“Only a bot would play that!” Sacrificing a Queen in chess is a move you’re much more likely to see a bot make as opposed to a human, as humans want to protect the game’s most valuable piece. In the wake of the recent chess cheating scandal, Levy Rozman from GothamChess explains how you actually cheat at chess. Using artificial intelligence, see how people use everything from bathroom cell phones to ear pieces to try to skirt the rules and gain an edge.

@Michael Parham yes, a computer wouldn’t play moves just to bait the opponent, he plays only moves that are perfect and even if the opponent doesn’t fall for the bait, the computer still has a better position. But you can’t beat a computer by just playing illogical moves because it will always find the best response and your position will be even worse if you play bad moves

    November 29, 2022 at 12:46 am

Having watched a lot of Levy’s videos and the moves he calls “bot moves,” I’m kind of surprised that he considered the combination shown at 8:34 a bot move. I wouldn’t have found the knight move to make the king retreat, but once it was on the board, I saw the queen sac instantly. And I’m only ~800 elo. That’s not to flex, that’s just to say that I really think there could have been better examples of “bot moves” than a 1400 Tactics Puzzle.

I’m not a chess expert by any stretch of the imagination, but it seems to me that someone who _is_ and expert might be able to see that future outcome at the end as easily as the AI did.
But maybe I’m underestimating the number of possible branching outcomes between sacrificing the queen and check mate.

If it was a 12 move mate, they’re cheating or a GM. If they find either a 5 or 7 move mate, then they’re aren’t half bad, but they aren’t cheating. And believe me accuracy is not that relevant as long as the opponent as bad. And if it’s short? Even higher accuracy. 85-90% accuracy isn’t hard against an average opponent, if you’re semi-competent competition player. And for example, even move times aren’t that helpful. If you recall, if they’re playing online, moving things, then clicking confirm, or just moving on an unresponsive iPad? They aren’t cheating. But I concede, yes most players with all those issues, then they are cheating. Or a mid rate GM.

  23. miKey mouSe

    November 29, 2022 at 9:05 pm

Maybe the only way to PROVE that an online player is cheating (by using an AI chess program) is to :
    a) pick the most likely AI programs that they would use…
    b) input each of the player’s moves into each of the chess programs…
    c) if the AI program’s output moves match the player’s move, move for move, throughout the whole game, …
… then OK, the player cheated!
However, an easy way to defeat that check would be for the player to have several AI programs running, input the opponent’s move into each of them, then choose one of the AI program’s output move (choose a program at random). Oh yeah, and have a random time delay timer to vary your ‘move speed’, to make you look ‘more human’.
That shouldn’t be too hard to program, and would defeat the ‘move sequence’ check described above.
Actually, now that I think about it, that could be interesting to try out – see what sort of game you would get playing a ‘bot’ or person (for FUN, of course) as an experiment. 🙂

there’s a video of a dude making such a vibrating device and then demonstrating that in its silicon casing it wouldn’t be detected by metal detectors. now you might ask, how can a vibrator tell you what move to play? it’s like morse code. 1 vibration means one thing, 2 vibrations mean a second thing, etc. but they can be programmed and designed to be as complex and easy to use as you need them to be while being easy to conceal on (or in…) your body.

People play counter-intuitive moves too, sometimes! A stronger indication for foul play is when the same amount of time is spent on every single move, like a metronome. Then you get beaten, not by a honest human who thinks for himself, but by a computer.

So many people in the comments underestimate the position.
It’s not even close to mate if you don’t take the queen.
It takes 35+ moves for stockfish 15 to force mate.

  44. What do I name this channel

    November 30, 2022 at 1:17 am

‘No human in history has ever played a sequence of moves like that’

  46. Simbacaned Guy

    November 30, 2022 at 11:48 pm

The cheating example wasn’t great. Since the queen was under threat, and there was an obvious x-ray of the rook on the king, the position would play itself for anyone rated over 2000 uscf. However, a better example would’ve been if the queen hadn’t been under attack by the b-pawn (which we will say is on b7 defending the knight), and the king was already on g8. This is because Qd5 would still be the second best move. This may seem obvious to begginers because if the pawn takes you checkmate, so it must be good. However, chess isn’t that simple. The opponent doesn’t have to take and this is where the human would have to think “How do I justify this move if my opponent doesn’t take the queen” It is very difficult to justify this, with possibly the only reason being “I want to centralise my queen”. But with lots of other principles running around a humans head, such as “Always retreat” it would be extremely difficult for many humans to justify Qd5 over retreating the queen. A computer, however, would calculate the line 30 moves deep and play it anyway. This is the position I am talking about, btw . Qd5 here is the second strongest move, but for a human to justify is tough. I guess the idea is Qd5, Qd6, Qf8#. But black is in time with h6, f5. Very difficult to justify Qd5 here, not so much in the position you showed.

