I hear wooshing like a heart beat woosh, woosh, woosh in my right ear. Am I dying?

As a child I heard that using a Q tip to try and clean your ears is bad because you’re simply pushing the ear wax further down, which made sense to me. My genius solution was to use a thin nail with a large nail head, so I could scrape out the ear wax like a plow lol

@Ashley Timm Ha, thanks, fortunately it seems like I somehow managed to not do any lasting damage.

Though if I ever have kids myself, I’ll tell them that sticking anything in your ears, especially long and thin metal objects, is a recipe for disaster.

As a hearing care professional, I totally agree with everything that has been said here. All information is briefly explained and is in line with current audiological practice. It was a pure pleasure to watch this video. Well done! Hope to see more! 🙂

Sorry, a mistake on the video. She lifted the semisircular canal bone (balance organ) and called it hearing ossicles.. wrong part

    • Dr. Emily Taylor (aka Dr. Ear Wax)

      August 20, 2022 at 12:43 am

Hi, I’m the audiologist in the video! At the end of the taping for this episode the producers took some B roll footage of me holding different props in different ways and then used a video and placed it over when I was speaking. They didn’t know which part was the ossicles when they edited the video :/ wish I could have viewed the final version before it went public so I could have requested them to fix this!

    • Ashadi Budi

      August 20, 2022 at 12:58 am

@Dr. Emily Taylor (aka Dr. Ear Wax) I see, bad wire.. at the end, you did hold mentioned semicircural canal as the balance organ 🙂

My genius mother once told me confidently that earwax has zero purpose. When I was a child she used to make me lay on my side, and she’d hold my head down while she poured rubbing alcohol in my ears and shoved q-tips in there. This caused problems for me like double hearing, and everything sounding weird and metallic, which as a music lover was rather traumatic. She never connected that it was because of her.

You don’t have to go to a specialist to get ear wax removed. Go to your GP/PCP. Medical assistants can perform a warm water flush. Fast, easy, and likely cheaper.

Hearing the word cochlea in a different accent is amusing. In Australia, the way we pronounce it is heavier on the COC part and added an R on the end of pronouncing it. So it comes out as Coc-Lear.

The level of hearing damage that occurs at concerts is too severe to care about others judging. I wish I wore earplugs more often when I used to go clubbing. Now I have serious hearing problems :'(

A decibel is, in fact, 1/10 of a bel. A bel is a large unit though, so decibel is more convenient to use. same thing happens with Farads (capacitors).

I hope she does a second video! I don’t have hearing loss, but I do definitely have trouble discerning different consonant sounds when people are talking to me, so I hear them say something slightly different than what they’re actually saying cause the consonant sounds get a little muffled so I have to have people repeat things. Is that a hearing problem or an auditory processing problem in my brain?

    • Camo and Curls

      August 20, 2022 at 10:12 pm

Get a hearing test first. Difficulty with consonants is a common problem with high frequency hearing loss.

Please listen to her when she says to not use Q tips to clean your ears. I learned this the hard way because both of my ears were blocked and I could only hear muffles for days. It’s not pleasant at all and definitely not worth the momentary pleasure sticking the Q tip in gives. DON’T USE Q TIPS FOR YOUR EARS.

I wish you had a chance to talk about bone conduction headphones and Cochlear BAHA (bone anchored hearing assistance) and similar products. I had sudden hearing loss in one ear and ended up with a BAHA. Years after my surgery, a variety of great quality bone conduction headphones came out that allowed me to hear in stereo again. I particularly like the Aftershokz products.

It’s a shame she didn’t mention superior canal dehisence syndrome when she was talking about the semi-circular canals and what can cause dizziness. It’s a rare condition that very few doctors have heard of and as such anyone unlucky enough to have it (like myself) has to fight tooth and nail to get a diagnoses. This can often take many years and sadly some doctors will even refuse to test a patient for it because it’s so rare. I wish there was more awareness for this disease. Unfortunately, any TV shows that have covered it have got the condition so incredibly wrong that they’ve ended up doing more harm than good.

I feel like I have tinnitus when I’m in my room which has a lot of appliances like my laptop, chromebook, heater, light and multiboxes etc – whereas when I’m in class or outside I don’t hear it? Or at least I forget about it.

