4:56 I’m glad she pointed out what a bad teacher Fletcher in Whiplash is. He has exactly one method of teaching and uses it on every member of the band. If he were better, he would recognize which musician to push to their limit and which to encourage.

All us classical musicians in the comments TRULY appreciate this fantastic woman and her speaking out against the mystification of classical music. The scene in Amadeus where Salieri gets confused by basic musical concepts always annoyed me. Mozart “being a genius” doesn’t mean he was the greatest innovator, before his time or a misunderstood artist. So often mainstream media loves to tell us THAT Mozart is great, THAT Shakespeare is great. But these movies seeem uninterested in WHY we should consider them great (or in some cases NOT great). They sell people a vague fantasy of art and make it seem incomprehensible to all but the maddest of geniuses. When really if they would just expose the audience to the art itself and teach them to interact with it, to love it. Then everyone could make their own choice on whether they personally consider Mozart to in fact be “great”. Consider: after viewing Amadeus, how very much could you tell me about the person that is Mozart, and yet how little would you have to say about his music?

I freaking love Marin. I was actually in a youth orchestra about 30 years ago where she and Paavo Jarvi auditioned to be our conductor (obviously before they both hit it big). Paavo won the audition but I really enjoyed her conducting (she definitely had my vote!). It was an incredible privilege having worked with her albeit briefly. So glad she went on to have so much success.

Alsop led a conductor workshop at my conservatory. She brings a lot of power to the podium, and that gave some amount of fear, but she’s a lot like this. Very intelligent, but especially intense listening. It’s great everyone gets a chance to see how wonderful she is.

4:19 you know, I always thought “I don’t understand” meant “I don’t think that sounds good, what are you thinking?”, haha…whether because it sounded too simple, not good enough, etc, he doesn’t understand why a genius would want to do whatever Mozart asked him to do…and then when he ponders it internally he suddenly “gets it”, he sees why Mozart wanted it the way he wanted…I never thought of it as a matter of Salieri not understanding what musical instructions Mozart was giving him…

You can really tell those trombones are new because their slides are barely moving (in Practice). The Whiplash part gave me some bad flashbacks to high school. I really appreciated Marin’s breakdowns (although I’ve definitely had band directors that were basically Mr. Holland and didn’t do a lot of emotive conducting)

Lol. While I was in a professional ballet company, we took Nutcracker on tour. During a performance, the local orchestra skipped, SKIPPED, the opening of Waltz of the Flowers. We all stampeded onto stage, desperately trying to catch up to the music. After our ballet master finished screaming at the conductor post performance, Mr. Conductor said they didn’t have a harpist so, instead of subbing with a piano or flute or anything else like a normal person or even letting us know what he planned, he just decided it wasn’t really necessary. I can’t imagine what the audience thought of that fiasco.

Unless the film is being played backwards here, why is Richard Dreyfus (Mr. Holland) holding the baton in his LEFT hand? “Whiplash” was probably the most unreal portrait of a music school that I’ve ever seen (I walked out of the theater before the movie ended). If even a hint of that kind of abuse were to happen in a prestigious music school, that teacher would be fired within a week, no matter how well-known he had been as a professional musician.

There are SOME high schools that have extremely high quality musicians, like the Japanese schools, Texas, Avon HS in Indiana, etc. But they are not the norm.

Violinist here, when she said they’re playing the Dvorak serenade she’s wrong. The 1st violin bowings are ALL wrong in the first clip. The only way they can actually be playing it is if the first violins are sitting in an unorthodox position and are not in the shot.

She knew a lot about the movies in general to give the clips context. Did you make her watch the whole movies, did you provide the context or did she happen to know the movies beforehand?

I was in high school band, and I can confirm her point on the first clip. We were trash, and we played popular music, like Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter scores. We had a huge woodwind section (probably 30-40 people), a tiny tiny brass section (of ~6 people, including myself lol; 4 of them were trumpets), two percussionists, and ZERO strings. It was honestly probably really awful.
Edit: I hadn’t seen the Whiplash clip when I wrote the stuff before. My high school band instructor definitely ripped a phone off the wall and threw it across the room, once. I remember him throwing a chair. I saw him snap several conducting batons in half (they’re like 70$). At the time, I was like ‘that’s hilarious’ (wasn’t ever directed at me. It was always directed at the clarinets). Now, as an adult, I’m like ‘Wow that was inappropriate. We were kids.’

She is one of the great ones for sure. She rebuilt the Colorado Symphony Orchestra after a disastrous reorganization, and made it the best in the region. I can still remember watching her lead a flawless Mahler Seventh shortly before she moved on to the Baltimore Symphony.
She’s absolutely right about enthusiasm being the essential quality of a conductor.

You forgot to include a movie by great polish director Andrzej Wajda called “Dyrygent” (The Conductor). Starring John Gielgud. It is a great exploration of conductors psyche and shows different approach to the art of conducting. Highly recommended.

I think a lot of people learn out of fear, but the love is not in it anymore. Eventually they develope a passion – or not.
There are countless people on Earth, who were forced to learn an instrument, when they were young.
It might have paid off, but the approach is questionable nontheless. I appreciate great classical musicians though.

As much as I admire Maestro Alsop and most of this video, her take on Fellini’s Orchestra Rehearsal I think is misplaced. Afterall, it is a Fellini film, and nothing in a Fellini film during the 70’s (or 60’s for that matter) should be taken literally.

