The people of Palau — a pristine ocean state made up of more than 300 islands in the western Pacific — warmly welcome travelers to their home every year. But the guests don’t always know how to protect the country’s beautiful beaches and coral atolls. Enter the Palau Pledge: an environmental pledge that’s now part of visitors’ visas, where they promise to “tread lightly, act kindly and explore mindfully” — while respecting the country’s culture and heritage. (Thanks to Jennifer Koskelin-Gibbons and Susan Kloulechad)

The message is so simple yet powerful! If this would spread everywhere (even at a fraction of volume and impact) we would certainly go in the right direction.

Amazing idea, and a nice memory in the passport! We need to solve our environmental issues and help to preserve Palau and many other countries, as much as mine: Brazil. 🇧🇷🤝🏻🇵🇼

“We don‘t inherit from our ancestors, we borrow from our children.”
    This sentence is very wise!

    I like the shown concept!

That’s the only kind of footprint there is.

There are more damaging and lasting footprints, sadly

    • Brian McInnis

      January 24, 2022 at 11:18 pm

@Criss~ All footprints literal and metaphorical will wash away, however long they last.

    • Criss~

      January 24, 2022 at 11:53 pm

@Brian McInnis well, animal extinction caused by humans is a footprint that will never wash away, the fact will always remain there. And of course, we should want to leave only fast erasable footprints.

Dopey message when your entire economy is tourism and US financial assistance. Without fossil fuels Palau would be essentially broke. You didn’t solve a problem with your pledge you just shifted blame.

More climate change bs. So, how about some evidence? Show us all evidence of where the tide lines were 100 – 50 yrs ago as compared to today? And explain what happens if sea levels slowly rise? I’ll tell you what, coral grows and creates new, higher reefs, and islands grow. Wind, water and plants continue to deposit soil and islands continue to grow!

My husband and I visited the beautiful country of Palau in 2006. It was a once in a lifetime experience. Beautiful country filled with friendly, beautiful people. We must all take this pledge and do our part. We only have one world. Let’s save it for our children.

    Well,
I’ve seen enough plastic that these people use. In boats, with glasses, and in diving suits.
They personally support the factories that produce this plastic. They drive boats that consume fuel and dump waste.

    • fiveoctaves

      January 30, 2022 at 7:31 am

But they recycle them. Meanwhile, plastics from other countries litter Palau’s beaches and the locals have to clean up the rest of the world’s mess.
