Considering a roach can’t survive bug spray, but I can, I can assume they are just as vulnerable as anything.

    • @KaitouKaiju

      June 3, 2025 at 7:57 pm

To be fair you would probably die if you were covered in it too

    • @verakoo6187

      June 3, 2025 at 8:15 pm

Bit different, that bug spray is specifically designed to kill them.
Nuclear radiation is designed to kill us.

    • @95rav

      June 3, 2025 at 8:17 pm

@KaitouKaiju. to be fair, I can roll around in a bed of daisies all day, but the pyrethrum will kill insects.
That isn’t the point though. Roaches are easily killed – they aren’t somehow invincible. Put one in a microwave and see how it fares – and microwave ovens are a little bit less dangerous than a nuke.

    • @95rav

      June 3, 2025 at 8:21 pm

@@verakoo6187no, most bug sprays are anticholine esterase compounds and will affect our nervous system just as effectively as that in insects.
And nuclear radiation isn’t “designed” for anything at all – it just is. It can actually be beneficial.

In regards to 7:55, there has been recent research that does support mosquitoes being more attracted to certain people than others, but it’s not about blood type. It seems to mostly be about body odour and how much CO2 a person breathes out (and maybe also skin microbiome). People with a higher metabolic rate attract more mosquitoes, which is why often people will notice they’re bitten more after exercising, or while pregnant, or after starting on medications that increase metabolic rate.

I love insects – to look at, not touch. Watching this video made me itchy all over! Does an insectologist not get itchy like me? How/why does that happen, and does it happen to everyone?

I love hissing cockroaches…I did a bachelor’s in Microbiology, and the hissing cockroaches we saw in parasitology/vector biology were the biggest animals I got to see.

When I do fieldwork, gnats spend more time hanging around other people than me. If the other people leave, the gnats bother me more. Greater lactic acid production?

Excellent presentation, dr. Ware is super charming and obviously an expert. also I like that she mentioned the research by Lars Chittka concerning bees. Everyone should read Chittka’s “The Mind of a Bee”. A real eye opening book.

Just to clarify, native bees do not have barbed stingers, so they don’t die after stinging their victims the way honeybee workers do. There are about 4,000 native bee species in the U.S.

Delighted to see some live specimens, especially the Whip Scorpion and the Cockroaches.

The first problem with “A Bug’s Life” is that there are no bugs in the film. Millipedes, moths, grasshoppers, ants, beetles, spiders, and mantids but no bugs. Perhaps there’s one in the City scene but it’s hardly enough to justify the title.

By the way, that windshield question is a phenomenally great way to show people who do not understand climate change and how ecosystems are affected by it. At the very least, people understand ecosystems. They understand that all the bugs dying is bad. I’ve seen that light in people’s eyes when they make the connection between those things. I’ve seen then begin to understand the problems in nature.Just a little bit better. In my opinion, you should be asking this question as just an interesting little factoid all the time.

I used to say that I hate bugs but honestly I find what bothers me is the sensation of them touching me if I’m not ready for it I actually think they’re fascinating and I respect their place in nature I just prefer to keep their nature out of my house too which is never fun when you have pests

  44. @katherinerichardson2273

    June 4, 2025 at 7:06 pm

it depends on how you define the word dangerous animal because mosquitoes kill the most people

  45. @CelAbration

    June 4, 2025 at 7:08 pm

I loved bugs as a kid and still do as an adult. They have entire worlds adjacent to ours, or they did. I hope they’ll make it through our shenanigans

A thought on the car windshield thing: Cars are a lot more aerodynamic than they used to be. That probably saves a lot of bugs by swooping them over the car instead of right into the windshield. My primary vehicle is a ’70s car, and whenever I go on highway trips, the windshield and front end are littered with bugs in less than half an hour.

I appreciate that at least mosquitos try to be painless while they steal our blood and give us any number of diseases. Horseflies, meanwhile, are tiny angry gremlins that you feel immediately but it doesn’t even matter because so many of them are swarming and trying to eat you that you don’t even have a chance to swat any individual. Really wish our morals as a species would stop protecting some super annoying and downright deadly creatures. Like we can systematically kill millions of animals for food with little to no care but the moment you suggest wiping out an entire species of parasitic disease carrying pests and suddenly everyone cares about the ecosystem 😭

Whipspiders’ whips are extremely sensitive with a huge number of nerve endings. They don’t use them for pushing prey toward them, they use them like a feeling pair of eyes. Whipspiders can even recognize individuals of their own species and remember their way through mazes because they’re so intricately aware of the world around them through their whips. Amblypigi are really fascinating

As a tarantula keeper I am cringing so hard at that tarantula on the mesh. Recipe for disaster.
Tarantulas have little “paws” that can cause them to get stuck and rip legs off. Very dangerous.
Also not all tarantulas have urticating hairs, only new world species have urticating hairs. Old world species have more potent venom to make up for not having that form of defense.

  174. @ozaruspersona1631

    June 10, 2025 at 1:06 am

Okay i have to add my two cents. “Why is everyone afraid of tarantuals?” Is such a blantly weird question. Imahine if I told you your paralysis demon had 8 legs andany eyes that starwd back at you. You’d think that’s creepy. Tarantuals are walking nightmare fuel. And they make no noise. You’re minding your business then you see a giant furry thing with legs out of the corner of your eye.

Now with that being said, I don’t understand why people are scared of snakes orher than a possible religious upbringing. But snakes are actually cute without this weird, surreal eldrich horror face that a tarantual gives you.

  199. @uhljebatur

    June 12, 2025 at 4:20 am

22:02 completly wrong? First time i hear this.
The bugs are big as the amout of oxygen in the air cause they “breath” with their bodies, exoskeleton. So the more oxygen is in the air, the bigger the bug.
When the dragonflies were masive there was crazy amount of oxygen in air, smthing like 70%, unlike today’s 20%. That means they got bigger or smaller cause of oxygen.
Meanwhile she says it is cause to fly faster and better due to predation risk. That is wrong and child could give me that answer.
