If Apple is so influential in the tech world, I think this will be the beginning of the end for x86, not just “Intel-Apple partnership”. Other manufacturers will start releasing ARM-based computers and Windows will slowly move to ARM architecture.
Miezekotze
November 14, 2020 at 7:43 pm
Are you even serious?! Microsoft is already moving to ARM and since Windows has so much more programs and apps than macos its going to take a while. Nvidia just bought ARM. AMD,QUALCOMM…. relies on TSMC manufacturing process
Adam Smith
November 14, 2020 at 8:09 pm
We already have Windows on ARM and guess what it sucks, no program compatibility and the emulation is straight up garbage. Also MS doesn’t sell ARM licenses to normal users so good luck running ARM Windows on an ARM based desktop
Miezekotze
November 14, 2020 at 8:23 pm
@Adam Smith Microsoft is actually working with developers to fix all the issues its not a problem at all.

November 14, 2020 at 7:33 pm
Nope you’re wrong intel did not lost apple its just the evolution ARM chips have always been more efficient and better in someway than x86. Plus TSMC and Samsung are giant makers of chips

November 14, 2020 at 8:15 pm
Amazon already runs ARM servers you can use in the cloud. There are AMD Hackintoshes that are quite good so Apple itself will have no problems to use high end AMDs (Epyc?) for their Mac pros.
The only issues are the huge logistics and coordination between the two companies to get a product out; Apple is a highly demanding customer.
The ARM ecosystem is so much bigger and more versatile than intel’s. For example, if you want to build a CPU with 6 DSP’s and 3 GPUs you can. The only competition for ARM I can see in the very distant horizon is RISCV.
The lower end fabs can still spin out parts in huge quantities so TSMC is not the bottleneck except for the higher end parts.
shahriar akash
November 14, 2020 at 8:25 pm
ARM isn’t owned by amd. Currently nvidia holds 90% share of arm.

If came down to QC and Intel didn’t want to play ball with Apple’s quality control issues than it probably time to say goodbye. Since Apple wants to the customer to be satisfied with flawless equipment performance and didn’t want to deal with the costs of both in production costs and costumer satisfaction it makes sense. When it comes to operating costs management the devil is in the details as cutting down on returns and complaints that cost in all areas. If Intel didn’t want to deal with that and were satisfied with having those issues than Apple as an Intel costumer paying their good hard earned dollars for that type of service and no one on the other end is listening time to boogie on out. Don’t blame them as it looks like it good be boom for them to go the direction they are going and Intel will pay catch up.

What i think if intel would have been using its processors in phones then what you are seeing the phones now….
Will completely change and how…. in just 10 years you could run adobe and windows apps on your phones, just a mid sized thick phone in your bag…..doing the job of a pc,laptop, phone and tablet and what not…
But our ancestors knew or i would say predicted the future….that they will went out of business in just 10years cause intel would have to push harder to make them smaller and we could revolutionized the entire system….
Geeta Tripathi
November 14, 2020 at 9:27 pm
But just for their petty profits and protecting their firms, they pushed the entire generation a decade or 2 backwards….
I think they knew what was coming ahead….and they prevented it from happening thus steve jobs and every other tech leaders, knew and had decided amongst them to protect years of business…

Even if Intel delivered their new chips on time without delays Apple has been planning their arm chip release because it’s better than Intel i5 i7 i9 series which is heat causing garbage that cant shrink its size! Yes intel failed to keep the partnership but they never had a chance to stay with Apple forever! Bye intel !!

Intel is being run by accountants, not by engineers. Same thing has been happening at Boeing for years since their merger with McDonnell-Douglas. 737 should have been replaced 20 years ago. Now we have the 737 MAX, a plane that should have never been built, accidents aside.

I am so glad that Apple is finally making their own chips. The M1 seems like an amazing chip that is very unique. Apple will have more control over their computers and that will really be a good thing. I find that the more control Apple has over their products the better. The M1 is not just a chip, but a SoC so it has so many more components on this one chip. This is a big change and will really change the way Macs run in the future making them an even more attractive computer for all users to have.

November 17, 2020 at 8:32 pm
Intel has had trouble delivering processors since at least 2018. The company I worked for (until being made redundant at the end of August) used HP PCs & laptops. Since September 2018 (if memory serves), there were constraints on all models the company tried to use (sometimes desktops, almost always the laptops). Changing to different models (still Intel) didn’t resolve so the company eventually approved some with AMD processors as well.
Meanwhile the CEO of Intel was telling his shareholders that everything was fine, nothing to see here.
