In China, kids that show talent in particular sports are taken from their families and raised in schools which isolate them from normal life and in which they are made to train for many hours per day in anticipation of performing at high levels to represent the country. This can happen to kids as young as five, in sports such as ice skating and gymnastics. The children and their families do not have a say about this. The children often miss out on basic education and life skills, and many do not end up making the top tier of competition. They are then left to find their way in the world with the compromised knowledge and skills from the years of absence from regular education, family and friends.
This technology seems to be less about making wholesome opportunities for young people and more about making money for sports leagues and scouting agencies. There is something about it which devalues the reality of a whole human being who has specific athletic talent, and turns him/her into a commodity for someone else’s financial gain.

It proves that the “scouting” problem isn’t just about finding kids in remote villages; it’s about seeing the talent right under our noses that the biased, analog system simply misses.
