Using paychecks, perks and carefully worded mission statements plastered on posters, companies are on a never-ending quest to find what drives morale at work. An underappreciated solution lies in the answer to one simple question, says management researcher David Burkus. With notable examples backed by decades of success, he presents a clear path to inspiring your team — and finding your purpose at work.

This whining and blaming others for a lack of motivation seems to be an American problem. I’ve been working for 40 years and if I wasn’t happy I changed jobs. I determine my motivation and my value for the company.
And YES, I have had a more than fulfilling and successful working life so far. I never thought I would be successful with my bad cards.

America works in a blame culture. The businesses blame the employees, the employees blame the businesses. Most people who are half-way intelligent learn exactly what you’re talking about: job hopping is to get around cultural problems. If you speak about the cultural problems, you’ll be fired. If you quit you won’t have any money.

Your selfish long-term Satisfaction is enhanced BEST by helping others enhance their Satisfaction.
Human Satisfaction = Comfortable + Interesting existence = Health + Wealth + Wisdom.
Private free market enterprise and charity via individual self-determination best enhances the health, wealth and wisdom of community as a whole.
Mutual trust (in every way and every relationship) is essential for maximum community Satisfaction.
These are principles on which people of all beliefs can agree.

Call centers targeting regular people just should not exist because no one wants to be solicited to and no one should have to be forced to overcome that social faux pas as part of their job. Of course it’s miserable.

To all the bosses watching, getting the “who?” right is NOT an alternative for a reasonable pay, bonuses and work life balance.

I work at a University. I hear this stuff all the time. We are constantly inundated with stories from the students we “help” get an education. However, after awhile all these stories are just background noise. What I find fascinating in this talk is the lack of connection between work and pay. All I heard was the company wants employees to work harder, but does not want to invest financially in this increase in production. Basically, work harder and we will pay you in stories.

So if you bring in the small group of already rich old white men who are getting a bit richer will you feel motivated?
For 98% only answer is profit sharing. The rest are the 2% who don’t need the extra money. Even the most mazing job still has to pay your bills and, ideally, will let you save for retirement or you can’t afford it.
