I know blackbeards name is pronounced as both Teach and “Thatch” and I don’t really care which is the more correct one because saying it as he spelled it, Teach, just sounds SO stupid. It’s always thatch for me

My wife reminds me that the BBC program _Time Team_ featured Dr. Phil Harding. He _always_ talks like a pirate!

As for parrots and pirates . . . when we lived in League City, Texas — a little south of Houston — parrots had gotten loose and established colonies in the high tension wire towers. We knew a woman who periodically transformed into a pirate. And whenever she did, there were parrots around.

    Coincidence? _I think NOT!_

I read a book when I was younger that said Pirates were much smarter than people realized. 99% of them were multilingual. If you couldn’t speak English, french, and Spanish, you were kind of screwed. Many knew dutch and Portuguese on top of that.

I wonder how many privateers attacked whoever they felt like and then stuck enemy flags on the ships the brought back to port to sell. Even if somebody at port saw through the lie, they’d have a lot of incentive to stay quiet and get their cut…

So are we just going to gloss over when he said most pirates were teenage boys or in their early 20s….? It explains sooooo much! Even why anyone would join a pirate crew after their ship was captured. Pirates were just hormonal, impulsive children with underdeveloped brains all along 😂

Eye patches were because being a skilled seaman meant you were also a navigator and as navigator you had to look at the sun and take measurements. The dominant eye was used to get these measurements so naturally they damaged their eye and this also became a moneymaker as loosing an eye gave you a greater share or a medical pension of sorts.

  53. @MacNab23

    November 21, 2024 at 6:32 pm

If you listen to the “original pronunciation” developed for Shakespeare plays, in part by David Crystal, it does sound surprisingly like what we would think of as ‘pirate talk’. And it is contemporary with the early days of British piracy.

  57. @gaddiusgaddium9082

    November 21, 2024 at 6:44 pm

0:30 Nah, it’s based on the Northern Irish accent, of the time. It was because the Irish were more likely to be privateers than other groups at the time. I’m sure Treasure Island has something to do with it, but there is an historic precedent.

Another reasons pirates drank so much was that hard alcohol or wine was safer than water on board. It would contominate or hold diseases and their was a lot of diseases going on in those times.

Actually, the west (and east) country accent is similar to how they’d have spoken in the 16/1700s across a lot of England.

So many English pirates would have sounded like that.

That accent has survived in the most rural parts to the east and west of the country.

The eye patch thing, you say there’s no evidence of that. Maybe so, it’s not like I have any. But it is something I was able to figure out all on my own when I was a little boy, whenever I’d have to get up in the night and turn on the bathroom light. If 10 year old me is smart enough to do something that seems perfectly natural to me, then I’m sure seaman who spend half their life below deck could figure that out too.

  72. @l.h.2543

    November 21, 2024 at 7:48 pm

The “pirate patch” was used to preserve dark vision in 1 eye when they went below deck. Flip up the patch and they could see in the dark boat. Without sunglasses it would take several minutes for eyes to readjust to the dark surroundings.

  73. @RDSimonse

    November 21, 2024 at 7:53 pm

Bit disappointing how stereotypically eurocentric his answers are. Like,l not even mentioning Zheng Yi Sao, arguably the most successful pirate ever when you consider size of fleet & how she and her fleet ended up, when talking about female pirates?
Or what about modern day piracy, like Somalian piracy and it’s root causes?
Why limit yourself to just the stuff that’s already well known in western societies instead of including those interesting stories?

Why would a pirate need a patch over an eye that was damaged or poked out? Were pirates worried about their appearance?
I suspect the ‘patcb’ was more a protective ‘surround’ (not a patch) around the remaining eye where the vision in one eye was lost.

What about Chen I Sao, Rachel Wall, and the infamous Grace O’Malley? How do you exclude these extraordinary women?! These women all had much more experience. Furthermore, Sao and O’Malley commanded their own vessels and had fleets. They were not just some captain’s lover (though Sao started out as one), they were fierce leaders. It is pretty sad that the greatest of female pirates were excluded to keep the lie that “women weren’t really pirates.”

Not true about pirate longevity, either!
Nations frequently offered pirate amnesties, during which time many pirates accepted said amnesties. Some of those would eventually return to pirating, either to be caught and hanged, or to accept another amnesty later. There’s a brand of rum called Captain Morgan. It’s named for the pirate, Captain Morgan, who left the pirating life to become the Governor of Jamaica in later life!

It’s a big budget action series that acts as a prequel to Treasure Island with Michael Bay directing. The story is fantastic, the sea battles are epic and the soundtrack is mesmerising. Genuinely one of the best series I have ever come across, and criminally underrated. Think Pirates of the Caribbean if it was an 18 and had a run time of 40 hours!

Those days of sail were quite the dog-eaat-dog (or rather, ship-take-ship), everyone was doing it, including other countries governments, not just war time. Ships changed ‘nationalities’ quite often. The infamous slaver The Zong was a previously captured Dutch ship. I know that one of my ancestor’s ships (HEIC) was captured by the French, then recaptured a few years later. All the merchant ships had cannon onboard for this very reason, and they used to travel in groups of several ships for this very reason. Then you get into the Royal Navy with their ‘recruitment process’ of press gangs.

No mention of Gráinne O’ Malley/Ní Mháille pirate Queen of Ireland in the 16th century? Known as Gráinne Mhaol (bald Gráinne) because, as a girl, she’d shaved her head to pass as a boy and get to sail. She led a fleet of ships off the west coast of Ireland and was feared and respected. She met Queen Elizabeth I and was treated with, shall we say, amused respect. Lived a long life and was never captured.

“Pirate Support” sounds like I’m waging a sea battle against the Crown, and just got reinforcements.

And since the 1900’s, pirate flags are flown on submarines.

Hanged, not hung when referring to the past tense of hang, in the execution context.

Dude says “hung” a lot. This is incorrect, it’s “hanged.” Makes him seem pretty uneducated to not know the proper term.

Also, in Treasure Island, didn’t the pirates bury the treasure cause they had to hide it temporarily?

Bwhahah I love how the claim that there were many female pirates, then he says there were few, names two, tells about their exploits but when the chips were down they resorted to their feminine ability to be pregnant to NOT be treated like the male pirates. Guess they practiced convenient feminism back then too