As someone who has had hearing loss since age 13 (now age 45), I really appreciate this video! I usually have to watch everything with captions because my hearing loss mainly affects speech. Like I can hear people speaking but I can’t make out the words most of the time, hence the need for closed captioning. But this was so well enunciated I didn’t even need the captions so I’m very grateful for that! Made me feel normal for once.

As a random small technical gripe when she mentions the ossicles, she picks up the wrong part. What she has in her hand at that point is the vestibular system, the cochlea and semicircular canals. The ossicles are actually attached to the back of the eardrum on that apparatus.

My brother says the fluid in our inner ear thickens as we get older and that’s why, for instance, it’s no longer fun to ride on a roller coaster or we get dizzy doing sports like skateboarding. Is there any treatment/surgery to thin the fluid so that our balance equilibrates faster as our head moves ?

I am so mad that I got a hearing test done cause I’m hypersensitive to sounds which makes my life very difficult, only to find out I hear within normal range and that “I’m just sensitive” and not hearing more than usual as I thought. But if my hearing is normal, why can’t I hear anyone properly over background noise if they’re not shouting?? I always feel like background noise is absurdly loud and I’m currently unable to have a job due to this, my last two jobs made me nauseous with loud-sound induced headaches and I could not understand half of what the customers were saying after two hours of being in there

Objective tinnitus: A rare form of tinnitus that may be caused by involuntary muscle contractions or vascular deformities. When the cause is treated, the tinnitus usually stops entirely. This is the only form of tinnitus that can be heard by an outside observer, and the only type that has the potential for a permanent fix.

A decibell is actually the tenth of a Bel, we just use decibel more, like we use kilogram more than gram.
Fun fact about Bells and decibel: its a logarithemic scale, not a linear one! This is because thats how we precieve loudness.
Bels and decibels aren’t exclusive to sound too. You can use them to tranaform any meqsurment into a logarithmic scale

7:34 “Decibel”: That joke is very close to the truth, actually. The unit was named after Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. However the original unit turned out to be too large, so it became convention to measure sound in terms of “a tenth of a Bel”, or, a deci-bel.

  208. Aidan Haddon-Wright

One thing I think she could’ve explained better about the decibel scale is that it’s a logarithmic scale. This means that every 10dB represents an order of magnitude in ‘loudness’. So 30dB is 100x louder than 10dB, 40dB is 1000x louder than 10dB, 50dB is 10000x louder, etc… Approximately every +3dB is a doubling of the loudness.
That’s why you can listen to 80dB for quite a long time while 100dB is detrimental to your hearing.

a big warning to people going to concerts tinnitus is no fun my grandpa actually tried to kill himself because of it then he even tried it again 7 years later which is like 2 months ago and now hes dead all because it made him insane.
he was a smalltime dj so exposed to a lot of loud music

Incorrect. I have used q-tips my entire life, I am 37 now and I have never had issues with ear infections or wax buildup. As a result I have never had so much wax in my ear that I push it back into my ear canal. I q-tip my ears about once every two weeks. No issues and I have excellent hearing. So that is a myth. Other than that, everything else is very good information.

I didn’t know you could download a decibel meter! But idk how helpful it would be, because the last proper concert I went to was too loud for the sound to even register on my phone. I don’t mean that it sounded crunchy, I mean that all video I tried to take was completely silent. If the phone’s microphone (hardware) was completely railed, the app (software) wouldn’t know there was any sound happening either.
I didn’t realize it was that bad, because my ears were packed with good ol’ orange foam earplugs, but I felt sorry for everyone else. In an indoor space that’s pretty shallow, speakers meant for a stadium halftime show turn into sound weapons.

  222. dan fg

    September 4, 2022 at 1:22 pm

I straighten a paper clip but keeping a tight U shape at one end and use it to remove excess ear wax, taking care never to stick it in too deep. Cue tips are just to remove moisture at the very outer edge of the ear canal, it shouldn’t go in past the cotton.

Wife saw this video,,, booked an appointment to get my hearing tested because when we drive I’m deaf in my right ear,,,,,
I did not have the heart to tell her my hearing was fine and that I was just not listening to her,,
So I went for the test and we’ll now I have no excuse but to listen and answer the multitude of odd and boarder line insane questions that she asks 😰

Couldn’t listen to this for more than 5 minutes! The audio of Emily has been so compressed/levelled—and any pauses, breathing moments, and pauses cut—that it’s just constant information at full noise for 18 minutes.
