Joe Namath called his win because in order for the AFL to merge and the Super Bowl to be born . So he knew he was going to win . Selling the football as it is today was critical . And a business decision. The hole “sports entertainment” still lingers today .

As someone who has worked for the company that created the yellow line and player/vehicle tracking technology (including GPS for NASCAR), there are several reasons why GPS is not and cannot be used for this purpose and it has been very heavily investigated and suggested many times. GPS is not accurate enough. Stadiums are giant metal bowls where GPS signals bounce around which causes a reduction in accuracy. Some stadiums are domes, others have only small openings to the sky. GPS antenna are fairly bulky and don’t like to be jostled around. It’s fine for single-point and Differential GPS, but RTK mode (which goes down to 2cm accuracy) loses track quite quickly when bounced around and covered by other objects. What IS being used is a LPS or (Local Position System) through RFID by a company called Zebra. Though this is not used for ball placement because the NFL loves tradition and people like the drama of the chain.

I still say that Otto Graham was the best quarterback ever. Ten seasons, ten championship appearances, seven championship wins. He also still holds the career record for yards per attempt, which says he moved the ball more efficiently, despite playing in an era when you could crash a drumptruck into a receiver and not draw a pass interference penalty.

Will punch-drunkenness kill the NFL? There may be fewer kids playing in years to come (both in never being allowed to play due to schools and pee wee leagues discontinuing programs if they become uninsurable, and kids getting weeded out earlier after head injuries) and thus, the quality of the player pool may suffer, and the NFL might, in theory, become on a par with the UFL talentwise and people might start to lose interest.
@0fficerJimLahey

The NFL will never allow VAR or GPS positioning in the ball because they want control when it can go either way. It’s one of the great things about soccer and tennis, there’s no argument. But you can’t gift the chiefs games with VAR

FUN FACT: At 14:42 the player pictured (#24) is Byron “Whizzer” White. Here’s his story, in brief:
He studied law at Oxford University in England after nearly winning the Heisman Trophy at Colorado.
He returned to the US to practice law, but was convinced to play pro football, becoming the highest-paid player in league history – $15,800/year contract!
In his three-year career, he led the league in rushing two times.
He left pro football to serve as an intelligence officer for the Navy in the Pacific during the War.
He returned to Yale Law School after the War and in 1962, President Kennedy appointed him to the Supreme Court

GPS or any satnav would be a poor fit for any sport. Too inaccurate without many redundant receivers in the first place, easy to jam or spoof. The NFL needs a localized system somewhat like LORAN (a predecessor of GPS) but optimized to just cover a playing field.

The only reason the Cowboys still get ratings, is because they are on every single week, and usually the late game or prime time when they’re the only game on. Jerry Jones has WAY to much sway in the NFL. Roger Goodell is a coward and won’t stand up to him.

These are grown men, they can make their own decisions about the danger and the desire to play (ie money). As long as they are deciding while not in a state of mental stress, it should just be their decision. Lots of people have dangerous jobs, but they are filled because of the potential to make more money. No one should be able to tell them they cant play if they choose that for themselves.

I am not a Tom Brady fan but he’s the undisputed GOAT anyway. I know the Patriots had a lot else going for them: exceptional, proven coach in Bill Belichick, a self-improving dynasty that great players wanted to play for, and various cheats and scandals. But when Brady started all over with a new coach and team in Tampa Bay at age 43 and won his 7th Super Bowl, he proved again he’s the GOAT. Payton Manning won 5 rings with two teams. Mahomes needs four rings and one more team, just to tie Tom Brady.

