Legendary hip-hop producer Swizz Beatz is on a mission to revolutionize the way artists do business. In this glorious talk, he shares some of the ways he’s helping fellow creatives thrive, including a roving art fair that gives artists 100 percent of their sales, a new commission system for galleries to fund living visual artists and Verzuz, online musical celebrations that bring joy to fans — and sales to musicians. “If we’re not protecting the arts, we’re not protecting our future,” he says.

The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design — plus science, business, global issues, the arts and more. You’re welcome to link to or embed these videos, forward them to others and share these ideas with people you know. I grew up with your music, art and creative humanities and I like your perspectives and take how someone puts their life to produce something that ends up being worth 300 % the cost ( it’s mind blowing). I found your Ted talk inspiring. Thank you

Artists have already been corrupted by corporate culture and privilege. It’s false creativity if you are part of it.

Once your art is made and given to the public it’s no longer yours. That’s why you create art to begin with. Art does not equal profit. This man is just greedy.

    • Anne Day

      July 14, 2020 at 7:03 pm

“That’s why you create art to begin with.”

As an artist, I strongly disagree. I create art for myself, to express myself, to understand myself and know myself in the context of my world. Why I create it is very different from why I share it. And even then, I share it for myriad reasons. This idea that art is created for any external reason is part of the reason artists have to sell their souls (figuratively) to big corporations in order to eat.

      July 15, 2020 at 2:47 pm

You should be able to live a comfortable life off of your visual art as any other type of artist can

    • R3l3ntl3ss

      July 15, 2020 at 4:07 pm

@Manu why? Businesses fail, companies collapse, just because you make art doesn’t mean that you should make money. Yes I understand that you would LIKE to make money off your art but it shouldnt be mandated that people buy your product. You have to provide something that someone is willing to pay for. Capitalism baby!

I wonder which people that are meant to be inspired by this, given the deliverer of this is wearing a pink cap?

    • Rebecca Leeman

      July 16, 2020 at 8:18 pm

1- its red hat, not pink.
2- are you a homophobe.? You may not be, but either way I’ll share some history for perspective . It shows how so many people have allowed culture to manipulate their emotions and thoughts. (Once again)

Until about 100 years ago pink was considered a male color. It was considered a soft red . And red was considered the most passionate of colors. Passion was entirely considered a male trait. Strength, blood, passion, force, power all associated with the color red. And pink.
This was also NOT feminine. At that time Blue was feminine. It was considered light and delicate like the sky.
So males would wear pink into battle among other very masculine activities.
It wasnt until right before WW1 that manufacturers and retailers decided to interpret the colors differently.
Manufacturers and retailers. Those were the people that decided for the rest of the world what a color of fabric means. Not you or me making our own decisions.
So if you do believe that a color has a gender significance know that its because of commercial influence and nothing else.
So Are you letting corporations dictate how you think??

Companies and their shareholders make money with Artists work. Artists might seek to get employed by those companies or better think of to use their energy to create goods that are actually needed for the poor to survive. Some Actors get Millions for a couple of minutes in a movie while others have three jobs without being able to feed their families.

My art is poetry and I dont place a dollar value on it. If someone bought one for $1 and sold it for $1000, I would say they earned the money by fulfilling the demand. Would my poetry be worthy $1,000 from then? Only to the person who bought it for $1.

I write freely and if it comes at a opportunity cost, I’ve never had peace of mind, so what more can i miss out on? A piece of mine? I’m already at a loss.

Why be so exclusive? Everyone is an artist. And we are artfully made. Why only celebrate certain individuals (so-called “artists”); we are all alive! You are much too exclusive! Why?
