Buy* the cheapest android phone you can find that you can install lineage os on, install lineage os on it and use it to backup your photos unlimitedly!
Tip: turn off backups on your main phone, set the quick share folder to be backed up on your lineage os phone and keep it plugged in to the charger, and every time you take pictures quick share it with that phone and viola your photos are backed up unlimitedly 🙂

Since now rooting loses you access to some features like banking and payment apps, AI features, RCS chat… Etc…
And it’s also better imo than setting up a NAS with your personal saving storage, because you can still have the nice Google photos features like searching your photos, grouping them, memories… Etc

Best option is get a NAS and backup your photos and videos like iCloud without subscription.

Micro SD 😂😂😂😂😂😂 That’s why I never trust Apple or Samsung. I’m using my Samsung Note 20 Ultra with a 2TB microSD ( cost all 400 )euro black sale ( transfer all picture and videos) by shareit, while the iPhone 16 Pro 1,100 euro… I have it all. 😂

If you are a mac user, the easiest method isn’t covered by Cnet (surprisingly!)… just open Photos on Mac (with same Apple ID) and move photos from Photos app to your mac’s drive.
Since your Mac & iPhone Photos app are syncing (this should be on), the deleted media from mac will automatically be deleted from iPhone…

if you have a dropbox account, the photo upload is really easy. i believe amazon photos offers unlimited storage for photos and then has paid storage tiers for video

I’m sure AI can fix your icloud bug. Better and faster than Apple. 😊

Do you have any recommendations for local storage? I would like to replace iCloud completely. Perhaps have storage in 2 different physical spaces

Is there a way to export a WhatsApp chat/conversation (to the computer) that keeps looking like the actual WhatsApp conversation with the message bubbles of me and the person(s) that I am in the chat/conversation with and not just boring plain text? Thanks 🙏

It is not iCloud that is the problem…

Deleting screenshots is a good habit to develop.

Also remember the 3, 2, 1 rule for photo backups. 3 copies, 2 different storage types, 1 off-site.

Lastly I highly recommend backup the photos as an export from Apple Photos as either JPG or HEIC (my preferred) files. Backup up the Photos library file is okay but not future proof and not accessible to other apps. I had an old Photos library from an old Mac that couldn’t open on the newer version of the app. Thankfully I still had the older computer and was able to convert it into a compatible version for the newer version.

Loved your iCloud storage video, Bridget! Quick tip: With family plans, another member can subscribe separately ($9.99/month for 2TB), then use shared albums for extra content without upgrading to 6TB. Also, a great future story idea could be about managing iMessage storage—maybe options between “keep forever” and “one year” would help. Thanks for the awesome content!

It’s by design that Apple doesn’t allow sorting videos by size on iCloud. They don’t want you to manage storage, they want you to pay. Scumbag anti consumer company

Here’s a tip: buy an external hard drive instead of an external SSD. It’s much cheaper.

A 4TB hard drive (~$130) is about half the price of a 4TB SSD (~$300).

Sure, a hard drive is slower than SSD, but for archival purposes, you don’t need high speed.

1:26 I don’t need to get better. U do. I don’t have a single pic that I don’t need my pics from the past 10 years take up 5 GB. I don’t see why u need 10 blurry pics that ur never gonna see again. U even admitted u don’t go back and view the pics so why bother keeping it ?

Just pay it. Apple owns you, and you own nothing.
