The racial wealth gap in the United States is shocking: white families have a median wealth nearly 10 times greater than that of Black families. How did we get here, and how can we stop the gap from growing? Wealth equity strategist Kedra Newsom Reeves provides a short history on the origins and perpetuation of racial wealth inequality in the US — and outlines four ways financial institutions can expand opportunity for Black individuals, families, entrepreneurs and communities.

My relatives never owned slaves in America. They were runaway servants from Germany in the early 1800’s. They came with nothing.

One thing she failed to mention with the housing crisis in 2008 was that it was caused BY banks giving out loans to low income households who defaulted on the loans in huge numbers, resulting in a massive wave of foreclosures.

This comment section is dense! This woman just explained the consequences of race and wealth in America by virtue of her lineage. American Decedents of Slavery (the institution that racially caste black people) have suffered inherited poverty BASED SOLELY UPON THIER RACE. NO OTHER REASON. Slavery was an American institution that oppressed BLACK people. Jim Crow and racial segregation (which was also based upon RACE) further perpetuated BLACK poverty in America. She didn’t even mention the criminal justice system which is part of the reason “so many black mothers are single💡.” Yep being BLACK (particularly black men) also results in longer sentences and racial profiling🤯.

Regardless of whether you agree with her proposed solutions or not. You can’t nullify RACE-based solutions after making black people suffer for their RACE for 400 years. The only way to fix the damage cause by RACE is by creating RACE-based resolutions.

If you’re white and you’re broke it ain’t BECAUSE you’re white! In fact, white suffering is generally based on every kind of reason other than RACE.

The stupid comments about the possibility of casting people based on eye color, hair color, or another superficial feature are asinine. ASK YOUR WHITE ANCESTORS why THEY didn’t pick another feature to target and torture people. Something tells me that they didn’t want their own children and loved one’s potentially being victims of the atrocities that they inflicted upon victims of slavery and their decedents. Just because their kid happened to have brown hair or green eyes🤔. Y’all are simple-minded! And this comment section is gaslighting central🔥.

Why is “Black” capitalized and “white” is not! This shows the “racism” that is instilled by Blacks, Browns, Yellows, Reds, and Whites! Not all of them off course, actually only a mere MINORITY of each race want to keep “racism” alive because the make their “living” (income) of of it!

We need to “return” or continue down the “road” to “a more perfect Union”, one in which there is “LIBERTY and JUSTICE for ALL!” as was and is the original intent and foundation of this nation! As long as Republicans AND Democrats are in “public service”, there will be NO improvement only degradation and division further away from “The American Ideal”!

WE began the journey at dawn the morning or August 19, 1775 when the SHOT that was “heard round the world”, that announced that WE the PEOPLE are ALL FREE and INDEDENDENT and began the formation of the Nation of WE the PEOPLE! One in which there is actual “LIBERTY and JUSTICE for ALL!”

So ALL races need to “relearn” what it is to be American, and ABIDE by “The Charters of Freedom” as this is their pathway to the UNALIENABLE RIGHTS that are enshrined within The Charters of Freedom so they can achieve the equality (wealth and prosperity) that they have sworn an OATH too!

And, living in germany as a white male, I really don’t get how questions like fighting poverty all of a sudden became mixed up with race / racism and inequality of peoples worth. As if black people are worth any less than others.

She is lying. Facts from studies show that there has NOT been generational wealth passed on among whites from the time of slavery! In fact, studies show that blacks from Sudan (in Africa) who immigrate to America do financially better than most other groups except Asians. They are NOT coming to America with generational wealth. They are coming to America with the culture of having a father in the house, and an expectation the kids will NOT get in legal trouble and WILL get a higher education in something that leads to a good job (i.e. doctor, lawyer, etc.).

Develop more and better skills, work more, work harder, and spend less. That’s it. Guess what? No one cares that you’re black or white. You’re either a decent person that works hard, or you’re a piece of garbage that wants a free ride. People that care about skin color are racists. Don’t waste time or energy on racists. They are sad little people that live in a sad little world.

Seems to me that race is over-emphasized in this issue. A poor white family is just as disadvantaged as a colored one, unless there is widespread discrimination against colored americans when it comes to giving them opportunities. Inheritance or estate taxes in particular could enhance equality of opportunity, especially if revenues were invested in programs that give low-income children a better chance at economic success. Again, it’s not largely a racial problem. Even if new policies were made, they wouldn’t only be applied to colored people would they?

