Windows 11 shows how a desktop operating system can shine on a tablet. Maybe this can inspire Apple to port macOS to the iPad Pro.

@Matthew Ferrara it has nothing to do the experience. It’s all because of sales and profit
David Empire
July 16, 2021 at 2:52 pm
@jimmy chen I know, but the average iPad Pro user probably spends around $1677 on the iPad Pro, when you include the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard, and that’s just to get a 12.9″ display, 256GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM. To put it in perspective, the M1 MacBook Air with those specs costs only $999, and you could buy a full iPad Air to supplement it. No Mac user would buy an M1 iPad Pro just to use as an accessory for their MacBook. It is far too powerful and expensive for that. The iPad Pro has all these great features and the ultra-fast M1 chip and it deserves to run macOS. In fact, Apple could likely be making more money in the long run by doing this, and it would make touchscreen laptops and 2-in-1s get real in the same way as ARM laptop/desktop chip did in the Mac Transition to Apple Silicon. A “MacPad” could possibly be as “revolutionary” as the first iPad or the first MacBook.

@Matthew Ferrara They need to learn that they are overcharging people. Apple already has a great potential Mac in their hands (the M1 iPad Pro) that could solve all the current issues with our current MacBooks, like no touchscreen, no 120Hz, no Mini LED, no 1080p webcam, no 5G, no Apple Pencil support, no 2-in-1 design, and a boatload of hardware features the iPad Pro has that no MacBooks have that would make potentially the best Mac out there, being basically the portable equivalent of the Mac Pro/Pro Display XDR setup.

First of all nobody is asking/forcing you to buy an ipad. There are specific ppl with specific needs who would rather use an ipad over a mac.
I dont want ipad to run mac os. No matter how well it can be brought over thats not what will help the ipad.
Why restrict the ipad to mac os when ipad os can be more appealing and better in t he future? Sideloading isnt the only thing that can help ppl.
When all apps and games are developed for ARM, there is no more a need for sideloading.
Ipad os is the most preferred operating system on a tablet.
Surface pro laptops are just a flexible option but still a touchscreen laptop cannot replace a tablet and a tablet cannot replace a laptop(specific use cases exists but definitely not for everyone).

@Eshaan I didn’t say the iPad. I said the iPad Pro. The iPad, iPad mini, and iPad Air should still run iPadOS. They are secondary devices, less powerful, and way less expensive than Macs, and are not meant to replace them in the same way a Chromebook is not meant to replace a Windows PC. But, the iPad Pro, which, itself has the M1 chip, costs more than the M1 MacBook Air and even the M1 MacBook Pro when you add the Magic Keyboard, and contains so many pro features that macOS and Mac apps could take perfect advantage of, the second device argument is inexcusable. macOS is the only solution.

Shortcuts and Widgets what a stellar update, nothing they’ve updated is new these are all features that should have been available at the start.

I think once you stop expecting ipad to run macOS, you will feel that iPadOS is really a step up from the previous version. Remember, why would Apple let iPad eat its own Macbook sales?
Additionally, in case anyone forgets, they still need iPadOS to run on the previous iPads.

And for ppl criticising their marketing, they are not saying that it can replace everyone’s computing needs, they are just saying “maybe ipad could be better for certain ppl”

This isn’t the conversation that most youtubers want to have. This is the same stance i have and ive never owned a single apple product yet. However, my ipad pro is supposed to be here on Monday.. still, i feel like the ipad can fit the bill for 95% of people. The only things it really cant do (that most people want) are heavy duty video and coding. It can handle damn near everything else.
I see the ipad as a motorcycle. It has most of the functionality of a car, but it cant do everything a car can. And thats ok. If you cant only live with a motorcycle, get a car. Simple

@Melvin Brookins true i like your analogy.
Ppl expect a company to behave in a way that they want.
I mean if the product doesnt fit your needs nobody is forcing you to buy one.🤷

You can tell users are disappointed by the iOS 15 updated; was at the Apple store recently and the iPad table was just a dead island. Hardly anybody looking at the new ones because they realize, what they likely already have is good enough. Even when Apple stops providing updates for an iPad it still maintains its useful. I currently have 2017 iPad Pro 12.9 and honestly don’t see anything must have in the newer models. I picked the M1 and its nicer with the full screen, but the same software works the same on my 2017 model.

Same here. I have the 2017 12.9 iPad Pro and it does everything that I need from an iPad. No need to upgrade at all.

My 2018 can still basically do what the M1 does and is still a few years ahead of the software. It’s good for my wallet though.

This is pretty perfect for students & creators.
Now you only need a laptop for pro software applications…. For professionals. If only iOS had mac os software support. Then it would literally be perfect. Hopefully the m2 & a15 can somehow make that happen

This is one of the problems I have with tech reviewers giving these “self-centered” reviews. They almost always focus on the needs of the reviewer. All I kept hearing, in this case, is how *I* was expecting more, or *I* wish Apple would have done this and done that as if they should have focused on what highly jaded tech reviewers expect – on and on and on. And then you (yes, you, Scott) do an incredible disservice by trying to convince your audience that they should feel the same way as you. And then you top it off by criticizing Apple for not doing the things YOU wanted to see in iPadOS 15 beta, with an occasional blip about how Samsung did some kind of thing similar to Apple earlier. Egad!
You did more whining about how Apple didn’t meet your expectations than anything resembling an actual update or a follow-up to previous betas. What do you really think viewers are supposed to get out of this kind of review? To become more jaded and unimpressed? What about those viewers who wanted to know more about most of the changes of this beta? Poor old Scott. I guess the tech world is not revolving around you fast enough.

