The only thing I take issue with this otherwise good video is that bad software (in reference to “why does restarting fix things?”) can put the computer in a bad state.
All of the examples shared were based on the USER doing something wrong, when let’s be real, writing bad software is ALSO to blame.

He didn’t really answer the hunk of metal question.
The answer is there are these things called logic gates. Which take multiple inputs of electricity (2 wires) and produce an output of electricity (3rd wire).
An AND gate produces electricity in its output when BOTH of its inputs have electricity running through them
An OR gate produces electricity in its output when EITHER ONE of its inputs have electricity running through them
Logic gates are the building blocks of computers.
The logic gates themselves are made with transistors.

Cosmic rays affecting memory is a reason for the reboot. An application closing and restarting should fix bugs. If it’s a one off that never happened before and doesn’t happen again, it’s cosmic rays apparently.

This guy does a great job not only explaining things in an understandable way, BUT doing so in a positive and neutral way. And I think that positivity is the most important thing. Ie., someone could explain these topics in a way that’s easy to understand but with a negative tone (starting flame war RE: best OS, etc.). This guy is great.

The first question about why search engines are fast might have been misunderstood. Yes, there is the cloud computing aspect to how Google can handle so many requests simultaneously. However, there is also the question of “how can a machine, even a distributed network of machines, search through so much data (i.e. basically Google’s index of the whole internet) so quickly”?
The answer is a Trie data structure. It takes a query that could have a Big-Oh complexity O(N*L) where N is the number of items being searching and L is the length of the query (i.e. the text being searched) and makes it an O(L) query, meaning the amount of data in the index doesn’t really impact the runtime of the algorithm. Very, very nifty.

The idea of computer science really is the combination of mathematics and logic to create automated systems with computers to solve problems. A typical kind of problem that a computer scientist would need to solve is how to identify, keep track of, and search through a massive list of items in a database. We would use code to tell the computer what the system we designed is, but the real skill is knowing how to design a good system in the first place.

The simplest way to understand binary is to analogize it to short-form texting. “Just kidding” can be understood by saying “jk”, just like a certain number or letter or words can be understood by a computer as a string of 0s and 1s. One critical thing to understand about this is that every single modern computer is designed to understand a string of 0s and 1s as the same value as every other computer, known as the ASCII system, or Unicode these days.

Search results input are not executed precisely as he says. It is a state machine, and you are talking to one instance of that machine, that is why it can guess what you type. It is trivial to build a state machine that can take for example a million most likely query strings, predict what you are typing, and start working. It helps the later query distribution, as well as indexing of data. So first the state machine, then the query

The thing I don’t understand about AI is why we should even use them to write code in a high level language.
The reason high level languages like C exist is to make programming easier for humans.
An AI could probably deal with barebone assembly and write smaller, faster programs.
Using an AI to write Python is like giving your industrial machinery lunch breaks.

Taking CS50— the course Malan is famous for developing— in person was a really cool experience. It’s Harvard’s introduction to computer science targeted at people who didn’t start college intending to be come concentrate on computer science. The beautiful Victorian-era Sanders Theater with hand-carved trim (the cafetiera in the same room was the inspiration for Harry Potter’s Great Hall) filled with the energy of a modern high-budget stage production, and Malan is just a phenomenal lecturer. It’s all on YouTube (just search for CS50) if you’re looking for an absolute beginner’s intro to computer science. If you want to take it in person but aren’t a Harvard undergrad, (I wasn’t) you can enroll through Harvard Extension School and pay per credit. Haven’t priced them out in 4 or 5 years, but their courses were actually pretty affordable compared to most private colleges— competitive with state schools.

Ya know, almost no one is actually wondering how a search engine “works so fast” because 1. Most people don’t think about how anything works at all and 2, they don’t know or care about what all is involved in a web search.

I wish my CS professors were so energetic and be able to explain things so well. In one class I asked a question and the professor said “What do you mean what is a parameter?” “uh…. exactly what I said, what does it mean and how does the program respond or interact with it?”

The best CS teacher in the world, when I took his course, there was a saying, if he has a class full of monkeys, those monkeys will start to code. This was so true as this monkey started to code and has been coding since 2017

4:00 “Anyone can learn coding” is a gross oversimplification there. Sure, any fool can string a bunch of PRINTs and GOTOs together to make the computer write “PEEPEE POOPOO” an infinite number of times. (Admit it, if you’re working in the IT industry, you did that once as a kid.) Amusing as that is, you probably don’t want that same fool to write the software that handles things like your credit card payments or cell phone traffic. Non-trivial applications require that you understand not only _how_ to code, but _why_ to code and what is the _best way_ to code a program for solving a particular problem. Plus the necessity of keeping in mind things like exception handling, input checking, cybersecurity, time complexity and scalability, and so on and so forth. Because you _really_ don’t want to find out some random stranger found a way to deposit minus three hundred dollars to your account.

Distributed databases is not the only reason search engines are so fast. Data caching, indexing, categorizing of data and servers. If you search for cats, the system doesn’t have to query the data again it’s already constructed the results.