It comes down to education. Blacks have as many, if not more (affirmative action) opportunities as whites.
There was just a black President for eight years. The highest office in the land held by a black man. So, this “wealth gap” no longer exists. Nor does systemic racism. Need proof?
Blacks dominate the professional athelete world, which is extremely high paying. There are black CEO’s , small business owners, doctors and lawyers, just to mention a few.
That’s one of the things that is so great about America. There is equal opportunity for anyone and everyone.
And as far as reparations for blacks; not ONE black person alive today had ever been a slave and there is not ONE white person alive today that had owned a slave. So, you don’t ask a group that never committed acts against another group, that suffered NO damages, to pay them for something their ancestors may or may NOT have done.
I completely disagree with this videos host. Education IS the key difference between those who have and those who don’t have. I do agree that access to credit is critical. But creditors don’t look at what color you are. They look at your income, credit history, etc.
This video is almost completely off base. Education is the answer. It sounds like this host wants everything “given” to black people, simply because they are black. That’s NOT how capitalism work. There is no “gap”.

I think that historically whites have had advantages, however today color should not be considered as the sole criterion. There are poor communities of all colors and these always receive less investment, whether in health, education and infrastructure, etc. This gap is not exclusively related to color, if color were the main criterion today, we would not have rich blacks or poor whites. The problem goes far beyond color.

How about we try this? Go to school, learn a skill or trade, work hard, get a job, and be fiscally and socially responsible. Stop asking for handouts. It’s insulting to your race to assume that a formula that has worked for everyone for over 250 years didn’t work for you. Slavery ended over 150 years ago and still you’re mentioning it as if it’s the main reason for wealth gap. At what point do you take personal responsibility.

Thank you for teaching me Kedra Newsom Reeves. I claim not to be a racist white person. This video showed me just how engrained my bias is, I am a product of my environment. I found myself not wanting to watch this, getting slightly uncomfortable, and even wanting to switch to a Tedtalk about a “safe topic”. It’s important to shut up and listen to the facts, to understand the struggle. “managing $17,000 better won’t make a difference” hit hard. Here in TX we all pat ourselves on the back for waving to our black neighbors, for encouraging black owned businesses – but words of encouragement only go so far. To affect positive progress when it comes to systemic racism, signs in the street raise awareness, but changing the system is the only actual solution.

Because it’s pushing a political agenda that pushes for inequality, read what the other comments are saying and stop being ignorant

@Skye I’m assuming that, in all your political acumen, you were one of those who gave a thumbs down. Therefore, I’d like to hear your well thought-out response, rather than a personal attack that serves to betray your lack of understanding and want of heart.

@Just Sophia stop talking like an anime character and do you own research, I’m not gonna waste my time explaining why an evil organization such as BLM is bad to someone who doesn’t want to hear or understand it

There is nothing radical about this. You’re telling me the government paid the slave owners because they LOST a war. But people are upset that the slaves and now the descendants of slaves want compensation for CENTURIES of unpaid work? Make it make sense. Getting an education and a job or opening a business will Never allow black Americans to catch up when it comes to wealth. Income, maybe, but not wealth. Equality is simply not a value in this country.

I’m not so sure what to say or think about this. Anyone else here the same too?

Immigrants come to the US from the poorest countries on Earth. 90% are not white. They show up with a net worth of $0. Within 2 generations their families have wealth equal to that of other Americans. But somehow, the black American is held back by a grand conspiracy and the only way to help is to give them money. Don’t buy this BS.

To my people: don’t start at the comments…watch this video in its entirety and then read the comments. Look at how detailed this presentation is with facts and data, then look at how easily it is all dismissed via negative comments. No facts to debate the points made, just bs commentary about pulling yourself up by some imaginary bootstraps. These people will never allow you to be interested in uplifting our group and will always stand in your way of progress. The time has come to stop trying to appease their narratives and work as a real community for collective uplift.

I have a few issues with the statistics used in this video. Median 🤨 Really?! It’s obvious why she chose that as opposed to average earnings 🤣 Also, she says that education is not enough but most of the things she discussed touches education! Its financial education, political education, making decisions and voting for leaders on a local scale that have plans to develop your community. If federal and financial institutions have all the programs available, it’s everyone’s responsibility to use those programs.

I don’t have investments nor do I own a business. I’m 32, still in school. I come from a family of trade workers. Trades are not well paid where I live. So I work hard, but even if I don’t earn 171k a year, it doesn’t mean that it’s society’s fault. I’m happy and I don’t want to work 70 hours a week to build a business. It’s a personnal decision and this kind of narrow thinking analyses statistics without considering personnal preferences.

As someone in the comments pointed out, it’s a socio-economics problem, not a racial one. I respect her point of view regarding awareness, but to me this is translated into better education for everyone, regardless of color. Obviously not everyone starts with the same “privileges” wether it be financial, family, speaking two languages, being athletic, etc, but seriously, it has never been easier with a little work to find happiness and wealth.
