her description of a Dictator was more like what is an Authoritarian. You can be both a Dictator and an Authoritarian, hence Hitler. A Dictator is a person who takes their leadership power by force.

This is actually hilarious and unbelievably biased. The left has controlled most of the big name media for decades. CNN, MSNBC, ABC, Boomberg, NBC, Vox, the New York Times, etc. These are not SMALL news outlets. The right has what… Fox and the Washington Times? When you have essentially 80% of the market share in traditional media and then say that Podcasts and social media is causing the fall of democracy, USE YOUR BRAIN. Think why this is the case!
Also if you had a monopoly on news media for decades and lose it, there’s something clearly flawed with the way your political party is running.

Is democracy still a desired system or even valid if someone like Trump can become president? If the population isn’t realizing it’s getting fooled. Or does it maybe need an update? And what about presidents? I doubt mankind will ever create worldwide criteria for leaders. Europe might. Some mental and psychological/moral health test. Dictatorship doesn’t have to be generally bad. Problem is its image. But this pseudo democratic corporate state, that not only wrecks economy, but also nature and climate worldwide isn’t really a prime example either. You live in a democracy and you got what you voted for. And unless Dump doesn’t start a civil war, you’ll live a democracy for the next 4 years. Under an elected president. Good luck, to us all.

Honestly, I think benevolent dictator would be the ideal, however not as you think – Imagine an impartial AI that can see and control everything and dictates the laws. Obviously that might be bad if the software’s half-assed or it gets hacked, but some kind of non-sentient overlord maintaining law would be the closest to Utopia we can get.

WTH? The answer to what is fascism. The speaker talks about ways fascism has been implemented, but doesn’t outright define the political-economic practice. It is a practice of economic control, where the state controls all economic activity. Private enterprise is allowed, but transactions must be approved by the state. Price and wage controls are the norm. Business operation rules, especially onerous ones, are the norm. Yes, the state is everything, but that quote is in context that the state has the final say in everything.

I’m Chilean and I can tell that dictators create realities, as absurd as they can be, there are LITERALLY TONS OF EVIDENCE about the US Government creating the Chilean dictatorship leaving it in hands of PINOCHET just because they “couldn’t afford having another country with a LEFT president FAIRLY ELECTED during the COLD WAR”, and the saddest thing is, NOBODY BELIEVES THAT HERE even if you show them proof and still blame the LEFT for what happened. Dictatorships create guillible and afraid generations which constructed our own reality based on that. Really sad.

30% of people have authoritarian sentiment. The US’ voter turnout typically hovers around 55%, and that group is heavily biased towards people with certain ideologies to the exclusion of others. If all the people with authoritarian sentiment cast a vote, that’s a controlling majority.

I really wished Getúlio Vargas was mentioned. During his dictatorship (along with all the horrors that come with one) he stablished a lot of workers rights that live on til today in Brazil. No, he was not leftist, he self-couped on an excuse of an alleged (and proven false) threat of communist coup and would prosecute alleged communists and people related to them. Still, he is very important for the workers’ agenda. I would love to hear what’s discussed about him in the area authoritarianism
