“If the sun is hot how is outer space cold ?” Excellent question, Jacoby Brissett, current quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts.

It turns out that outer space is full of extreme temperatures. The sun is a ball of gas and fire measuring around 27 million degrees Fahrenheit at its core and 10,000 degrees at its surface. Meanwhile, the cosmic background temperature—that is, the average temperature of outer space—hovers at negative 455 Fahrenheit. The real oddity is Earth.

Equating heat and infrared radiation is misleading. Infrared is used for fiber optic communication without much heat loss. Extremely low and high temperature objects only radiate small portion in infrared range.

Obviously it’s not the same magnitude, but how else do you think heat moves through space?

Great, another video with pointless and distracting background music. Luckily it is not quite so bad on this particular video, but it’s still there. Listen, I love your magazine, I really enjoy your content here, but this is a serious question that has perplexed me: what is the deal with _so many_ videos these days having disruptive background music, because it is very prevalent in recent years on alot of channels. Is it money, do channels get a fee for playing someones “music”? Is it poor editing equipment and it is not realized until after upload? Are all sound engineers tone deaf nowadays? You don’t even need background music _at all,_ so it’s not as if it adds anything to a video about the sun, etc. Apologies for the mini-rant but it’s getting so I cannot enjoy content hardly anywhere anymore and I cannot wrap my brain around such an unforced error as this or understand how it has become the ‘norm’.

@Destroyer ~ Bahahaha, three back-to-back posts, it’s almost like you are unnerved. Nah, you’re not a spastic, short-attention span kid at all. This may blow your mind, but not everyone sits on YouTube all night waiting for the off-chance of comment responses to fill the empty void in their life and a desperate need for external validation. Some of us actually have lives, and family, and jobs.

I find the production of these videos very gimmicky with the side camera shooting of the speaker not looking into the camera. What’s the point? Proving you have more than one camera?

0:27 No it does not (unless you count the nearly irrelevant rogue atoms), space is no temperature. You can jump out into space naked, you won’t notice any significant cold before dieing from lack of oxygen (or touching a large object). The only, significant, way you loose heat in space is radiation.

Decades before software like Premiere and iMovie made video editing cheap, easy, and accessible for everyone, the only option was chaining a conglomerate of vintage 80s technology – multiple camcorders or VCRs and a TV – to craft custom analog video. Then the Videonics system changed tech history forever.

With professional-grade setups costing up to six figures at the time, the Videonics brought simple editing to the masses at a tiny fraction of the price… in theory. The reality of the Videonics video editing system was a jumbled mess of retro tech that took a near-miracle to make your kid’s 8th grade jazz band concert video look a little more polished.

And getting it all to work over 35 years later? It took 8 VCRs, 2 camcorders, 3 Videonics units and 4 remotes to create a 1987-era YouTube masterpiece. But in the end, it revealed the beauty and drive of the first-generation analog filmmakers and videographers who made YouTube possible for all of us.

Nearly 50 years ago, the Polavision camera blended Polaroid’s revolutionary instant film with on-demand home video – and the result was a landmark advance in analog technology that would become a mystery of science and a winding international journey into vintage tech.

Because now, generations after Edwin Land bet his half-century legacy of innovation and the company he founded on the success of the Polavision, I need to figure out how to get the thing to work… and only one man in the world could help me.

I traveled to Vienna, Austria to meet Florian “Doc” Kaps – the man behind ‘The Impossible Project’ that saved Polaroid from the dustbin of history. With his guidance and his private store of old Polaroid video tapes, perhaps I would be able to record a modern YouTube video with my vintage Polavision camera.

Through it all, Doc immersed me into his world of analog technology and the philosophy behind his mission to re-integrate analog into our daily lives. We cut lacquer records, we felt the fires of an analog restaurant, and we spent too much time trying to resurrect a relic of the past – because technology, vintage and modern, is all about people.
