Let’s not mistake AI for a panacea! Remember how we saw Facebook as a force for good after the Arab Spring, only to watch it evolve into something far more problematic?

    • @lichtstreuner

      March 15, 2025 at 7:49 pm

Apple made a mistake, and that’s okay. But is it still okay when they charge these prices in this economy? I tried to trade in my iPhone 16 for the 16e anyway, hoping for a lighter device with better battery life and no accidental Camera Control presses (yes, I’ve already disabled it), but the option isn’t available. The only reason I’m still with Apple is because they haven’t rolled back their DEI initiatives. If they ever do, I will never own another Apple device again.

We need to put things into perspective. Artificial intelligence is a marketing invention. It doesn’t exist. We should not desire what companies want to force us to swallow. At best, they’re virtual assistants. And the message in this video is that we don’t want a virtual assistant that claims to do things it can’t. We don’t want a virtual assistant to make mistakes that a human would know how to avoid, otherwise what’s the point of using a virtual assistant? Let Apple take its time. In any case, the vast majority of us don’t need more. We are not protagonists in the movie HER.

This is what happens when you are forced to release OS updates every year with a new hardware. Nobody asked for updates this often or even a new hardware …we just want something that is actually useful and not gimmicky in the name of AI.

😳😳 * “Apparently, Apple’s strategy for Siri’s LLM is to just … wait and hope it magically becomes competent. While Google’s Gemini is actively learning and improving. The Apple apologists’ argument? ‘It’s not about being first, it’s about being best.’ Except, they’re not even close to being best. This YouTuber’s attempt to convince us that Apple’s AI is ‘perfectly balanced’ is like saying a broken clock is right twice a day. ” 🙋🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

In fairness, our high expectations are entirely created by Apple’s promises of software it has yet to deliver.

K.. well the problem is Siri has been around since 2011. There is no excuse for Apple to take till 2025-2026 to get Siri to actually do more things. They could have done more things with Siri over the years but instead they left it a dud while there products get more expensive and their software gets worse. Come on now.. have to disagree in apples case

  8. @MichaelMarquez-m3b

    March 14, 2025 at 7:31 pm

They advertised a feature to boost sales and their stock price that they haven’t been able to deliver. It was all done in a prerecorded presentation so the public wasn’t able to evaluate it working live and in real time.

I honestly don’t think it could be any stronger of an Apple apologist review if it tried. Obviously she has never used any Non Apple AI in any meaningful way recently, sure it’s not perfect but it’s years not just months ahead of Apple “Intelligence”. Apple marketed its iPhone 16 line up as “built for Apple Intelligence” so yes they failed miserably to live up to this. This review is in the same boat as Cooks infamous “buy your mom an iPhone” comment, its completely apologist at best, condescending and ignorant at worst or perhaps all three.

Honestly, I think the issue is that too many companies (including Apple) have replaced new features or updated hardware with “it has AI!”. Basic personal assistants that can help with basic stuff is great, especially if it can keep you from touching your phone while driving or for those who have physical disability (play the new Lady Gaga album, what’s the weather, call Mom, send a text to John that I’m on my way, etc), but trying to get it to do everything you might ask no matter how silly or unrealistic (remove John from the wedding photo, make my dog look like it is an alien, figure out what I need for groceries and buy it all to be delivered without asking anything, etc). We are many years from the Jetsons, and people need to realize that.
Yes, Siri needs more Quality of Life improvements to fix basic requests that other Assistants have gotten better at. I can’t tell you how many times I ask a question by voice (Because of Airpods) and Siri doesn’t answer, but gives a web search and doesn’t even read it, so I’ll have to grab my phone and have to do it myself. If it’s complex, I get it, but sometimes I’ve asked for conversions (money, weight, volume) or simple facts (when is the next full moon, when will it rain next, etc) and again, it just gives up. We don’t need complex AI in everything, just be able to get facts easily.
I think many tech companies can’t really innovate every year with major new features in hardware or software, so AI has been the replacement, which it shouldn’t be.
Apple has had USBC in their non-pro models for two generations (15 & 16) yet still is not USB 3 speeds, while the Pro models have the faster speeds. Samsung did a similar play for their S25 models that have minimal changes for the new year.
Maybe many companies are having issues innovating or coming up with new ways to people to buy new devices, but think of other things, not focus on AI.

