I like that they also asked the hard questions. It’s true that Ramp has taken the lead for now, but I wish all the best for Brex in this new chapter, and they grow even more! Congratulations guys!

I do have a question. For someone with less than $100,000 to invest, How would you recommend we enter the market… am looking to study some traders and copy their strategy rather than investing myself and losing money emotionally. What’s your take on this approach??

Interesting interview. Am the founder of a startup and have heard about Brex. Here’s why I think Pedro, the CEO, was so fervent on not answering the question of why its valuation has fallen more than 50% in about a period of a year. Brex used to offer an interest rate on its credit cards that were determined based on what your company did and who your founders are. In other words, it was individually tailored for each company and founder. In most cases, the interest on the card credit was significantly less than what was offered traditionally.
What changed: interest rates have risen and, most likely, the rate of default at Brex on its credit card is significantly higher than at other credit cards. So, Brex has been forced to raise the interest rate offered to new customers (and most likely to old ones too). Then, the prior valuation was based on how quickly Brex was growing. The present valuation is based on the number of customers that Brex already has. In other words, Capital One hasn’t paid for a high growth company. Instead, its paid for the number of customers that Brex already has. Or, Capital One has decided that it would take more than $5 billion to get about 25k small, startups as customers.
Then, the reason that Pedro didn’t want to answer the question is because Brex has essentially become a zero growth company, which he likely doesn’t want to admit.

What a sleazeball. Simple question: why the drop in the eval? “Oh here’s a metric you’re not asking about, and now back to my marketing script.” 🙄
