How a cyber attack crippled the Colonial Pipeline
The Colonial Pipeline cyberattack caused a major blow to the gasoline industry in the southern and eastern parts of the United States, but it also showed how vulnerable the US energy grid is to more attacks in the future. Solution, retrofit all homes with a system like Tesla’s solar turning whole cities into basically its own power plant. If one home does offline, the others pick up the load and to a bigger point, one home doesn’t take down a whole city.. whereas the current large power plant system, if it goes down, everything goes down.

Unfortunately they will need significantly more amount of batteries to be off the grid and winter times are very cold or some devices can’t be used offgrid….. with everything getting connected to Internet these days its only going to get worse and even tesla won’t be unvulnerable

May 15, 2021 at 5:02 am
Yeah, even without going into specifics, the piece just highlighted what went wrong & why… rather than how it happened & what steps have to be taken to prevent it.
How it happened? Likely because they introduced remote management & control systems which became vulnerable to external coopting of the system.
How to prevent it? Improve cyber security or better yet, isolate the system better from the rest of the Internet.

Colonial should be fined for having created this tremendous mess (entire east coast energy grid collapsed due to its own IT vulnerabilities). Why did the company not invest in cyber safeguards – I hope it’s held accountable.

This attack was against a fuel source affecting transport, not power grids. Address the fuel source attack. How about more pipelines, and more refineries? They have been blocked for ideological reasons. How about more nuclear power plants? All of those solutions reduce total emmitions and reduce risk buy increasing the number of sources and delivery.
This report conflated the electrical power grid with this fuel delivery attack to introduce the argument for “green” power generation. Those green sources are just as vulnerable to attack if their control systems are not hardened against cyber attacks as other control systems. That solution is not new electrical power generation; but new control systems for the plants we have now.

@Jeff Moore This is 2021, not 1901. However much you hate the idea of mighty American tech having to suck it up, your suggestion to ‘plug it back in’ is just absurd. Why would I listen to an analyst telling me that a modern oil pipeline is a complex system requiring elaborate safety and control system based on er, those newfangled ‘computer’ things. I know that already.

This video fails to answer the title question and goes on redirect attention to an entirely different problem. This is a blatant demonstration that political goals are being put ahead of public needs. Renewable energy has the intrinsic need/problem of storage. Rather than admit, fix, or even recognize this problem, blame is always transferred in every news story to fossil fuels.
I don’t point this out to take sides, I point this out as a warning. The politicians are dedicated to failure. Build your own storage/offline capabilities!

“We had to concede to the ransom or we’d be financially ruined”
Then go into financial ruin! I’d rather lose my job than continue to work knowing the company I work for negotiated with terrorists.
I’d rather die than live knowing I surrendered to evil

What make sthe energy infrastracture most vulneralbe is the politics in pricing (price fixing). If gas sellers were allow to set their price (price gouge in the situation of shortage), then there would be no hoarding.

This is modern day piracy and terrorism and should be treated as an act of war. Just think if Americans cyber attacked the Middle East and held their systems hostage for ransom you could potentially financially drain a country. Remember when the English used the pirates to rob the Spanish ships of gold without getting their hands dirty.
