Benefit? You messed up your city and you come to my city? Please leave whatever you left behind in Cali and NY and do not make my city as bad as yours.

Please enlighten us as to what “messed up” those cities. I’ve lived in multiple of the cities people are moving to, the cities you’re saying to not “mess up”. There are all sorts of problems that already exist in places like Phoenix and Miami.

Austin Texas will be the new silicone valley.
California as a whole is unsustainable as it is currently governed.

    • Tucker Monticelli

      November 30, 2021 at 7:06 pm

Until the people of Austin start asking for the same equality, inclusion, amenities and education and standards that Californians did, it will be the same. The reason is because the companies in silicon valley are made to siphon every last bit of money they can to the top. They don’t let any of that money go back into the community or to the people living in silicon valley which causes high housing prices and high cost of living. The same thing will happen to Austin it has nothing to do with politics it has everything to do with capitalism.

The mishandling of California is a large contributing factor and it’s been that way for years

    • Harrison Gibson

      November 30, 2021 at 5:28 pm

@J.B. The cost of living problem is largely a zoning issue that is driving up property vales and rent prices.

    • Michael b

      November 30, 2021 at 8:47 pm

@J.B. ok but look at the low Covid rates in the states that have relaxed restrictions like Florida..

    • B K

      November 30, 2021 at 8:52 pm

@J.B. Funniest thing I have read in awhile. CA has been a hellhole way before Covid came along. People aren’t leaving because of the vax. You think way too highly of yourself on these issues.

    • emdec55

      November 30, 2021 at 10:13 pm

@J.B. Californians have sacrificed liberties and wrecked their economy over a virus that wasn’t even the leading cause of death in the country. Their Covid handling has been anything but right. And, what’s more, they haven’t done any better, by any meaningful metric, than states that did not follow their lead. California Covid policies have been a failure, like so many other things it does.

    • James Foster

      December 1, 2021 at 1:24 am

@Michael b We have 40 million people and densely populated areas yet we are handling Covid better than any other state. The reason it took longer to open up was because of the anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers. It’s not hard to make an appointment and get a shot.

Cost of living is high in Miami and there’s not a lot of room in the city. Traffic is terrible, there is no train from the suburbs to the city. Miami is like a poorly designed New York. Don’t move here.

Wait… workers don’t like higher taxes and higher living expenses?? 😱 who would’ve known? 🤔

  14. Tucker Monticelli

    November 30, 2021 at 7:00 pm

What the video fails to mention is that cities offering “tax incentives” to big tech to move there don’t actually gain anything but more people and higher housing prices. Here in Reno having Tesla, Amazon and apple here has done nothing for the city. It’s a lie, and scam. These companies give nothing to the cities they go to. They are just going to Texas for less taxes… Just wait Texas, you’ll start to see why California has so many regulations.

  36. Falsificationism

    December 2, 2021 at 12:56 pm

Um…maybe check your statistics? Geographic mobility in the US is at all time historic lows. The stats shared in the video focus on a small, very specific subset (mostly tech workers) making a shift. Is it significant? Yes. But is it representative? Absolutely not.

And this is a problem. People are staying where they are more than ever. That impacts everything from the housing market to small business formation.

  42. Quagthistle

    December 3, 2021 at 5:47 am

Small towns out in the boonies of western Kansas have also seen an influx of people moving in, but mostly because house prices out here are insanely low. (You can easily buy a 3-bedroom house with a large yard for $10-15k, and small towns are, by definition, walking-friendly… and often chicken-friendly, too.) All that being said, you sacrifice something, too. Driving to the store is 65 miles one-way (takes about an hour each way), and that can be very inconvenient. (That said, medical care is both cheaper and more available in the rural areas, largely due to the fact that city doctors often refuse all but the healthiest patients with the best insurance, which rural doctors tend to take anyone and sometimes even actually try to help you, hard as that might be to believe.)

However, I think this migration has more to do with the inability of large cities to control the rampant, immoral profiteering on housing that’s driving up rent and property values (creating a massive housing bubble that will likely burst with devastating economic consequences at some point, see: 2008 financial crisis). It doesn’t do any good to make $20 an hour (instead of $10 an hour) if your rent eats up $15/hour or more of that income ($2,400/month rent = $15 an hour * 8 hours per day * 5 days per week * 4 weeks per month). Unless we put controls in place on large expenses like housing and medical care, it will eventually economically destroy us, no matter what minimum wage we set. That said, putting limitations on profits would drastically affect businesses that profit off of taking advantage of working class people with little bargaining power.

In short, the problem is far more complicated that some tech workers using the pandemic’s home-friendly work policies to move to better or cheaper cities. It’s a systemic blight of rot at the very root of the great tree of our nation and economy, one that is choking the very core of our society.
