We test two high-end outdoor cams with bright floodlights to see which one will work better for the exterior of your home.
Both the Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Pro and the Nest Cam with Floodlight have solid specs, including all the basics you might expect. We compare the finer points, then run them through the gamut with vision and alert tests, both during the day and at night.
We also take a look at the wider smart home fit for each, as Ring works better with Alexa and Nest works better with Google Assistant.

You really can’t talk about Google’s new Nest products without mentioning that the app itself has transitioned to Google Home rather than the Nest app, which has left earlier adopters of Nest cameras in limbo. Combined with the cancellation of Nest Secure without replacement, I’m pretty disappointed in Google and won’t be adding any new Nest devices to my home until I have more clarity about the future of the brand.

This is great and all but as someone who has had to replace the bulbs in flood lights, I’d like to know if I can do that myself or do I have to go through the hassle of taking it down and sending it to them for service. Also, if it’s not a standard bulb size, then how much more will that cost me? LED are supposed to last for a long time, but the reality is much different.

They are led and don’t ever need to be replaced. Our rings are two years old now and no issues with the lights going out. I have one that has leaked inside the light but it still works. Going to attempt to get that replaced soon though. We had nest before all the rings and been happier with rings app and products.

On the vision test the thing of value to me was being able. To get a clear picture of the person let’s me real no crook has a name tag pin to the front of his shirt.

I think you’re trying to say that it has no value to you? It is important to have clarity bc if you have video footage of a person but you can’t make out the facial feature then that would make that video pointless. “Hey a human stole something.” Cool. But when you can make out how they look then that has evidentiary value

I have other Nest Camera products and my issues were a lot like the ones you guys are documenting. No notice or late notice. We need the Nest Cam IQ what good is a grainy image of the porch-pirate’s car?

Nest products are fragmentated. Older Nest products won’t work with the Google Home app properly as newer Nest products won’t even work with the Nest app.

Does the Nest have to be mounted on a horizontal surface or could it go under an eve??

The directions show horizontal, but mine is mounted under an eve. The magnet is very strong to hold it in place

Nest with its dangling exposed wire does not seem to be a secure design against, let’s say, uhh, wire cutters? Not everyone will be watching their security cameras all day so one snip and it’s over.

Neither of these are any good for security or theft deterrence. What they ARE good for is seeing who’s outside before you open your door, and that’s about it.

So for someone savvy in home automation systems these cameras are still a big compromised over doing a custom set up with good flood lighting, motion detector and camera. But they are getting better.

If ring would improve video quality to that if nest and add facial recognition it would destroy everything else out there. Love everything about nest but ring is just more reliable security wise

Ring charges per device.. where as Nest is one fee for multiple devices. So, with doorbell, flood light and another camera.. Nest is cheaper.

The biggest drawback is no local storage. With both cameras you have a company in your house watching everything you do so they can track you and just hand off your info and camera to police. You may have to opt in but i know ring allows police to use your camera. So none of these are security cameras. You’re giving up your privacy for “security”