  47. Niels Harksen

    November 30, 2022 at 11:52 pm

The queen sacrifice is not that hard to find for a strong player. I am sure the world elite would find this moves in under a minute. If you are playing rapid against a 1200 though and they make this move though….

  48. Levent Çelik

    November 30, 2022 at 11:54 pm

Hikaru mentioned that you can cheat by simply relating a single beep.

Beep means there’s an important move to pay attention. If you know a move exists, you try hard to find it.

No beep means the moves are not hard to find. You don’t lose time.

  49. Uncle Willibomb

    November 30, 2022 at 11:56 pm

The first example was actually pretty easy to spot, you’re queen is being attacked so you’re looking for a square to escape to and naturally you would find d5 as the best move.

I have an 80% rapid win rate but that’s because I’ve only played 90 games and I’m nowhere near my true rating. For blitz, it’s 56% after 650 games and I’m 2000 so yeah. High win rates can be indicative of cheating but not every single time.

I agree that the example of a “bot move” was rather poor. However I understand that this is for general audiences and “bots will play seemingly nonsensical moves to save a tempo eight moves later” and “bots will sacrifice three points of material to gain three-point-two points of positional advantage” will simply not make sense to many viewers without unwarrantedly-long explanation.

  54. Emma

    December 1, 2022 at 12:28 am

I love sacrificing my queen. Leveraging the ‘value’ of chess pieces to ‘trick’ an opponent to drop their guard or to have them assume that you made a blunder or have them take the queen to gain control, however they allow me an advantage over the board or a region of the board.

    December 1, 2022 at 1:29 am

Everything he said is 100% true, I just wish they’d used a better example for the “sacrifice’ than the Ng5+ into bishop mate. I mean that’s a 2-move forced checkmate if black plays Kg8 which I would not say was insane. If instead you take the knight as fxg5 then you just get fxg5+ which forces Qf6 into a pin. No matter what that Ng5+ move is super strong. I mean it’s pretty likely the dude was cheating but I wouldn’t say that sacrifice was really a clear cut cheating example.

If I made a chess AI or a cheat myself I could understand but cheating just to get a win just doesn’t make sense to me. 98. Roman

    December 2, 2022 at 5:42 pm

I think many grandmasters would find that sequence and queen sacrifice, not because they “see the future” but because they understand concepts and thus would notice that the king is vulnerable and consequently look for tactics to take advantage of vulnerabilities. The queen sacrifice here is a low to medium difficulty chess puzzle.

The online portion allegations are very vague and can and do happen by real people. It’s part of the reason cheating online is so rampant as well because tbh a human can totally pull off a winning streak, be disciplined enough to think consistent time each move and if his opponent plays weak moves obvious to exploit and/or has good opening prep a consistent high accuracy isn’t to uncommon either. Don’t get me wrong someone U2000 achieving all this is sus but plenty people can do everything he said.

If black had just resisted the urge to take the queen, white would have to attack the pawn at e6 to put the king in check, and black could take the queen with the bishop at c3. I’m not good at chess, so maybe I’m missing something, but I feel like this more shows that black isn’t good at chess as opposed to showing that white is an AI.

White could also have sacrificed the bishop at e4 rather than the queen to the same end, and it looks more obvious and less suspicious, since the queen is already in line to put the king in check with the black pawn at e6 out of the way.

Another point. Queen retreating to C1 ends up forcing a queen trade where the black queen takes it at C1 and the rook takes the black queen. While it’s a “fair trade,” it’s not obviously a good outcome unless you have a plan going several moves even past that. That’s complex enough to think about that considering other lines is worth it, which I think would make queen d5 more appealing.

  123. Kimbo Appleby

    December 3, 2022 at 3:19 pm

Theres an option on one of the chess app to have this option as it teaches you the moves, however your literally playing against another ai

  124. Nathan Cohen

    December 3, 2022 at 3:48 pm

That Queen sacrifice into double Bishop mate is really not as suspicious as this video is making it out, imo. It’s a mate in 2, which is a pretty common thing if you do a lot of puzzles. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see a puzzle like that.
The Knight play is a little iffy, but it seems really hard to say that’s definitely a cheater off of just those couple of plays.

