Chemist Answers Chemistry Questions From Twitter | Tech Support | WIRED
Scientist and author Kate Biberdorf (perhaps better known as Kate The Chemist), answers the internet’s burning questions about chemistry. Why does Diet Coke and Mentos make a chemical reaction? Do brains really have chemicals inside them? What do electrolytes even do? Kate answers all these questions and much more! Still haven’t subscribed to WIRED on…

First question is wrong.
Our universe has a lot of empty space where literally nothing is there, not even atoms.
But what is universal is physics.
So is the universe all chemistry? No.
Is all of the universe physics? Yes.

As a chemist, this was a very difficult video to watch. All answers were based on high school chemistry knowledge. Do Americans skip their chemistry classes?
Also, the lava lamp answer was wrong. They are composed of wax (solid at room temp and liquid when heated), kerosene, polyethylene glycol and water. The movement is only possible because of a heat source.
Regarding everything being made of chemicals (matter), possibly only 15% of the universe is chemistry. The rest is dark matter and we still lack the knowledge to explain it.

She also replied wrongly to a question. The person said “if atoms are mostly empty, why can’t we pass our hands through materials”. She replied about the nuclei being dense so we can never touch the nuclei. She didn’t answer at all.

At 1:57 she taps the table and the pink glasses on bottom right fall off the book. You can get an idea of which questions came first and how the video was edited based on that.
Random but I thought it was interesting.

Wait a second. The reason that you can’t pass your hand through a solid object, is because the electrons in the atoms in your hand repel the electrons in the atoms in the object. Nuclei take up basically no space, they’re not big, except in the really enormous lab-made elements, so what is this thing about smacking into nuclei?

Yeah completely blindsided by this as well, as soon as the question was asked I was expecting the electrostatic force as the response, needless to say I was very surprised at the explanation and I’m currently somewhat skeptical of it. Naturally most things in these explainers have to necessarily be over simplified, but I can’t find a way to make the two compatible.

The reason why we can’t pass through each other is not the “incredibly dense nucleus of atoms” it’s the strength of the repulsion of the electromagnetic field of electrons, primarily.

So many weird explanations:
– Energy is needed to break bonds, not some long winded Ryan and Blake analogy that doesn’t even make sense
– Electrostatic repulsion is responsible for things not passing (see rest of comments)
– Humans have pheromones that play important roles in how people interact alongside verbal and visual communication
August

Humans dont have pheromones? Tell that to any woman who walks by a man that smells good in the store. Sometimes its not even their cologne, its their scent. So as a woman, I respectfully disagree. Ive also been turned off by a guy’s natural scent even though he looked attractive.

The passing your hand through question Was entered incorrectly. It’s because of the electromagnetic force. The nucleus does not take up a lot of space in an atom it’s very dense yes, but it takes up a very small amount in space

4:00 that is super wrong, the only reason you cannot pass objects is the electron cloud around them, they repel each other so you cannot force your hand into things, two nuclei never touch (well they do in headron collider but thats not the case when you touch anything)

the explanation of why a hand can’t pass through a solid object was absolute BS, the real reason is that as you approach your hand towards a solid object 2 things happen:
1. Electrons are getting closer to other electrons and so there will be an electric repulsive force(look up Coulomb’s law)
2. The electron clouds(orbitals) are also getting closer and when there would be a non zero probability of electrons being in the same spot you can not get any closer(look up Pauli exclusion principle)
Now my explanations weren’t 100% thorough and in depth but they are absolutely closer to the truth than “tHe nUcleUs is eXtrAoRdinaRily dEnsE”
