How Scammers Actually Work—And How To Avoid Them | Incognito Mode | WIRED
Scammers operate everywhere—job recruitment sites, across social media, on dating apps and in your text messages. I’m not a victim — I’m a potential victim and thanks to brave victims that tell their stories I’ve remained a potential victim.
We are all vulnerable and there is a scammer for all of us — the only difference between potential victims and actual victims is that the former have not yet met the scammers that can exploit their vulnerabilities.
Awareness reduces the pool of scammers who can successfully exploit potential victims like me.

We need critical thinking classes in schools, kids need some helpful life advice like “if it sounds good too be true, it probably isn’t”… People in positions of influence (or importance ) promoting NFTs and Crypto just makes it worse for folks who don’t know understand them. Like the current administration setting up an “official crypto stockpile” just more BS and grifting, but under the guise of government approval that’s implying legitimacy.

This type of scam is so devastating, especially because the scam happens over several months allowing the scammers the time to launder the stolen funds before the victim even realizes that they were a victim of a scam.

what’s with Americans and randomly putting lots of money in crypto. if you put money in crypto expect to lose it all!
if you’re in a vulnerable position see a therapist first
only give money to reputable sources like actual banks or brokers who are regulated.

Rule #2: don’t talk finances with anyone, don’t tell them how much you have, don’t give ANY sum of money. Period. Rule #3: anyone that wants to move chatting off the dating site is likely a scammer because the sites have tools to screen and catch potential scams. Rule #4: learn to say “No” sometimes. #5: Talk to someone you trust before making any big decisions in life.

I didn’t know the scale of scamming, but I think, the US also needs to make their laws enforcement better. For example, when, I signed up for electricity, I got scam call right after few hours in a new sim card. The same thing happened with joining internet. I could confirm this because when I switched my apartment, and moved the services, it happened again. Could this be coincidence? Maybe. But I doubt it’s about the data being sold to third parties. This “Do Not Sell” thing should happen States-wide and not just on California.

The stigma of romance scam is unbelievable. Intelligent, professional people gets victimized everyday. You will never know how these things happen until it happens to you. These criminals are really good in what they do and the development of AI just made them even stronger! I just got victimized recently and lost as much maybe more than Evelyn did. After researching online about similar stories, I’m sick to find out that there is not a better way to protect Americans or any other person. I kept all my records but I don’t know how or who to give it to. These scammers involved businesses that are legitimate or looked legitimate located in the USA but they are a network of criminals located around the world. I want to help locate these ba$tards but how? Share information if you have any.

This happens to me three months ago. It was exactly the same, letter by letter, the same script used. I ended up losing all my savings, it was devastating and till today I feel ashamed … how I let this to happen to me. I am now rebuilding myself. I still use the dating apps but this time not to look for romance but to spot these accounts. I reported a few since then. I know it doesn´t do much unfortunately, but it gives me a sense of a twisted version of justice by reporting these accounts.

Here’a a basic rule of thumb: If you meet someone online and they start giving you unsolicited investment suggestions and nudging you to wire your money, ASSUME immediately that they are trying to scam you. Doesn’t matter how long you’ve been talking to them or how good you feel about them.

Relationship scams have always been one of the most lucrative since people are engaging in emotional decision making by the nature of relationships, attempting bypassing our typical fiscal red flags.

We are tired of seeing prices go up every year while quality goes down. Add to that the sweatshop controversy and it’s easy to go to other more affordable brands. As you said, kisluxs really popular

Often times the scammer is posing as someone much more physically attractive than the victim could normally get. This happens due to selfishness and fake dreams.

I bought a LV bag kisluxs years ago. I took it to the LV store in my town last week to have it repaired. The store clerk inspected my bag and immediately told me that the bag was of good quality. She pulled a current bag out of inventory and compared the tags and I found zero differences

Its actually easy to know if its scams or not.
If they asked about anything related to money, its a scam, whether its a loan, crypto, investment, etc.

When they sell you the idea that an item (in this case, crypto) is more valuable than your money, you forget you’re talking about your actual real-life money completely. Please don’t think you’re safe, that makes you more vulnerable. There’s a scammer out there for each of us, they just have to press your correct buttons.

The message you are sending out is that you are more important than the story.

This person was very brave to share what happened to them so others know the warning signs.
It’s clips and investigational journalism like this I figured out years later how my Grandma was scammed.
Long story short about 20 years ago I knew of the ‘Email Scams’ asking for money and romance ones but not much else at that point. Someone called her claiming I was in Mexico and urgently needed money for something and they pressured her with urgency she sent it. Years later she was quite surprised to find out not only was I in WI (same state) living my everyday life but I had never travelled to Mexico once in my life. I even had to show her my passport was expired and I never had gotten was of those special ‘Passport Cards’ to travel between the Canadian and Mexican Borders.

also a good rule of thumb is just to videocall them before sending any money. I have sent my online friends money in the past but I always do it within a 24h of videocalling/calling them to make sure they aren’t hacked/trying to scam me. Also I only even consider sending money for ppl I’ve known over a year and I think I know well.

With dating scams, need to also make sure you’re not a victim of yourself – as in rationalising a warning flag because you love the good attention you’re getting and fear losing that. ITS NOT GENUINE when it feels like behavioural conditioning, so shut it down! But I can see emotionally vulnerable people being hooked on the feeling of being desired, seduced, charmed, made to feel special etc, even in SPITE of better judgment AT THE TIME (so not completely ignorant but more delusional), and so they appease the scammer agreeing to situations that don’t sit well, and then post rationalise their behaviour to feel bette, and ultimately slide into a bad outcome
