Its why I’m happy to use Brave for a Browser and a Search, ProtonMail instead of Gmail, Mega instead of Drive, GrapheneOS instead of Google Android, OSM instead of Maps, etc. Yes, I’m here on YT, but thats one of like 10 other Google sources.

While I do agree with this being good information that people need to be more aware about. I think you missed an opportunity when letting people know they can go to other services to inform them on how to vet those services. It is not great to jump to another service that says they protect you only for that service to change it’s mind or get bought by another company and then all the data is sold. Be careful when trusting the smaller companies that will say anything to get you and then flip when the money is right.

I had to buy a new phone and was forced to open up/use a google account to use it I am so angry. On my old phone i did delete Goggle store and afterwards nothing was working anymore. Still searching for alternatives … Glad Africa is having his own network now, I might will find a solution here in Switzerlanld

Google doesn’t know me. I’ve had accounts with them for 25 years. I’ve always turned off tracking of any kind, rarely used chrome, use vpns, prevaricated about personal info, etc. They serve me ads for stuff I would never buy 😂

Figure out how to take out stranger so that no witnesses remain. Make sure to do it all under aluminum canopy so that 5G signals cannot track you, and satellites cannot image you. Make sure you mine and smelt your own aluminum so that your large purchase of 50 rolls of foil can’t be tracked to you.

Companies have been collecting information on us for so long that we’ve become desensitized to it, and the risks that it carries. It’s not just because they are getting rich off of advertising to us–it’s what they could potentially do with this information. We have laws against the government collecting our information, but we seem to think this information is harmless in the hands of companies.

Computers are supposed to help us, but instead, they hold us to standards that only computers are capable of. We read the privacy policies and user updates that don’t summarize the constant updates– well, maybe we read them…Right. We take a small degree of control by turning off settings on our devices, only to find them quietly restored after the next update.

The only way to be secure is to go off the grid, but maybe that isn’t secure either. The truth is, everyone’s winging it in a world where technology has the upper hand. Sure, you can opt out–but you’ll pay for it socially and functionally. We never really had a choice, because technology was like a drug to the vast majority. It changed our reality, and forced us to comply or become a disconnected outsider unable to participate in much of society.

But here’s the deeper problem: we’ve handed over control to systems that evolve beyond our reach. Our information floats in a virtual cloud, and we don’t know how big it will grow, what future tech will do with it, or who will be pulling the strings.

Except Google and Facebook are in my experience, simply terrible at targeted/personalised ads. They don’t even seem to know my gender, let alone anything else, it’s actually rare to see a relevant ad. I do however bin cookies wherever possible, but even so both services do actually know my gender and yet ads are as irrelevant as generic TV or poster adverts.
Seeing ads that are of relevance isn’t actually a bad thing in one sense. Not having to put up with ads that are of zero interest is less crap when having them foisted upon you.
Oh and upping ad volume during ad breaks, simply means people hit the mute button. Something advertisers bafflingly seem to still struggle with, is that ads that are annoying are counter productive. I never watch live TV on commercial channels. I record them and skip the ads. Also saves 15mins per hour.

    September 21, 2025 at 5:43 pm

This does seem to be a lot of “obsolete” info when most people have been using Google products for a quarter century. The horse has already bolted. And as someone else noted, most people don’t care, who cares if the info is used for targeted advertising? That said I think Google has signed its own death warrant by introducing AI. Why would I go to Google if I can just open up an AI app and go direct to the source?

I have actually been wondering how ads haven’t become completely obsolete. I’ve tested giving them access, restricting access, and anywhere in between and no matter what I do Google fails spectacularly at selling me things. For example:

I like video games AND I consume video game content creators on Youtube. I’ve been basically a gaming degenerate for 30+ years. What does Youtube think they will sell me on? Mostly garbage phone games, gatcha games, and other games no “real gamer” is playing.

I consume a lot of music, almost all genres but a LOT of “smart rap”. What does Youtube try to sell me? Goofy mumble rappers and crappy pop music.

Long story short, if companies want to pay google to fail spectacularly at selling me things… go ahead I guess. You’re just wasting your money, lowering my chance of buying your product, and wasting my time when I am on a device/somewhere without ad blockers.

Nothing like getting 3 sets (a pre roll and 2 mid rolls) of 2 unskippable ads while watching a psa about advertiser data tracking smh

I’ve got other far more important things to worry about, like my mental health, than some bloody adverts and cookies lol.

Have to love people whining about Google, while using YouTube. 😂

Google is free everyone. Just making sure you all still remember that when you’re trying to find ways to get around ads.