I have my own conspiracy theory; that the new M1 on Macs was so well received by reviewers that other OEMs got the hump with influencers and since then the overall consensus from the YT sector is to hype up Intel/MS and criticise Apple? Influencers maybe forgot the memo to hate on Apple and were too nice with the M1 Macs?
Anyway, Apple never promised Mac OS on an iPad and reviewers like this are speaking for a tiny niche collective that have their own agendas and are unrepresentative of the whole iPad market. I am no brainiac but understand the pro moniker is more for the apex of the range than being solely aimed at prosumers, much like the iPhone Pro range, 99% of buyers are probably not prosumers! They take the literal view to make their own POV without any nuance or sensibility? They need to review it for what it is not what they want it to be, otherwise they are hypocrites for not whining about an XPS 13 clamshell not being able to write or draw on or take photos! The iPad is a tablet that does a bit more and there are cheaper iPads if you still need a laptop?
The conspiracy runs deep with nearly all YT creators copying and pasting this critique of iPads and although it feeds the anti-Apple sentiment, it is unreasonable and poorly done. I am glad I think for myself rather than listen to this reviewers bluster!

@andyH_England if I wanted MacOS on my iPad Pro I would have bought a Mac. I sold my iMac years ago and went full iPad Pro and my tech life has never been better. More pro apps? Sure MacOS? No thanks

Nearly all YouTube tech reviewers seem to think the way they use the iPad is the only way. If it doesn’t have functions they want it’s bad. Just because it has m1 chip doesn’t mean it’s now turned into a laptop. There are lots of pro apps you can run on the iPad, just one at a time. If you want true multitasking get a laptop.

Apple: We’ve put the all-powerful M1 chip in the iPad – so now you can do widgets!
Microsoft: With Windows in the cloud, we’ve just made the iPad a true desktop-class computer with REAL multitasking!

July 18, 2021 at 2:01 pm
Widgets have been on the iPad and iPhone for years man. They were locked to the left of the home screen and on the iPad you could add them to you “today view” which some of us prefer over what iPadOS 15 brings. I was upset that view was no longer available in the new OS.
AJ M
July 18, 2021 at 2:14 pm
I was being facetious Joseph – I was using the Widgets as a metaphor for the horribly limiting software Apple uses in comparison to the powerful hardware. They completely mismanaged people’s expectations as most asked – why such powerful hardware if you’re just going to limit the ability of the software?

Honestly reviewers should really get over this whole expectation of a tablet to be a mini computer/laptop. If you need a laptop, get a laptop…….you need a phone, get a phone…….a tablet should be an in between. The iPad seamlessly running desktop website is even a great improvement. App developers should just tap into the advantages a tablet has to offer.
It’s that simple

Sadly iPadOS is still a bit of a toy OS and just not enough to get the best out of the iPadPro
Better to just buy the cheapest iPad you can get.
I expected at least:
1. Multi User support like MacOS, Windows, Linux, Unix, Android has had for ages.
2. External screen output at native external screen resolution and not just screen mirror but a proper second screen
3. Definitely expected more from the file manager, at least offering ability to format external storage with different filesystems. Seems like they finally got a copy status indicator. Keen to see if it also works copies over network?
4. Support more filesystems for external storage
5. Consolidate all settings for keyboard, mouse, pen in one menu option rather than scattered everywhere
6. On the topic of mouse and keyboard the use of it can still be improved, mouse input using web office productivity apps on Safari is still flakey for both O365 and Google Docs.
7. Need a proper app tray. At least we finally got one like iOS got last year already, but still way off MacOS, Android or pretty much any other OS has had for many years. I really really don’t need all my damn apps on my desktop like I’m a toddler.
8. Ability to place widgets and shortcuts anywhere allowing me to have a clean clutter free desktop. Even now saying you can is total BS when in actual fact they still force the top left grid layout
9. Full on MacOS Safari and Chrome from the Mac. Not glorified desktop like mobile versions. Online design services like Marvel Apps or even AWS consoles work well on desktop but simply does not work well on iPad. Heck some online services like Sendgrid, the console just crashes on login.
10. Perhaps a bit more freedom to sideload apps. Really frustrating that apps like Synology DSGet is not allowed on iOS. (I know this will ever happen)
11. Hopefully all that Mac Silicone productivity/pro apps make their way to iPad too like full MS Office rather than the current gimped mobile version. Would love to also see Flutter, final cut, Adobe suite, xcode on it.

iPad os is Going to REMAIN IPAD centric… the overall community is expecting things that apple never specifically hinted ; stated or promised
This means… iOS windowing system… not macOS windowing and Mission Control
iOS packaged apps … meaning iOS Dev kit apps … the pro apps that we love from macos where made using their own code kits including apples own pro apps
What this does mean is app developers get the chance to design and make the best apps for iPad instead of dragging and dropping why they created for something else including other Apple products
Tgis is no different then apple making the mouse for the original Mac’s apple didn’t want developers to bring their command line based apps over and calling it a day it eventually let those apps in but within the Visual user interface they created fir new computers
Furthermore the store of the iPad has always been the user and apples 3rd party app developers who are unlocking more capabilities within the device … the iPad Pro never had a narrative other then being more flexible for creators