She didn’t cover Victor Borge. Where conducting an orchestra he improbably has one of those spindly folding music stands. You know. The type made of all the little metal slats that stick out all over the place (I always hated those). At one point he is fumbling with the score, he takes pages and skewers them on those protruding metal stick shapes of the music stand. I suspect that most conductors seldom do this.

She mentions “…when the conductor reprimands you with their face…”. Way back I was in an excellent high school orchestra (ALL effort was on performance quality and none on teaching music theory – that school does things differently now) and the conductor had EXTREMELY thick glasses. You could not tell where he was looking. Yet it always seemed like he was looking at you. Just about everybody in the orchestra felt the same way.

“This is way way beyond what a high school orchestra could possibly play.” You should see my high-school’s Chamber strings Orchestra. I would say we played very well, and around 1/4 of the students in the orchestra auditioned and got into the ILMEA. It was a blast playing with them my senior year of high-school

Very nice feature. I do wish she’d included the Rite of Spring film based on the original production. Apparently there were some copyright issues with showing the ballet uninterrupted, so there were a lot of cuts to Pierre Monteux staying calm in the middle of the pit.

For what it’s worth, in my years of student groups I’ve only seen things thrown at the musicians a couple of times – one target was a percussionist who was routinely showing up late and still couldn’t play his part, and one was a trumpeter who was consistently screwing up the rest of the section on a crucial line that we’d spent weeks of rehearsal time trying to get right.

I have a vivid memory of our gospel choir conductor, who somehow managed to conduct and simultaneously accompany us on piano, while rocking a fairly new born baby on one arm. All with great enthusiasm. She must have been an octopus!

Shout out to my high school coach for teaching the choir members how to conduct properly. We all realized that conducting wasn’t just about moving your hands to the beat but also helping the choir “how” to sing. It was so hard to learn especially since I also wasn’t musically talented but props to all the amazing conductors out there giving life to the musicians for every performances! <3

It really says great things about Marin’s style of conducing and dealing with the orchestra that her favorite clips are of Sister Act and School of Rock because of their conductors’ enthusiasm for the music and positive relationship with their musicians.

Don’t know if I can find the clip. My dad used to play clarinet and he was in awe of Benny Goodman. Dad often mentioned Goodman’s “gimlet” eye if you messed up in his band. I saw it once, I think it was a movie about Mr. Goodman. Might be interesting to have a similar video on the jazz bands.

Leonard Bernstein used to do encores where he conducted with his eyebrows. A bit of a stunt, but the orchestra was so well-rehearsed and in tune with him that they understood this “shorthand”.

i absolutely loved this, as a movies lover and a classical music enthusiast. i found this lady to be very nice, aknowledged and i would love love love to see more videos of her reactions and explanations. for example, i demand a video where she showes us some basics of conducting techniques, such as for example how you communicate feelings and the mood of the piece to your orchestra.

Most of this is great, but I disagree somewhat with her analysis of Mr. Holland’s Opus. Richard Dreyfuss conducted exactly as many high school band directors do. High school band teachers often don’t have extensive training in conducting and they tend to keep an ultra-clear and uncomplicated beat pattern so their students, who are mostly beginners, can follow them. To me he looked a lot more natural in the role than most actors who play conductors.
(Full disclosure, I am not a conductor myself, but I am a professional classical violinist who has played under many conductors over the past 30 years and I also studied conducting in my degree program.)
Side note, I love Mozart in the Jungle but the “conducting” on that show is awful!
All in all, it was wonderful to hear Maestra Allsop’s insights and to see these fun clips.

I love this series and just wanted to say that the choice of Marin for the orchestral world commentary was PERFECT!! I have had the pleasure of playing for her twice. Not only is she obviously immensely talented she obviously has a way with words and I could listen to her descriptions of music all day! I love the way she described the “Maestro as mythical creature” in the Mozart in the Jungle clip. 🤣 She doesn’t lead that way and of course it has served her quite well as you can see by her amazing career. Please do more of these.

The Mozart in the jungle scene doesn’t seem like a real dance performance. But it does seem like a choreographer who has a background in conducting and who understands the music. Who has discussed an idea he has about a dance he wants to do. And then tries it out with professional dancers who are allowed to improvise a lot. I
would totally see this happening for some choreographers who are stuck with an idea for maybe a video clip. Or maybe a group of students who for an assignment make a video clip on Mozart.

As a music major, and piano player for the past 40+ years, I loved hearing her take on the conductor’s role. She had the restrained passion you see in the top conductors. You ha e to let it all out but maintain control and not everyone feels the passion in some of these pieces.

Lol. While I was in a professional ballet company, we took Nutcracker on tour. During a performance, the local orchestra skipped, SKIPPED, the opening of Waltz of the Flowers. We all stampeded onto stage, desperately trying to catch up to the music. After our ballet master finished screaming at the conductor post performance, Mr. Conductor said they didn’t have a harpist so, instead of subbing with a piano or flute or anything else like a normal person or even letting us know what he planned, he just decided it wasn’t really necessary. I can’t imagine what the audience thought of that fiasco.

I saw Marin conduct several times here in Brazil, back when she was Osesp’s Conductor. The time that struck me the most was when she conducted pictures at an exibithion, Mussorgsky. I sat behind the orchestra, in the choir, so i saw her every move, and her facial expressions and the passionate way she conducted really were something!
