I caught a few Pow Wow videos recently and saw that they featured Hawaiian dancers. Hawaiians were the Native Americans I grew up with. Not sure if this is a recent thing but was excited to see Pac Islanders to be included.

Native Americans are only called “Indians” because Christopher Columbus thought he had reached the (East) Indies in 1492. That anyone is still using that geographically inaccurate term over 500 years later is really irksome to me.

I was told during a course studying the Nimiipuu people (also known as the Nez Perce) of Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, that it was once estimated that 18 million Native people lived in North and South America before the arrival of Columbus. That estimate is now 80 million. It is now believed that diseases such as smallpox tore through the populations in a form of unintentional “biowarfare”. The Nimiipuu people refer to this as “the time of dying”. ☹ (80 million was the combined population of Europe and Russia at that time.)

Many, many years ago I heard an author interview (on NPR, I think) for a book about the Shakers in which she wrote that some celibate Shakers abducted Native American children for the future of the community. I’ve never pursued it, but I’d really like to know if it is true.

Reservations and tribes aren’t sovereign. They cant have a military, they have to allow government access, theyre bound by federal laws including taxation, they cant make agreements with foreign nations. Its fake. If you were truly sovereign all i just said would’nt apply. I sympathize with losing a traditional way of life, but taking advantage of capitalism and the U.S. dollar and way of life, you admit that the ends justified the means when founding this country. Youre not special, youre just a modern American just like everyone else, special treatment should absolutely not be allowed. Gambling was “part of your culture”? Yeah no S, gambling was a a part of everyone’s culture

  16. @MysticDojo

    November 4, 2025 at 7:05 pm

This was really insightful I just wish when talking about Native Americans more than just the tribes in the U.S are recognized, and yes the term Native American by definition refers to all indigenous peoples of the America’s. There are many great tribes in Canada and Latin America (my own family being of Lenca descent) and all affected by European colonization whether it be the English, French, Spanish, etc. I just think it’s sad we’re forgotten about and unrepresented, in a way that’s another form of cultural erasure.

I was a student of Vine Deloria. I did not know he was teh “designer?” of the Smithsonian Native American Museum 3rd and 4th floor “treaty experience’. it was already daunting in a good way, to see history’s truly ugly side on display, but to know Vine designed it, just made it more. MORE of everything.

He mentions it a few times but not in his answer to war: what we now call America is huge; there were many distinct cultures. This applied to war as well. He doesn’t mention that they certainly engaged in more than ritualized skirmishes. Some tribes were brutal, some made “war” more of a sport, and others didn’t engage at all.

There has been war lost by the US government. But there has only been one massacre of the US forces, the 7th Calvary and General George Armstrong Custer. We the Northern Cheyenne Dogsoildgers, Elkhorn Scrapers were the first to the battle and slaughtered them in about 10 minutes. Sioux’s were still blessing themselves off by the time all men were dead, but they got all the glory!

Thank you for sharing this. I just bought Mr. Blackhawk’s book.

I’ve lived most of my life in Arizona. The many unique native peoples here are amazing, beautiful, and distinct. The Diné (Navajo), the Nde (Apache), the Akimel O’odham (Pima), the Tohono O’odham, the Yavapai, the Piipaash (Maricopa), etc. are each beautiful cultures that have survived brutal colonialization and genocide by Euro-Americans.

Native peoples originally built the canals that fed water to what is now Phoenix. They built amazing structures hundreds of years ago that still stand to this day.

I have the deepest respect for my Native neighbors.

As an indigenous historian, some of these questions caused me so much pain. It’s disgusting how little the US is taught about native cultures. I’ve had people literally say to my face ‘I thought the natives were all wiped out?’ (In Oklahoma, too. Ya know, the place that is almost entirely made up of native reservations?)

I have taken tours of the Acoma Pueblo and Taos Pueblo in New Mexico. It is a great way to learn more about the culture and history of their community. There is a museum on the reservation of the Pequot Nation in Connecticut. It is next to the Foxwoods Casino. It is one of the best museums of any kind I have ever visited! Many tribes have museums or tours to present their culture to the outside world.

Wasnt like equal forces were lined up to fight. Facts matter.

Even the term “Native American” is sort of a weird term because it’s like Indigenous peoples have to meet America before existing. It’s a term that almost engages in erasure because it assumes that these people want to be a part of the American cultural experience, for lack of their own culture. Imagine if Americans identified as “Native-Cree” or like a reverse way of identity where Americans assume the “Native” identity of the tribal lands they live on.

In 6th grade, a Native American classmate did the hoop dance for a talent show which was cool! I was surprised that Mr. Blackhawk didn’t mention hoop dances, they’re popular where I live.

Love this. Love this Love this Love this. As a young man in Oregon, I met a dude named Kyle. He was half Lakota half Sioux.

To make a long story short, I assumed he was Latino. Spoke to him in Spanish. He said “Im not a b**ner I dont speak spanish.”

It ended with, “hey man, we’re both native. Only difference is we got screwed by the spanish, and you by the english.”

I pray for the day the American natives of North and South can unite. We’re too few and far apart to ever bicker amongst ourselves.

This was really interesting. As a non American, I always wondered why there is so much support and hype behind the Amerian-African community, but almost nothing behind the people on whose land US is existing. And almost no talk about the genocide of these people.
Also, building something keeping in mind 7th generation is a beautiful and wise approach.

    • @jepalv23

      November 9, 2025 at 5:54 pm

You answered your own question. “As a non American “. That is your perception based on where you are and the content you choose to consume. That would be like me as an American Football fan in the United States wondering why there is so much hype and support around the college football playoffs and almost nothing around the UEFA Champions League (sarcasm) must not be that popular I guess. The point is it has more to do with where I live and what content I consume.

Celilo Falls was a tribal fishing area on the Columbia River, just east of the Cascade Mountains. Celilo was the oldest continuously inhabited community on the North American continent until 1957, when the falls and nearby settlements were submerged by the construction of The Dalles Dam.

It’s a shame that that Mr. Blackhawk seems like he was forced to …*water down* real history in order to preserve delicate sensibilities. Saying, for example, that “lives were destroyed” during the Trail of Tears instead of telling the truth of how men and women, elderly and children were deliberately starved, marched and and frozen to death because the government officials wanted to steal their land.
