Laptop with 150W 3080 is faster than m1 Max for half the cost

      November 19, 2021 at 7:30 pm

@Mr G maybe that guy wanted a larger screen but an m1 air is sufficient for frontend…besides how can you not appreciate macos if you’re into software? and these arm macs are way faster than other laptops in gradle builds even while unplugged…imo ultrabooks are best for a software dev and macbooks are the best ultrabooks…gaming laptops are just mini powerhungry desktops and not ideal for a dev not working from home….personally windows desktop and macbook is the best combo..

    • Dominick Thompson

      November 19, 2021 at 7:34 pm

@Mr G interesting…I’ll have to do some more research into it. Still, for my particular workflow, these laptops are incredible. Can’t wait for mine to show up (the delays are killing me)

      November 19, 2021 at 7:35 pm

@Mr G isnt the fastest supercomputer arm based?

    • Mr G

      November 19, 2021 at 7:38 pm

@Yobro Yobro gradle build also has to do with rwo. Laptops with pcie4 ssd and Ryzen H or Intel 12K can be as fast or sometimes better. Why would I appreciate Macos over other OS for development other than Swift development? Macos has the worst file browser of all operating systems combined. The only reason why I need to use old Mac for development is for the homebrew and Swift development.

    • Mr G

      November 19, 2021 at 7:42 pm

@Yobro Yobro yes the fastest supercomputer is ARM based, but supercomputers have access to huge memory and storage. It also heavily rely on precompiled instructions. You are comparing ARM supercomputer setting with ARM laptop with 1TB-3TB storage and 32GB memory. If you compare supercomputer with 32GB memory and 1TB storage, CISC will be better as you will hit bottleneck with RISC

Well said man! But one thing to mention is that people want the bigger 16” form factor, better speakers and ProRes encoders, so even for the average video editor will be pleased with the M1 Pro specially if they’re working with h.265 and ProRes.

Those bar charts are really misleading. They should not start at 5,000 points…

  7. Nemo Ciau

    November 19, 2021 at 6:28 pm

Great comparison! The Max isn’t worth the upgrade for me because although I do sometimes dabble in those pro apps, I don’t do it as a career to see any significant ROI. 16″ base would still be a vanity purchase based on my workflow but it’s a laptop I won’t easily grow out of and that makes me feel good.

What’s the point of running un-optimised Apps ? Wait for the optimised version or run optimised alternate Apps to publish actual results.

    • Jessi

      November 19, 2021 at 7:59 pm

Running apps via Rosetta still outperforms Intel Chips with native software. So quite nice actually

    • Amit Budhraja

      November 20, 2021 at 4:15 am

@Jessi not in the case of Apps like Adobe Premiere

    • Blank Canvas Merch

      November 20, 2021 at 1:49 pm

@Jessi that’s incorrect. Been using a MacBook m1 pro for 2 weeks and finding a few software I regularly use (Intel based) that run like absolute trash…basically unusable on Rosetta 2. And there lies the problem…I’m fairly certain there’s no “performance baseline” dictating how well software should perform while being used through Rosetta 2….

    • Jessi

      November 20, 2021 at 3:05 pm

@Blank Canvas Merchwell…. name the software you are using … after we talk

    • Bren

      November 20, 2021 at 7:58 pm

@Amit Budhraja Just a reminder that Adobe is a marketing company, not a software company. Apps crashing frequently and poor performance is “normal” and strangely people seem to be okay with that.

    • Amit Budhraja

      November 20, 2021 at 8:50 pm

@Bren totally agree with you. If Apple is the preferred platform then the user should avoid using Adobe Premiere…and there are great alternatives like DaVinci Resolve and FCP.

A vanity purchase? So upgrading to a bigger screen, better performance, actually functional ports, and a design without an obsolete touchbar is vanity? Sure. So is buying a new iPhone when the one you have still works, I guess.

So I decided to go with the greatest no brainer configuration 16.5″ M1 Pro base model for an extra 200$ over the 14″ M1 pro base model. Mainly because you get a bigger XDR display and it has more battery life then the MacBook air! Plus I get two extra CPU cores & two extra GPU cores which is a bonus for me. In addition I also upgraded the SSD to 1TB for future proofing.  If you have any spare time and would like to check out my M1 pro unboxing with a beginners perspective since I only shot it with my iPhone 📹😁Thank you in advance and I hope you have a great day!

It has been found that the gpu benchmarks using geekbench on the M1 max and the M1 pro aren’t indicative of real performance. In fact the metal scores should be a lot high.

  19. Vorza Hanzo

    November 20, 2021 at 12:34 pm

Nice complete reviews with wise recommendation! 👍🥷 added notes: the more GPU people choose, especially for the M1 max the worst the battery life would be, & according to some reviewers the 16 inch actually had similar quality speakers with the 14 inch.. ✌️

Honestly I’ve been a windows user all my life , but these new MacBooks make me want to move over. I’m a music producer so I won’t take nearly all the chips power but it’s peace of mind that it will last for a very long time.

      November 23, 2021 at 10:37 am

I was the exact same, also a music producer but I think Macs just do music/video production so much better for me personally, little to no fuss and great workflow performance.

not a good review. should have tested the two different chips on the SAME size MBP. the same exact chip will perform differently on a 14” vs 16” due to thermal thresholds. (i.e. exact same chip when pushed will get better benchmarks on a 16” than 14”)

Good review, and matches what’s being said in other places. But it’s not just about performance; what about those displays, and all those ports? There’s value in having them, I think.