30% of video telling Apple AI functionality, not even bad words about Apple
70% of video bashing Google Gemini and other AI which were quite old and not happening anymore ..
Anyway this is CNET!! it always biased towards apple, always favour apple

Who are we kidding? The stock market cheered for NVIDIA because the investor class loves the idea of automating jobs away. But when they saw the massive cost of infrastructure, they backed off. Now tech companies are investing in nuclear power plants to fuel data centers. Let’s not fool ourselves—this tech isn’t for us; it’s designed to replace human capital. Did you see who showed up at Diaper Don’s inauguration? Have you noticed the corporate raid Musk and Doge are orchestrating?

  25. @NevermoreCustoms

The problem is announcing products before they are even finished. Let us not forget Apple’s wireless charger, air power. They announced it in two different keynotes and then eventually scrapped it. Wouldn’t have happened if they didn’t tell people about it. They might have thought it was a project the never went further than copyright.

  26. @manyce400

    March 15, 2025 at 2:29 pm

Couldn’t agree anymore with your take Bridget. Context aware Siri is such a highly anticipated thing for Apple consumers that it needs to be done right. It doesn’t need to be perfect out the gate but needs to have some great use cases that execute flawlessly. Product delays is nothing new. If they take their time and truly nail it everyone will forget the delays. A botched rollout is a lot worse.

I agree totally. AI is over hyped. I knock Apple for the premature launch. But not going to complain about delaying the updated Siri until it’s right.
I’m more excited about the coming UI remakes and an affordable Apple Vision Air.

  44. @supermandar

    March 15, 2025 at 6:35 pm

It all comes down to quarterly profit pressure — resulting in executives showing off half-baked or sometimes pointless tech every so often. I agree with you that the “gadget era” has suddenly come to a standstill. But I believe that this is transitionary. I would expect AI based gadgets to explode over the next decade. Smart Vision glasses, home robots to name a few. But before that, the AI software story needs to unfold, and it’s not entirely clear how that would play out. Apple has been a company that waits for a new complex tech to “settle” before introducing it in a meaningful way in their products. And I’d be curious to see how Apple pulls of an AI integrated ecosystem — which they are far from today.

  45. @SunnyNatividad

    March 15, 2025 at 6:42 pm

They’re making Pixar lamps now? 😮

  46. @rmedzoyan

    March 15, 2025 at 7:28 pm

I agree. AI has been over-hyped. So far all AI has been half-baked nonsense. I could care less about image generation. I’m already fed up from seeing AI generated counterfeit photos infesting everything. So far it seems like the only people that can make work out of AI are scammers.

  47. @jpbousquet6446

    March 15, 2025 at 8:44 pm

Well said: whats left but AI to drive the Tech (gadget) industry and need for constant growth? For now AI seems to have best application in science research and solving big, complex data problems. But for the rest of us, it is still a baby tech: useful for some daily stuff, but I would not trust it to book me a Uber indeed 😉

  48. @earnhar768

    March 15, 2025 at 8:51 pm

I like pressing the new button so I’m content for now.

  49. @RaffGonz

    March 15, 2025 at 9:30 pm

I like your take, but I think this misses just how far behind Apple is. Yes, other ai models have issues and errors, but they are very usable and very helpful. Siri is terrible at even basic things like adding something to your shopping list, think ‘who is speaking?’, or adding something that you didnt actually ask for. Apple Intelligence doesn’t seem to be able to do anything that complex without going via ChatGPT, which takes 10 times as long as just opening the ChatGPT app and having a very normal conversation with the voice assistant. This is so much more than not being ready, its not even close to ready or usable.
