This would be so more powerful if we knew the back story – did the truth come out – did something change. Is the message simply about the good we do to ourself by living according to our own values (remembering the ‘bad’ people are living to their values too)?

tbh u went through some hard time so im trying to keep that as nice as possible, but you lied to your daughters for 6 months, lost your financial stability, got your reputation in the work environment scrambled, to the benefit of peace with yourself. But wouldn’t u have had more peace by being submissive in order to keep providing for your family ? its not a rhetorical quesiton, i really hope u can answer me. It feels like you feel more at peace whilst doing the “good” thing in the workplace, even though it affects badly your family life. Would u do it again, or would u chose a path that doesnt make you lie to your children and be in a precarious situation ?

ps: im sorry for my english, im not native, nor good or intelligent. but ive faced this moral dilemma and still dont know what is the good choice on the long term.

The message here is great, and I’m all for it, but her talk is a bit vague. The point of giving examples is to create imagery we can all relate to, but, here, she so completely avoided any details to the point that I can’t even clearly tell what happened, let alone judge the consequences of failing to be an “upstander.”

  10. The Restart Point

    January 6, 2021 at 12:03 pm

This is all so vague, I don’t even know what she’s talking about. Is this about some kind of life / liberty-threatening situation or just work place politics? If it’s just work place issues then, welcome to having a job and dealing with other humans!

So your attitude is be thankful you have a job? I hope you are not a boss because I would not want you covering my back, you’d stay quiet incase it ruined your next promotion.

Very sexist. All the bad were men. I was in this situation where a woman was abusing both men and women. Every woman that stood up was fired. 2 men stood up, I was one of them, same consequences. There were only women in the upper managerial structure, many of which were getting hurt by this but all took it silently. This was not in some remote country. This was USA. It was not the men, there was a lot of man hating. What terrible work place, although it was a great job.

Nothing is worth more than your integrity. You own what you know, and you are responsible for it. You may delay them, but you cannot escape the consequences of your actions or failure to act. The cowardly are selfish and only act in their best interest and, as such, become the enemies of society and the pawns of those whose boots they lick. Choose your friends carefully and do not seek the approval of those who go along to get along; they will rob you of your integrity.
