Physician-scientist David Fajgenbaum was dying from a rare disease that didn’t have a cure — until he discovered a lifesaving drug that wasn’t originally intended for his condition. In an astonishing talk, he shares how his near-death experience led him to cofound the nonprofit Every Cure, which is using AI to uncover hidden treatments in existing medicines in order to save lives. (This ambitious idea is part of The Audacious Project, TED’s initiative to inspire and fund global change.) (Recorded at TED2025 on April 10, 2025)

I do off label all the time, testing myself, it works. Not for rare diseases (I dont have) but I totally agree with you.

When they say off label, they don’t mean generic / off brand, if that’s what you’re thinking here.

In medicine, “off-label” use refers to prescribing a medication for a purpose, patient group, dosage, or administration route/ method that has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for such use or method of delivery.

Anyways, just figured I’d clear that up just in case. 2:52

Im a Dr. Thankful to Allah that i am.
My son who was healthy at 3 months, developed diarrhoea for which he was prescribed metronidazole. Though the diarrhea subsided but his health went downhill. after 7 months and 2 pediatric gastroenterologists later we did not have any diagnosis and his weight was 4.2 kilograms only. yet I thought that there was something wrong when the doctors gave up. I got him tested for giardia and it came back positive. he was given Metronidazole again but it didn’t make him better and was given nitaxonide and albendazole which gave some relief only for the symptoms to recur again.
He became refractory to all the drugs. The pediatric infectious disease dr told me there is nothing that can be done now.
I started him on chloroquine(an antimalarial not used for giardia nowadays)after thorough research. As i thought deeply the reason for refractoriness. I deduced that he might have internal reservoirs that the other drugs fail to clear. And chloroquine has the pharmacokinetics that can help with eradication of reservoirs. I started chloroquine and he has responded.
I’m praying for a cure this time.
Seeing your offspring in misery and not being able to help them is agonizing.
May my son gets a cure this time . and may he grow up to be a beacon of light for others like Dr David!

God often reveals purpose through tragedy. When we pray, we begin to understand why the hardship came in the first place. Dr. David, you’ve risen from your deathbed not just to survive, but to live fully and give hope to those who have lost hope in modern medicine. Continue your noble mission and may god bless you. 🙌
