Fortnite declares war on Apple, Google
Fortnite was kicked out of Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store for adding a direct payment option to in-app purchases of V-BUCKS (Fortnite’s in-game currency). The ban set off a chain of events that included Epic Games suing both companies and releasing a video parody of Apple’s iconic “1984” commercial. #freefortnite #fortnite #cnet

Apple invested millions, if not billions of dollars over the last decade building up their mobile platform. Apple is the one who worked to design, engineer, manufacture, market, and distribute the iPhones and iPads that come with iOS, iPadOS, and the App Store.
Epic games has no right to suddenly barge in and whine about how Apple is being unfair.
Apple did all the leg work building up its mobile platforms, and if epic games wants access to that audience, epic games should follow apple’s rules. Apple gets to determine the rules of their platform. If they don’t allow side-loading of apps, if they want a 30% cut from app developers, it’s Apple’s platform and apple’s rules.

Imagine if instead of a lawsuit epic games just removed apples rights to use unreal engine for any application. Literally a third of all apps on the app store would have to be removed instantly. I think that would send apple a better message than some blanket term lawsuit.

It costs money to keep the app stores on Microsoft, Apple, Google, and even Linux (places like Canonical Ubuntu) to keep the code clean, and to make sure the software in the stores are following the company policies they set forth. Then add on top of that the cost to manage and maintain the servers to host for the users to be able to access the resources. This doesn’t come free, and shouldn’t be expected to be free. Epic isn’t charged to put a free product in the store, which meant they could circumvent the 30% cut for a free product. But then with the back-end money grab they were doing for the in-store purchases, that was the only opportunity Apple had to receive anything to even pay to keep it in the app store. And yet after millions if not billions of downloads of this Fortnite app from the app store, this is the little opportunities Apple has to make sure the code is kept clean and not going to break the system or other apps, as well as following policy, and paying to keep the servers running. I remember the old days of Android, before there was any enforcement of the app store. And it was a wild west, where the average consumer would be full of bugs, and have to resort to antivirus programs and cleaners to just to mitigate some of this stuff… yet those programs themselves were money grabs and their own malware/trojans.
Even Steam and Epic have their own app stores following their own policies and guidelines. So it’s funny how Tim Sweeney is whining about the store policy and the money they have to pay. But do they allow their developers that are in their app store exist for free, or do they themselves take a cut from those developers and publishing companies? I would imagine so.

This is insane. Apple and Google get developers apps in front of people and they should be compensated for it. They built the system, they maintain the system, they make the rules. Don’t like it? Tough. And the hosts argument about YouTube is honestly laughable. Sure, Apple can’t control YouTube, but Google can and Google (for better or worse) does enforce platform guidelines. Apple does the same on the App Store because it’s an Apple platform. So no, Apples argument isn’t shaky. We might disagree and think it’s dumb, but shaky isn’t the word to describe it.

if epic doesn’t like paying companies money that have built a user base that they can use (a user base that would not exist without apple or google) they can make their own mobile platform and see how that works out for them. If they don’t want to make their own mobile platform then why should they expect to be allowed to use a platform for free? for example google takes a 45% cut of add revenue on YouTube no one complains that isn’t fair.

What’s funny is Epic games refuses to let anyone sell in app purchases in their store and they’ve been criticized for it. They don’t care about monopoly but rather just being greedy and want a bigger piece of the pie. Of course why wouldn’t they. They’re a business.

I used to be an Apply fanboy (multiple iphone, ipad, macbook) but moved away the past few years because of shady things like this. I’m disappointed in the way they have done business the past few years, they are the new IBM. What is annoying is that they portray themselves as the angel in the industry. Owning a marketplace and having competing products in the marketplace (Owning App store but also Apple Music competing against Spotify, Apple Game vs. Epic) is too tempting for most business not to abuse eventually and leading to monopolistic behaviors . This remind me of Microsoft behavior during their Anti-trust case. I hope they(Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Google) all get pressured to play by more fair rules.

Apples entire culture has been geared towards creating a walled garden, a captive market, from it’s very inception.
Between their extortionary fees and their fight against right to repair, this sort of rebellion has been a long time coming.
I wish I could say that I could see this going well for the developers, but Apple has also demonstrated that they’re not above bribery via lobbyist and will fight to keep their insane cut of the gaming revenue.
Clinton Andrews
August 16, 2020 at 3:45 pm
I think they should let Apple and google take the 30% and shut up. They want to use their app stores to get their product to the people, that should come at a cost. Imagine an uber driver suing uber because they don’t want uber to take 25% of the fares, that’s ridiculous.

It’s more of extortion attempt than rather a “stand” though , which is why they can’t presented as anything but greed from Epic’s side .
I’d side with Microsoft about the xCloud , but Epic Games purposely violating the terms of their contracts just do they can cry wolf after is some bs crap move and deserve Apple and Google to crash them for that.