The cowboys are known as Americas team because their quarterback, captain America, was a star player. That’s also why my family is a fan, my great grandfather loved the cowboys after shooting Japanese planes down in WWII.
They also won in the 1995-96 season, which I guess you can call the “early 90s” if you want to be as un-charitable as possible
@geemac7267
February 6, 2025 at 4:50 pm
The NFL doesn’t even talk about GPS technology because they want the unaccountable officials to control the games. Maybe your team has more often than not come out on top of that situation but it’s impossible to argue that having flawed (and sometimes blind) older men making poor calls and even poorer reviews of those calls, is a better way to do it than GPS or any other technology.
@erakfishfishfish
February 6, 2025 at 4:55 pm
I think it’s time to increase the difficulty of field goals again. The success rate of 50+ yarders in the 2024 season was about 75%. That’s double what it was in the 80s. Additionally, 50+ yard attempts are way up compared to the previous few decades. I don’t think a player who’s only on the field for a handful of plays should be that integral to a team’s success.

Hm… Tom Brady threw a pick six and just two touchdowns in Super Bowl 51, while James White tied the all-time scoring record and broke the receptions record (crazy for a running back!). However in that game Brady did achieve the record for the most completed passes in a super bowl, and the record for most yards thrown at the time (he would break it the following year and still lose). Though of course the game going into overtime for the first time ever at the time (only the second one now, but watch it go into OT on Sunday and antiquate my comment lol), did help quite a bit (for Brady and White since White scored his third in OT). It’s a tough choice for sure. But I mean, a pick six feels a little disqualifying right?

I was watching the game with my dad, and he said something like “Welp, this game’s over anyway, let’s get you off to bed.” I apparently whipped my head around and said in a very indignant tone something like, “No dad, the Bills are coming back. THEY are gonna win.” He came and got me out of bed for the final few minutes and we tried our best not to wake the rest of the house with our excitement. He still tells this story whenever he has the opportunity. Been a Buffalo Bills fan ever since.

So a couple things with this video, questions and statements.
1) It’s heavily contested that Americans did not actually invent football, that Canadians did during the 1860’s at McGill and University of Toronto. Is that true? You only ever hear canadians talk about it.
2) What do you think is the superior football, Canadian or American? Take away the money and commercial aspects, how does 3 down football stack up against 4 down football?
3) in the CFL, because of the deeper endzones, our goalposts are at the front of the endzone, similar to what was shown in the video. There is not any significant injuries that occur because of that and doesn’t affect scoring very much. So the whole “it’s for safety” thing is kind of BS.

GPS – Rugby players have a GPS module on the upper part of the back of their shirts…..Not sure how that really helps their game, but hey, they got ’em.

Canadians still have the uprights on the goal line. There should be a video on the history of differences and similarities between the NFL and CFL!

I was hoping he would answer the question “why half the distance to the goal?” It can unfairly advantage a team depending which way the ball is going.

Never done this before, but gotta say, for an “expert” historian, you missed a couple things:
1. Cowboys won in 95-96 (small thing) but wouldn’t be considered (early 90s)
2. I woulda have explained why the “rugby TD” is called a Tri (original rugby “TD” was 3 points), AND you failed to mention on the topic, that players had to physically touch the ball down in the endzone (kinda explains it better), way back when…if you watch Red Grange U of I highlights (particularly that HC game vs Michigan, you can see him consistently touching the ball down)…not to mention the significance of WHERE you touch the ball down in the tri zone is relevant to rugby’s “XP”, but never was for footballs.
Sorry you did a good job and i only have watched 2:54 of this, but had to call that out

When did the NFL stop putting white circles on the ends of the ball and why isn’t the ball 🏈 light brown? When did it change to a very dark ball?

10:37 1937 LA Bulldogs went 16-0 in the AFL
1948 Cleveland Browns went 14-0 in AAFC
The Browns first 12 seasons are actually insane af, especially considering everything their history since 😅
1946-1949 – won 4 straight AAFC championships
1950 – won NFL championship
1951-1953 – lost 3 straight NFL championships
1954-1955 – back-to-back NFL champs
1956 – losing record
1957 – lost NFL championship

If they really wanted to make the game safer, THEY WOULD MAKE THEM WEAR MORE PADDING ! The fact that they don’t, let’s you know they are LYING about safety.
