Has The U.S. Become A Surveillance State? | Incognito Mode | WIRED

Since the start of the second Trump administration, there’s been open debate about whether the United States is descending into a modern high-tech surveillance state. But is there any truth to that? And what can existing surveillance states tell us about where the U.S. might be along the path? Today WIRED takes a deep dive to determine just that.

    Palantir is watching and listening

If you think they aren’t, just a few years ago we learned the NSA was already doing that with far LESS sophisticated technology, imagine now with AI and the even more centralized data we share.

Not just the us. The us didn’t invest in security infrastructure. So they’re not really any fire walls, or key chains, or anything on the public networks. Plus, they’re are plenty of bad faith actors and good faith actors that know how to utilize what each one knows to do the same thing as each other. So Microsoft leaves a back door, the others know it’s there and to test it. For everyone that provides their own, or another entities, cyber security.

If Americans live in a surveillance state, how is it that there are so many porch pirates with so few getting caught? How do we have so much illegal dumping, illegal public drug use, drug dealing, and vandalism, in addition to more serious crimes, if all the government had to do is identify people with facial recognition and issue arrest warrants? The truth is many people are not honest and trustworthy and need to be watched in public areas where there is no expectation of privacy in order to protect the majority of honest, peaceable citizens and the quality of life in the community. And refusing to implement such tools out of an oversensitivity to privacy rights has a high cost because it means these problems will continue to fester.

I think to be a nation state is to be a surveillance state in some form or fashion or in some circumstances, regardless of era…governments have always had the ability to surveil, and prior to the last couple of decades that surveillance was more targeted and selective

I mean what is it that intelligence agencies do? just look at the NSA and all the other government agencies in the US that can easily surveil and gather information on anyone…

just go back to the origins of policing in the US…we all know why police agencies were initially created, and just look at those same agencies today…

  25. @live_free_or_perish

Calling it a surveillance economy instead of a surveillance state is nonsense. The automatic license plate readers provided by Flock are outsourced, but they’re bought and paid for by the government. Do you think the missiles and bombs made by companies like Honeywell are exempt just because Honeywell isn’t a government agency? Do you think Harris Technologies, maker of the Stingrays the DHS put in the hands of police departments throughout the country are exempt because they’re not a government agency? Just because something is outsourced doesn’t mean it’s not part of a surveillance state. Especially when the state is paying them.