    • Timo

      December 4, 2022 at 12:20 am

The queensac complaining has overblown in the comments. The move is HARD to find:

First the video shows queensac, its findable.
Then the video shows that it starts with a knight sacrifice, which means you have to consider two obscure moves ahead.
The move is still findable, especially in a puzzle scenario where you know there is an answer but if you add everything together (player has 100% winrate, has account for under week, 90+% accuracy every game…) you can safely say you either play against genious which is unlikely, a smurf which is unfortunate or a cheater which is the most likely case.

(Oh and I agree about the part where most suspicious moves on high ranks are the weird moves where you just move a safe piece to WORSE position seemingly wasting a move but its actually best move because it prevents something happening in 5 moves. Problem is that those moves aren’t suspicious on lower ranks because players just don’t know what to do and decide to move a piece for no reason all the time, making it difficult to spot cheaters)

Lots of stuff here makes sense but I reject the idea that such sacrifices are automatically suspicious. I mean, people can feel that way if they want, but it doesn’t mean it’s correct. I play like that all the time as a point of being creative and seeing what is possible. People need to be careful with such assumptions because that can hurt the game as much as cheating can.

and without the plan of the queen the knight check is just plain stupid.

I disagree. In the move that he deemed suspicious sacrificing the Queen is really not all that suspicious if you know you can end the game in one move after that. I’ve made plenty of moves like that and never even played online or knew about cheating software

0:05 That’s the kind of move I’d make. Not because I’m some sort of genius on the level of AIs but because I’m too focused on another part of the board to see the pawn 🥲.

Honestly, the example is only suspicious if the white player had to think every move. If they moved the Knight and then played the forced checkmate instantly, then it is not suspicious. I could believe a human could find that checkmate

I’m not a good chess player, but honestly, that first move seemed like a pretty obvious queen sacrifice to me.

I get that he dumbed this down for non chess audiences. In reality many intermediate players at the club level are capable of playing moves that sacrifice material to access the king. Or move a piece to an “unprotected” square because taking is bad. We play long games at a board with time to think. Not 3 minute games on our phones on the toilet.

Out of curiosity, what if there was someone who was both a chess prodigy as well as possessing an eidetic (photographic) memory? If that person would review hundreds of games a day, he would essentially have the same memory functionality as a bot. This would be an interesting challenge to the scientific community.

What I do find funny is people keep saying play puzzles and learn all these tricky moves and sacs but if a player does that in game he is a cheat ..lol.
If I was suspicious I would look first at multiple insane moves not just one or two and auto think player is cheating because that is imo lame and WRONG and it does not mater what that move or two was because it can simply happen.
Now if a plyer makes 5 questionable insane moves in a row then certainly the red flags come up.
However I was watching a GM lose over and over to another IM and he was 100% certain the IM was cheating so he did the profile look and studied every game.Well he was WRONG and realized it then I am sure felt stupid because his opponent was making weak plays often there were just some really good plays as well that frustrated the GM.
To me that is ego busting GM’s hate to lose.
Now if we are going to suspect that a lot cheat guess what you better start at the top because when comes to fame and fortune you can bet cheating is right close behind.

I’m just a noob at chess, but isn’t the goal to capture the king? Sure sacrificing the queen is a bad move, but if it leads to the win why wouldn’t a grand master do that move? Also, what happens when someone like Carlsen starts to study AI moves, wouldn’t he be able to outthink others and seemingly look like AI is playing? In e-sports (either Dota or LoL) for years it was considered a bad way to train if you played against bots. But then someone managed to create a bot that started to do some weird plays that the human player could not beat. And soon after that, every major e-sport team was training against bots to get better. AI literally created a play where 1 character pushes hard and when health drops to under 40% he would start to run away knowing that the human player would chase him. And then the human player runs into AI’s trap.

You’re right. A lot of chess exercises are specifically queen sacrifices. And the example shown is a moderately difficult one at best. Levy Rozman is good at chess, but he’s also full of crap.

The first 30 seconds is just dumb lol. Maybe in low time controls they wouldn’t do that, but even in rapid they’d have time to think and realize that’s a pretty obvious mating sequence.

While no human has played that exact sequence, I’d not be surprised if Mikhail Tal had come close, with some pretty similar stuff. But I’m not really a profound chess connoisseur to say for sure, maybe actual chess experts can clearly kind of draw a line between things Tal would do and things only engines would. The only thing I can sort of guess would that the engines would kind of out-Tal Tal, with the human Tal sequences probably not even scoring as high in the engine evaluation, where they’d perhaps come up with something even weirder/bolder (or rather more conventional, tame/human-like, possibly, at times. Sometimes some moves have a psychological effect of seemingly posing a great threat/surprise when there’s some defense that’s available, but neglected, not being as obvious as it would be to an engine or even to someone playing more calmly).
