content consumption and artistic creation.
Laptops and desktops are for work.

When I hear people say you can’t get serious work done on an iPad, I feel like they need to reassess their skills because my iPad has completely replaced my work laptop. I can handle all the tasks I need with it. The iPad offers much more than just streaming and drawing, although those are great features too. But let’s be clear: an iPad is not meant to be a laptop (in my opinion, it’s actually better), and we should stop expecting it to replace a laptop. Many people use their laptops or desktops just to browse social media or watch media, the same things they do on an iPad. However, power users know that, as Apple said years ago, “there’s an app for that” — an app for getting serious work done.

I tend to agree with you on this. I will admit, there is something about the ability to switch between desktop spaces on a Mac that feels different and more capable than on iPad, but I absolutely get work done on an iPad. Only in rare cases do I prefer to do some things on my Mac. So, yeah, I think people overdramatize this issue. Although I will say, having a keyboard and trackpad makes a huge difference. Just the iPad itself….that actually is noticeably less efficient for me when it comes to multitasking work.

Perfect evolution from now would be transforming the current products in accessories you get as you need. Vision to have a workstation, iPad for whoever needs a screen, and Mac Studio for those who need more power, storage and memory.

2:45 I do get annoyed by people wanting iPads to be laptops, if you want your iPad to be a MacBook then buy a MacBook, but the iPads is in many ways better than an old fashion computer, it’s the computer of the future. It still lacks a few PC like features to be even easier to use in offices but it doesn’t mean it should go back and turn into a desktop computer.

So if you took a mac air and added a touchscreen that would seem to fix a lot of things. For me its a little more simple, just have mac and ipad run the same OS. I find Amazon Prime worth it for me but its only for the free delivery. How about software configurations such as office365, Parallels on the Mac side. Though I respect Vmware that made Vmware free for home users including Fusion.

Digital ownership is why I am uncomfortable buying games at full price. I’m more willing to have a subscription because there is no expectation of ownership.
@ogdanem
March 9, 2025 at 4:42 am
I believe that Amazon Kindle users should claim Amazon for a refund. Why should customers pay full price for a book they do not actually own? Amazon changed their policy for renting books, and therefore it would be fair for Amazon to adjust their pricing for rental books to around $2, rather than charging more.

Apple isn’t going to combine the iPad and Mac line because both still sell independently. They make business decisions and not just product engineering and UX decisions.

The real reason that Apple won’t make a laptop with a touchscreen is MONEY. If Apple can convince people to buy an iPad and a laptop, why cut out one of their options? At one point I had both an iPad Pro and a Mac MacBook Air. I also spent extra money for a keyboard system for the iPad Pro. At the time that made sense to me but seven years later, I’m now wondering should I just pick one. Do I really need a laptop or do I need an iPad Pro with a keyboard? The more I think about it the more I think I should take a MacBook Pro rip out the screen and put in an iPad screen. What do you think?

If you want the iPad to watch YouTube and Netflix or for your kids, buy the entry model. If you want to draw, sketch, write notes while also watching YouTube and stuff, get the Air. If you want it smaller, get the Mini. If you’re really doing big graphic artworks, and need the better displays, get the Pro. But if you’re doing “computer” work like editing, photoshop, typing, coding, development why bother with the iPad? Clearly, Apple is the one to blame here with the wrong marketing. iPad and Mac are two totally different products for totally different experiences and I want them like that. If you don’t use the Pencil, if you’re not an artist and want your $1000 device to do computer stuff, why are you buying the iPad instead of a Mac?Occasionally I use my iPad as sidecar or secondary display, but otherwise I need it like what it is for painting on Procreate. Sure, you can imagine an OLED touchscreen 120Hz 13” iPad with FaceID and M4 Max processor that has a detachable Apple Pencil Pro and aluminium keyboard and trackpad and runs macOS and runs all Mac and iPad apps as you need them, but Apple doesn’t want to leave behind that money cannibalising their products.

Went through 3 iPads, won’t get another one ever again.
Thin and light laptops and 2-in-1 flip laptop tablets work better.
Lenovo, Dell, Acer, and Asus all have better build quality and better customer service than Apple.

Whilst Amazon selling their pads dirt cheap, Apple is charging way too much? With the same amount of money, I’d rather buy a laptop! Laptops are now cheaper and lighter.
