Interesting. The mega corp in Amazon series “Upload” that uploads human consciousness to a virtual afterlife is coincidently named “Horizen”

I just love how they are all avatars. I wonder if they can choose other nonhuman avatars because I would love my boss to call a meeting as a dragon.

If you don’t have a supported keyboard, you can draw a passthrough box around your keyboard and see the keyboard without the device needing to track it.

this is cool and all but are people really going to wear this thing for an 8 hr work shift and multiple days a week? nausea is pretty common with VR.

I think it’s more about meetings. And what better way to get people to keep their meetings under an hour than to strap a brick to everyone’s face?

You should have attempted to destroy the Zuckerberg avatar while you were in VR. Some tech shamans have said it is the only way to get rid of him in the flesh world and you may never be that close again, Scott.

This is the future. If you’ve ever taken a college class online you know how hard it can be. Commenting in a discussion board and watching a pre-recorded lecture are not the same as “being there”. I think Facebook can succeed if they partner with some really big colleges and trade schools. I am very excited for what this will look like in 5 to 10 years. Awesome.

So if they scan your keyboard and screen, Facebook gonna know all about You, not only what You do in Facebook, also al your paswords, websites You visited, Credit card numbers and a long etc.

Imagine going into a VR meeting, only to do a zoom call with someone.. .. this is just creepy.. vr chat is better.. rather talk to a banana dinosaur version or mark than an avatar were the devs tried to make him look a bit more human.

I’ll have to check this out and see how it compares to the Immersed Virtual Desktop. Being able to size and position 5 virtual screen wherever I want and the KB syncing and hand tracked typing as well a coworking options in Immersed are going to be pretty high bars. Plus I’m interested to see if there are comfort issues I’ve done 10-12 hour sessions in immersed with no issues.

Dang that is all super cool. After almost a decade of working remotely, this would help meetings a lot. I am not a fan of facebook or Zukerberg but this has real potential.
I think the avatar would be better as a cartoon than overly realistic.
All the developers I work with hate video meetings, including myself.

Plus has no one heard of a tablet or app for meetings, and you can’t put a VR HMD into your pocket are brief case. lol

This is easily the dumbest thing Facebook has ever done, and that is saying a lot considering most things they have done were really just very weak and stupid.

$300 VR headsets when I can’t get my company to replace my circa 2016 laptop?

The “transportative” aspect he talks about is true. For people who never experienced dedicated VR (not mobile phone VR or google cardboard), this looks wonky but believe people who have been in VR when we say it really feels so immersive. It puts you in a different headspace, like you’re in a lucid dream or another place. But gosh I was giggling when Zuck was so jittery in VR the guy did that 2:51 thing.

  47. FartyFat

    August 21, 2021 at 8:40 am

if you’re even slightly interested in VR but have no idea where to start, Oculus Quest 2 is the perfect one to begin your VR journey. Its a stand alone VR headset, so you don’t need any PC or tracking station and cables.

Its only $299 for 64 gb version, although its currently unavailable to buy on the website, it will be back at mid October with an upgrade (better foam, and 128 gb storage) with the same $299 price tag.

I usually turn to the HoloLens or desktop for SpatialAR meetings instead of Oculus Quest. The HMD can be a distraction itself for productivity purposes. [Weight and Eye Strain]
